Ancillary TasksQuestion 1

The poster would challenge aspects of what you would usually expect of a film promotional poster. It does follow the very usual conventions of having a large, clear title, which is placed at the top, and also it shows the institution and the age it is suitable for.

From research into other posters, I found that they tended to have a section at the bottom that stated who was involved in the film, I have follow this convention.

The ‘5 stars’ are there in order to convince viewers it is worth watching, and by using a magazine with a good reputation such as Empire, the audience will know it is trustworthy.

Film posters usually have something that leaves the viewer/audience wondering, and that is the aim of this caption. It is a rhetorical question to the audience.

The black sections help to split the cover up, and this is conventionally done by magazine editors in order to help it stand out.

The title is clear, and have used a colour that stands out against the background that it is on. I have also used the ‘bevel’ effect, which gives the effect of it being lifted off the page. This helps to make it clear, and I found in my research that this is often used tool in the media industry.

Magazines will often use a well known name to help sell it, and by putting it in a black box, which matches the other black boxes and text on the page, it helps it to stand out.

Emotion is important, and magazines use it as a way of conveying what the magazines content is about.

The wavy hair represents the weather, and how windy it is.

I found in my research that magazines regularly use the effect of having the ‘20 Thrillers’ section etc. Then using different colours separates it and makes it appear as if it is covering more space.

This is a price that reflects competitively, and looking at other magazines in the same region, I have found that they are normally slightly more expensive, so this could make min more appealing.
