THE PRINCIPLES OF THE SCOTTISH RITE

Declaration of Principles by the Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand InspectorsGeneral of the Thirty-Third and Last Degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite ofFreemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America.

THIS SUPREME COUNCIL reaffirms its unswerving loyalty to the fundamental purpose of Freemasonry, which purpose from time immemorial has been to improveand strengthen the character of the individual man, and through the individual, thecharacter of the community, reinforcing those spiritual and moral values which givethe community its strength and stability. This Supreme Council believes that this purpose is to be attained by laying a broad

basis of principle upon which men of every race, country, sect, and opinion may unite.Believing that good and true men can be trusted to act well and wisely, this

Supreme Council considers it the duty of the Fraternity to impress upon its membersthe principles of personal righteousness and personal responsibility, to enlighten themas to those things which make for human welfare, and to inspire them with that feeling of charity, or well-wishing, toward all mankind which will move them to translate principle and conviction into action. To that end, Freemasonry requires of its members a belief in God and encourages

faith in God’s divine purposes and worship of God in conformity with the dictates ofindividual conscience. It stands for truth and justice, liberty and enlightenment, fraternity and philanthropy. This Supreme Council expects of its members strict obedience to the laws of the

land, and respect for their country’s flag.Such principles unite men and encourage the pursuit by them individually and

collectively of worthy endeavors and the attainment of the purposes inherent in them.In that unity human character achieves its highest unfolding and provides man’s besthope for peace on earth and good will among men.To the furtherance of these principles, all our ritual is directed and all our efforts

are aimed. To their furtherance each Master Mason has pledged himself, and at theportal of the Scottish Rite has renewed that pledge. This Supreme Council discountenances and rejects any attempt by any inter-

national groups or confederations of Scottish Rite Supreme Councils to legislate forindividual Supreme Councils.Recognizing that principles unite men, that programs sometimes divide them, and

that the preservation of unity of purpose and devotion to principle is essential toFreemasonry, the Supreme Council affirms its continued adherence to that ancient andapproved rule of Freemasonry which forbids the discussion within tyled doors ofcreeds, politics, or other topics apt to excite personal animosities. This Supreme Council further affirms its conviction that it is not only contrary to

the fundamental principles of Freemasonry, but exceedingly dangerous to its unity, strength, usefulness and welfare for Masonic Bodies in their official capacity to takeformal action or attempt to exercise pressure or influence for or against any particularlegislative project or proposal, or in any way to attempt to procure the election orappointment of Governmental officials, whether executive, legislative, or judicial orto influence them, whether or not members of the Fraternity, in the performance oftheir official duties.Adopted – September 20, 1923 Reaffirmed – September 27, 1934

A MESSAGE TO CANDIDATES

You are about to begin your pilgrimage through the Scottish Rite Degrees and it may become to you one of the greatest and most inspiring experiences of your life. If you become a Prince of the Royal Secret by receiving the Thirty-SecondDegree and are no better than when you began your adventure, your investment oftime and money will have been in vain. If, however, you bring a receptive mind anda sensitive heart to these degrees you will indeed be a wiser and a better man. Manymen have been reborn, intellectually and spiritually, during the conferring of theseDegrees. It is the hope and prayer of the Brethren that your experiences may be richand significant. While each of you will be a guest of the Scottish Rite bodies, you are requested,

nevertheless, to observe certain regulations and to cooperate closely with the classmarshals so that confusion and delay may be avoided as far as possible. A definitetime schedule is necessary and can only be maintained through the cooperation ofall, including each and every candidate.A full program of degree exemplifications has been scheduled and a concerted

effort has been made to present these degrees in a manner that will be an inducementto our candidates, as well as to our members, to return many times in the future towitness our Scottish Rite degrees.Through the use of authentic costuming, realistic scenery, effective lighting,

music and the beautiful language of the ritual, these degrees become highly dramaticpresentations which certainly should inspire and enable everyone who witnessesthem with an open heart and open mind to have a better understanding of the precepts of Freemasonry as a way of life and a deeper concept of his responsibilitiesas a man and a Mason. This, we believe, is highly important because at a time when the time-tested

principles that are so dear to Masons everywhere and that are so fundamental to ourAmerican way of life are being seriously challenged and threatened, the need for abetter understanding of the precepts of Freemasonry and a more determined resolveto carry our Masonic light into the world becomes increasingly urgent. We always look forward to each Scottish Rite Reunion as an opportunity to greet

old friends and to make new and lasting acquaintances, and let us never forget orunderestimate the value of true friendships. As we are taught in one of our degrees, life without friends, indeed, is worthless. We sincerely hope you will avail yourselves of the opportunity at this Reunion to

rededicate your lives to the precepts of our beloved Fraternity and assure you we shall endeavor to make your attendance both enjoyable andrewarding. In that connection, we are particularly anxious to make this Reunion oneof the best ever in every respect.

111th Spring Anniversary

MEMBERSHIPMembership is the lifeblood of our fraternity. In the past years, this

lifeblood has been draining away by deaths, demits, and indifference. We need the Brethren to be awakened to the needs of our fraternity. EachBrother must carry the word to other members and be concerned enough topetition new Masons. Each Brother must impart his enthusiasm to otherMasons so that the Membership Committee may realize its mission. As committee members we cannot continue to carry alone the burden of obtaining new members for the Valley. We must work to combat the indifference of some of our Brethren and band together to perpetuate theideals of our craft. The very survival of Scottish Rite Masonry in general andthe Valley of Williamsport in particular is dependent upon the MembershipCommittee getting its message across to the membership. New petitions areneeded to fill the ever increasing voids in our ranks. The Membership Committee has a formidable task ahead. The Valley of

Williamsport has been given the task of “0 or above” net members by theyear 2015. What that means is that the gains in membership (new membersand restorations to membership) must balance the losses in membership(deaths, nonpayment of dues, and demits.) Our research shows that ourValley must at least quadruple the size of each of our classes in order to comeclose to attaining this five-year membership goal.We have our work cut out for us. We must encourage membership in the

Blue Lodges and then encourage the seeking of more light by making the petitioning of the Scottish Rite bodies as attractive as possible. We must bepro-active in our approach with regard to membership. We cannot sit backand not try new things just because we “never did it that way before.” Wecontrol the very lifeblood of our fraternity; that lifeblood must reach out toall of the members so that each member of the Valley of Williamsportbecomes a representative of the Membership Committee.
