LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR

THE WEEK

"Show me what is physically different between a host that

is consecrated and one that is not." These are words that

can be heard on the lips of anyone struggling with faith.

Perhaps, they are heard on yours. Physical tests will re-

veal no difference. The difference is seen through faith. In

one sense, it is simple. Either we believe that the risen

Christ is present -- soul and divinity -- or we do not. The

fruits of faith are the proof. In the Eucharist, God enters into the very depths of who we are. However,

it is our choice whether we ignore what He does or act fully upon it. The Eucharist can change us.

When people see that we are different, they in turn will themselves believe.

History Corner The history of San Carlos began on June 3, 1770. We’ll be sharing a little of our history with you in this corner of the Bulletin on a recurring basis. If you would like

to learn more about our history, please visit our Heritage Center or take a tour with one of our Docents.

Father Mestres Era

During his long tenure at San Carlos, Father Mestres was responsible for many changes in the

church, to include the addition of pews and construction of a pyramidal roof on the bell tower.

Candlelight or whale oil fixtures provided lighting in the church until 1905 when Father Mestres

had electricity installed. He also oversaw the construction of several new buildings, among

which were a school and a rectory. His influence extended beyond San Carlos and into the town

of Monterey and the Carmel Mission. He continued the work begun by his predecessor, Father

Casanova, to restore the Carmel Mission and commissioned Jo Mora to create the life-size memo-

rial cenotaph dedicated to Father Serra. The building in which Mora worked is now known as the

Mora Chapel Gallery.

Care for Creation What can I do to reduce

water waste?

-Capture rain runoff with a rain barrel and use it to water plants -Do not flush medications down the toilet (They linger in the water supply) -Use non-toxic cleaning products -Ask restaurants to serve water only up on request

Please Pray for the safe

return of the following brave men

& women serving in the United

States & Allied Armed Forces:

Have you ever looked closely at some of the things you do everyday? Specifically, are there things that you do daily that are good for you, that make you not just exist but flourish? For instance, be-cause I preside at or attend Mass, I sing everyday. I cannot imagine a day without singing. Here's another thing I do daily: I engage with (talk to, feed, pet) other living creatures, e.g. Blue Jays, Bull Dogs, squirrels. Can't imagine a day without them.

I also cannot imagine a day without reading. For breakfast I get the Herald or, failing that, get online to read the daily news. I check favorite blogs everyday, like American Digest, Abbey Roads, the Daily Mail from the U.K. (like the colored photos and the passage from the sublime to the profane).

Inspired by Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts, everyday I try to note beautiful things, sounds, smells, etc., and name them with a few words before thanking God for His creations. Why? This ex-ercise gets me out of my self-involved mind, sharpens my senses and leads me to appreciate God's incredible imagination and, for lack of a better word, flare. For instance, has anyone noticed a baby palm tree on the 'island' in the middle of the highway near the turn off to CHOMP?

And every day I either celebrate or attend Mass, sometimes twice if there's a funeral. If I'm on vaca-tion, I check out the nearest church. I don't care what language the Mass is in, whether the congrega-tion is huge or only a few people, what time of day. I'm very impressed lately with the number of people at the daily Masses here. Though the crowd is all ages and backgrounds, I suspect many are retired. (What a great gift to God, yourself and others now that your time is your own! Next thing know you may be bringing Jesus to the home bound or those in assisted living...)

I'm sure there are other things we do everyday that enhance our experience of life. One more: very rarely does a day pass that I do not both laugh and cry. And that's a good thing.

-Fr. Patrick Dooling
