    AOH Presidents MessageBrothers,

As I write this I am in Lake Placid at a conference. Although the mountains are still snow capped you can smell spring in the air. Beautiful spring, a time to witness rejuvenation all around us. A perfect time of year to re-dedicate ourselves to Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity. A time to reflect on the things we have accomplished and prepare for the road ahead of us.

Have you re-dedicated yourself to the Ancient Order of Hibernians and have you joined with us for another year of serving others? Have you paid your dues for 2019? We need you! We pray you are still with us.

As you know, our meetings are the first and third Fridays of the month. Please come and join us. Your attendance at meetings is crucial for the organization to succeed. While attending the meeting you will hear more about our upcoming events:

April 7  Showing of the movie "Heart of Nuba". Movie starts at 3:00 PM. Light snacks will be offered. At the hallApril 28 Annual Communion Breakfast at the hallJune 7 Annual Golf Tournament Orchard Creek Golf Club

I want to give another special Thank YOU to Worthy Vice President John Humphrey for providing our breakfast on the last Sundays of January, February, March and April. The funds raised are going toward FFAI. The breakfasts are superb! You have one more chance to experience this terrific buffet at our Communion Breakfast April 28th.

It is an honor beyond description to be the president of this division. Your help and participation are most appreciated!

    In our motto,

    Tom

    A Little Irish History.

The fo!owing was taken "om the Division Organizational Package found on the NYS AOH web site.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians was founded in America on May 4,1836. at St. James Church in New York City. Its roots, however, are found in Ireland, dating back some 300 years. Since then, it has continued to grow and prosper and has become the largest and most influential Irish Catholic men's organization in the world.

Some history on British Penal LawsProfessor Lecky, a Protestant of` British blood and ardent British Sympathizer, says (in his history of Ireland in the 18th Century) that the objective of the Penal Laws were threefold:1. To deprive the Catholics of all civil life. 2. To reduce them to a condition of most extreme and brutal ignorance. 3. To disassociate them from the soil. He might with absolute justice have substituted 'Irish' for Catholic and added: 4. To expire the race. • The Irish Catholic was forbidden to practice their religion. • Forbidden from receiving an education.• Forbidden from entering a profession.• Forbidden from holding public office.• Forbjdden from engaging in trade or commerce.• Forbidden from living in, or within five (5) miles of a corporate town.• Forbidden from owning a horse of greater value than five pounds. • Forbidden from purchasing land.• Forbidden from leasing land.• Forbidden from accepting a mortgage on land in security of a loan. • Forbidden from voting.• Forbidden from keeping any arms for their protection.• Forbidden from holding a life annuity.• Forbidden from buying land from a Protestant.• Forbidden from accepting a gift of land from a Protestant• Forbidden from renting land worth more than thirty (30) shillings a year.• Forbidden from reaping from their land a profit exceeding a third of the rent. • Could not be a guardian to any children.• Could not, when dying, leave their infant children under Catholic guardianship.• Could not attend Catholic worship.• Was compelled, by Law, to attend protestant worship. • Could not educate their. children themselves.• Could not send their children to a Catholic teacher.• Could not employ a Catholic teacher to come to their children. • Could not send their children abroad lo receive an education.Taken from MacManus, Seamus.
