Support for LSUS critical for future

Dear Friend,

I want to thank you for the warm welcome to the Foundation. As I write this I am completing six months in the position of your executive director and it has been an incredible experience. In my short time here I have come to under-

stand and greatly appreciate the role LSUS plays in the community. To the business community this campus is critical to provide the much-need-ed workforce. I had the opportunity to hear the Commissioner of Higher Education, Dr. Jim Purcell, speak in January at an SBBA event. He brilliantly connected the dots; educated work-forces attract new business and grow the current. Equally important is the role LSUS plays in the

overall quality of life. As one of the most afford-able four-year institutions in the country, our citizens have the opportunity to earn an educa-tion that provides more than just a livable wage for them and their family, but a wage that allows for bright, promising futures! I am a former educator myself and I have long

been an advocate that education can change lives and communities. It is the singular solution to the global array of problems facing our country, our region, our community. And yet, we are in an unprecedented time of cutbacks to funding for higher education in Louisiana. The LSUS Foundation is needed now more

than ever, and I, as well as our board of di-rectors, extend our deepest gratitude for your support. Your gift is one of vision for our com-munity and promise for our students.

Best Regards,

The LSU Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the appoint-ment of F. King Alexan-der as President of the LSU System and Chan-cellor of LSU A&M, with the understanding that these two positions will be combined under the title of president of LSU upon compliance with accreditation standards. Alexander served as the president of California State University Long Beach (CSU) since 2006.“My tenure as president of CSU Long Beach

has prepared me to assume the role as the head of the Louisiana State University system,” Alexander said. “The challenges facing LSU are similar to those in California and elsewhere. Universities throughout the nation are struggling to serve more students while managing declining state revenues. “At the same time, leaders in the field of higher

education know the burden is on us to demon-strate that the public’s money is well spent.”Under his leadership, CSU Long Beach im-

proved graduation rates to their highest levels in school history; enhanced the number of gradu-ates to their highest levels, totaling approximate-ly 9,000 degrees per year; and obtained capital funding and constructed a new $110 million Hall of Science, a $70 million Student Recreation and Wellness Center and a new School of Nursing facility during an economic recession.Alexander significantly increased CSU Long

Beach’s research and external funding capacity and support. He oversaw a reorganization of CSU Long Beach’s institutional advancement and public relations office, and the university’s private philanthropic giving has set institutional records and currently is in the midst of a first “capital campaign,” where more than $200 million has already been raised, resulting in a

doubling of the university’s endowment.During this same time, he maintained and

modified budgeting processes to accommodate an $85 million reduction in state appropriation during the economic recession. Alexander was twice voted “President of the Year” by the Cali-fornia State University Student Association, rep-resenting 23 student governments and 435,000 students throughout California. In addition to serving as president at CSU Long

Beach and Murray State, Alexander has held positions at the University of Illinois, Cham-paign-Urbana; University of Wisconsin, Madi-son; and University of North Carolina at Greens-boro.“King Alexander has the skills and experi-

ence to lead LSU at this time in our history,” said Hank Danos, chairman of the LSU Board of Supervisors. “He is committed to upholding our great traditions and equally committed to continuing our transition to excellence for the present and the future.”King Alexander will assume responsibilities of

the LSU president on July 1.

What year are you and what is your major?I graduated in May with a degree in accounting

Why did you choose LSUS?I was a 34-year-old freshman with a job with a supplier for GM. I realized that manufacturing as everyone knew it was drying up, and I didn’t have anything to fall back on. I decided I needed an education. When I was officially laid off, I had three years towards my degree under my belt.

What is your favorite aspect of LSUS?The professors here are old school, very hands on. You can tell they love teaching.

SHREVEPORT — Louisiana State University in Shreveport is proud to announce the Depart-ment of Education will be offering a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Leadership Studies. This Ed.D. program will be the first of its kind to be offered on the Shreveport campus, allowing LSU Shreveport to offer the highest level of instruction in the field of education. “This is very exciting news for the Shreveport

community, and is the biggest academic news at LSUS since our first graduate program was offered in 1978,” said John S. Vassar, interim provost and vice-chan-cellor for academic affairs. The news came May 22, following a Louisiana Board of Regents meeting, where they approved the pro-gram.A wide range of the

community attended the Board of Regents meeting on behalf of the proposed program. “The Board of Regent’s decision today rep-

resents an important milestone in the develop-ment of higher education in northwest Louisi-ana” said William Jenkins, interim president of the LSU System. “We are proud to work close-ly with the Shreveport-Bossier City communi-ties to offer this doctoral degree in the import-ant area of leadership studies.”The approval of the program is the result of

dedicated work by a wide range of community groups and leaders in the Shreveport-Bossier area. The LSUS Foundation provided the finan-

cial commitment of $70,000 over five years, an assurance required for the degree’s approval.“It is an honor for the foundation to be able to

support the LSUS efforts in this manner. After all, this is the very reason a university foun-dation exists, to support the growth and vision of the school. I can’t think of a better expendi-ture,” commented T. Brian Bond, LSUS Foun-dation board president. The 63-credit-hour program focuses on

leadership skills applicable to business, gov-ernment, non-profit or educational setting. It includes instruction in organizational planning,

dynamics of leader-ship, finance, team building, conflict resolution and me-diation, communica-tion and other man-agement skills. The Ed.D. in leadership studies will concen-trate on developing leaders who can move forward with a vision for transform-ing organizations as

well as those who can address change as a dy-namic rather than a static condition. Because of this broad focus on core leadership skills, the degree will be a valuable asset for a leader in any educational, non-profit or business setting. In order to offer a doctoral degree, LSU

Shreveport will file the appropriate paperwork with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) for a SACSCOC Level V institution. Students interested in the degree can enroll in classes beginning in the spring 2014 semester, pending SACSCOC Accreditation level change approv-al.

On April 24, 2013, Edie Broyles Williams and Marcia Copeland Calhoun were given the LSUS Foundation’s top honor: Pilots of the Year. And, almost 400 guests came out to Horseshoe Casino’s Riverdome to celebrate with them for an evening comparable to any “Night on Broadway.” The Pilot of the Year Award

is given annually to person(s) who have given generously of their time, efforts and resources for the betterment of the LSU Shreveport campus. “Being named as a ‘Pilot of

the Year’ by the LSUS Foun-dation along with my good friend, Edie Williams, was one of the greatest honors I will ever receive. I will forever be humbled by the recognition and pledge my continued support for our great university,” stated Calhoun after the night’s festiv-ities.Kermit Poling, executive di-

rector of the Red River Radio, organized the entertainment with guest singers from the Shreveport Opera. A rented backdrop with a full street view of Broadway was used to set the stage. A seven-foot-tall ice sculpture welcomed guests entering the RiverDome and centerpieces made of gladiolus and top hats framed each table. Each guest left with chocolates made for the night by New York Chocolatier Jacque Torres. “This was an incredible night!

The music was fabulous; the

decorations were incredible. This RiverBend Revue set a new precedent, and it will be a tough one to top,” said T. Brian Bond, LSUS Foundation board president. “It was a wonderful night. My

family and friends can’t stop talking about it, and I am so

grateful for the award. I won’t ever forget the night I was ‘On Broadway,’ ” said honoree Edie Williams.Top underwriting honors go to

Harrah’s-Horseshoe Casino and Hotel, Willis-Knighton Health System and Eagle Distributing of Shreveport.
