I mean he doesn’t use 10 words, if he can say it in 5. He wrote the shortest of the Gospels in a quick, terse, almost military style. He’s very direct, so the words he does use are calculated to produce the greatest effect. Next, leprosy in the ancient world was the most dreaded of diseases. It was considered to be terminal, con- tagious, disfiguring, and caused its vicm to become a social outcast. It was called the “living death.” On top of this, most people believed lepers must have been guilty of great secret sins for God to inflict such punish- ment on them. They became “untouchable.” So here’s our story. Don’t blink you’ll miss it. A leper asks Jesus to heal him, and Jesus does. Not very remarkable right? I mean Jesus worked tons of miracles. What’s so special about this one? Watch this …Jesus, moved with compassion …stretched out His hand and touched him. Jesus healed people with words; from across the room (“Stretch out your hand”), from outside the tomb (“Lazarus come forth”), from miles away (“Go your way, your son lives”). He didn’t have to touch this lep- rous man. But He did. That’s the Savior we serve, He who reaches out to touch the leper when He could have just spoken his heal- ing, a Savior powerful enough to heal with a word and compassionate enough to heal with a touch. You can’t heal anybody. But you can reach out and touch somebody, especially those who society considers “untouchable.” And I think that’s exactly what our Savior requires of us. □

“I AM COME THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE LIFE AND HAVE IT ABUNDANTLY” And Jesus reached out . . ., Stan Butt

O ne of my favorite miracles that Jesus performed is this one in the first chapter of Mark. Here’s why.

“Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him, and saying to Him, ‘If You are willing, You can make me clean.’ Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, ‘I am willing, be cleansed.”

To start, Mark is a word miser.

It was considered to be terminal, con-tagious, disfiguring, and caused its victim to become a social outcast. It was called the “living death.” On top of this, most people believed lepers must have been guilty of great secret sins for God to inflict such punish-ment on them. They became “untouchable.”

So here’s our story. Don’t blink you’ll miss it. A leper asks Jesus to heal him, and Jesus does.

Not very remarkable right? I mean Jesus worked tons of miracles. What’s so special about this one?

Watch this

…Jesus, moved with compassion

…stretched out His hand and touched him.

Jesus healed people with words; from across the room (“Stretch out your hand”), from outside the tomb (“Lazarus come forth”), from miles away (“Go your way, your son lives”). He didn’t have to touch this lep-rous man. But He did.

That’s the Savior we serve, He who reaches out to touch the leper when He could have just spoken his heal-ing, a Savior powerful enough to heal with a word and compassionate enough to heal with a touch.

You can’t heal anybody. But you can reach out and touch somebody, especially those who society considers “untouchable.” And I think that’s exactly what our Savior requires of us. □
