I Hope tHIs Issue oF tHe RIte neWs oF MARylAnD finds everyone in good health and ready for summer vacation. Even though the work never really stops, we just shift into a lower gear.

Even though some lodges go dark and the collateral bodies regroup for summer activities, we all seem to stay busy. We try to unwind a bit from the steady and very demanding fall, winter and spring. The Mary-land Scottish Rite is no exception; each valley had an extremely active season. Baltimore had its largest class since 1996 and across Maryland there were 118 new members initiated. The fall class for 2011 is already forming and it too looks like it will be very large. We have many new degrees planned for presentation.

The first annual Ladies Day dinner was held in Baltimore and was an overwhelming success. The play and dinner was enjoyed by nearly 200 members and guests. If you were not there, you missed one fantastic afternoon. Our clinics are doing a wonderful job and operating at near capacity. The recent clinic advertising campaign in Frederick, sponsored by the Albert and Etta Cohen Foundation, proved to be very successful and brought in several new clients from the Frederick area. The clinic’s annual Family Day Picnic was held at the new Grand Lodge pavilion and was a hit, as always. Our hats are off to MWGM Steve Ponzillo, III for the location.

I could go on and on about things happening around Maryland, but that is what the articles are for and I know space and attention is limited.

I want to mention our new 8’ x 12’ American Flag now being flown in Baltimore and featured on the front of this issue. Many of our members have fought

for this beautiful symbol of our great nation and there are many who served it in an untold number of ways to make sure it waves freely above our coun-try. This Independence Day, July 4, 2011, please take a moment to remember those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice that enable each of us to walk, talk and meet freely and without fear of repri-sal. Say a prayer for those who remain in harm’s way and continue to defend those rights that our fore-fathers cherished so dearly and passed on. May that flag, so recognized around the world as the symbol of freedom, wave over the land of the free and the home of our children’s children.

Now may God bless each of you and your family with health and happiness and may God bless the United States of America.

Well and enjoying the beautiful summer weather. For most of us, it is a welcome break from our daily routines and a chance to relax with family and friends.

It also is a great time to get to work and find new members for the Scottish Rite. Our Spring Class was the largest class in many years and it will take our hard work to make the Fall Class even bigger. Get those petitions out to your Blue Lodge Brothers.

Our next meeting for the Mary-land Council of Kadosh will be on Wednesday, September 21, with dinner at 6:45 and our meeting at 7, followed by a speaker. Please come out and enjoy an evening with your Brethren.

the clinic gives the Woman’s Club a “Wish list” of items for the clinic that will benefit the children they service. our fundraiser at this time is the raffle on a beautiful hand-stitched, queen size bed quilt, “log Cabin Diamond star Quilt”. tickets are $5.00 each or 5 tickets for $20.00.

As We usHeReD In spRIng this year with her eternal promise of the emergence of new life, longer days, and earth’s renewal, a similar event was happening at Baltimore’s Scottish Rite Masonic Center at 3800 North Charles Street. I was privileged to be a part of that event.

On March 23, more than 80 worthy Brothers as-sembled to receive our first orientation in taking the next step on our Masonic path. After checking in and making sure all the requisite forms were in order, we were measured for hats and rings, then given a tour and informational session about the one-day spring class on April 9, 2011. Imagine our surprise when, on the day of our class, we saw more than 100 brothers from not only Maryland but a variety of states and countries, making ours a truly international class! The Reunion Day spring class of 2011, held in honor of the Ill. William W. Mangels, 33°, was to be the largest class held in the Valley of Baltimore in over 20 years, signal-ing a renewal of interest in Scottish Rite Masonry and new life coming into the Orient of Maryland.

After an early—and I do mean early!—breakfast of coffee and donuts, we collected our nametags and adjourned to the classroom to start our journey. A

whirlwind election was held, in which we elected our class President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Orator. We were also given our class assign-ment, to raise money for a new sound system for the temple. We were then directed to the temple to receive our degrees and learn the meanings of the 4th–32nd degrees. The 14th, 18th, 30th, and 32nd degrees were all conducted in full form, complete with costumes and scenery. At the end of the ceremony, after all the degree work was done, the class gathered in front of the temple to have our class picture taken (wide angle lens NOT optional).

The 14th Degree Ring Ceremony was held the follow-ing day. The class once again assembled at the temple with our families and loved ones, where we were privileged to receive our 14th degree rings and share in fellowship and refreshments afterward with our new Scottish Rite Brothers and their families.

I’m sure I speak for the entire class in thanking everyone who helped make this next step so rewarding. We look forward to helping the Scottish Rite grow and, in the pro-cess, growing ourselves and becoming better Masons.

The Grand Lodge of Maryland statewide campaign to encourage men of all ages to join Freemason-ry is paying off in great numbers. The Scottish Rite is growing by a good number in the Cumberland area and throughout the state. The Blue Lodges may not have enough officer positions available for these new Master Masons. The Scottish

Rite has many positions of oppor-tunity for a new wave of Master Masons. In each of the twelve Ma-sonic Lodges in western Maryland from which we receive petitions, there are 22 diplomats ready, will-ing, and able to assist these new Master Masons in joining Scottish Rite. The fall one-day class in Cum-berland is scheduled for October 29, 2011, at 7:30 am.

To all members of the Scottish Rite, we need your help in many areas of degree work and behind-the-scenes preparation. If you can help in any way, please call me. The seeds of Scottish Rite Freemasonry will continue to grow, if we all pitch in and nourish our newfound wealth of future Master Masons.

laying will be held on June 12, 2011, at 12:30 pm in front of the Masonic Temple. The cornerstone was set in place on June 6, 1911. The Right Worshipful Deputy Grand Master of Masons in Mary-land, Gerald E. Piepiora, and the Grand Line will be performing the rededication. Plan to attend and be part of Masonic history.

A copy of the proclamation given by the Mayor & City Council of Cumberland recognizing the April 2 Masonic Open House was in-serted into the time capsule that was planted on May 8, 2011 in Cumberland. The time capsule was prepared in conjunction with the 200th Anniversary of the National Road and the 100th Anniversary of

the building of Cumberland City Hall. The capsule will be reopened in the year 2211.

gReetIngs BRetHRen! My, how time passes by, where did the first half of 2011 go? As the summer season is upon us, let us keep our thoughts and actions on the Scottish Rite path in Freemasonry.

We really had a good Spring Reunion, can you believe seven new members? Wow, that is great for the small Valley of Frederick. Thanks to all who enlisted the new members. Now we are looking into getting them involved and active in our lodge affairs. Since we will be idle for July and August, we will be planning for the fall season with degree teams for the fall recruits. Let us all look for new members from the Blue Lodges.

Please keep in touch with our ill and shut-in mem-bers confined to nursing or health institutions, as they need our support and thoughts.

Please join us for our breakfast meeting on the first Thursday of the month at Barbara Fritchie’s Restau-rant at 9am. We always have a great guest speaker, so come out and enjoy the fellowship.

I hope we all enjoy the Rite News of Maryland and the Scottish Rite Journal, as they keep us informed of the activities of Masonry and the Scottish Rite.

Door to Virtue Lodge #46 in Westminster. The 32 members,

ladies and guests were entertained with several beautiful

piano selections by Tim Bangerd, an outstanding pianist.

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, September 3

at 5:00 pm at the Door to Virtue Lodge #46 in Westminster.

Our meal that evening will be served by the Westminster

Assembly #245 Social Order of the Beauceant. The speaker

for the evening will be from our own Hilgenberg Scottish

Rite Childhood Speech and Language Center. Let’s see if

we can again have a good turnout and welcome the end of

summer and the beginning of fall.

MARylAnD DeMolAy is going strong and racing into a new time in our Jurisdiction. The Masonic Open House has brought new life and new possibilities. The five ac-tive Chapters in Maryland were able to cover 15 Lodges throughout the state for the Open House. Many surprises awaited us that day, from meeting a couple from England who wanted to bring DeMolay back to their country, to many interested young men looking to join. We would like to thank MWGM Ponzil-lo for having us take part in this most wonderful event.

Many Masons and their families have asked basic questions about our membership. We would like to give you a little insight at this time on Maryland DeMolay. We currently have five active Chapters: Nelson J. Briggs in Bel Air, Catonsville-Pal-estine in Catonsville, Frederick in Frederick, Chesapeake in La Plata, and Cumberland in Cumberland. We are 192 members strong and in-creasing every month. Last year we

were able to reach positive growth with 42 new members. Positive growth is bringing in more mem-bers than reach the age of majority. Unlike Masonry, our members reach senior status when they turn 21. Thus, we are in a constant rebuild-ing and maintenance process.

A common question about Maryland DeMolay is “Who can be an advi-sor?” Anyone can be an advisor after completing the DAD training course and a background check. This means that Masons are no longer the only persons who can be advi-sors, but only a Mason is allowed to be the Chairman of an Advisory Council, as he must act as the liaison between the sponsoring Masonic body and the Chapter, visiting the sponsoring body as a Mason.

We are very proud to announce that Maryland DeMolay is about to enter an expansion phase. Solo-mon’s Lodge in Savage has voted to sponsor a new DeMolay Chapter and is in the beginning stages of assembling the advisors and Chap-ter members. In the same week, we visited Patapsco Lodge to give a talk on starting a new Chapter. After talking with the member-ship and learning that they had 12 to 15 possible members and four Masons ready to become advisors,

they voted to sponsor a Chapter. Dundalk Chapter will be reopened at Patapsco Lodge and Glen Burnie Chapter will be reopened at Solo-mon’s Lodge. We are also working with Collington Lodge and Hager-stown Lodge in preliminary talks about Chapters.

The advantages of having a Chapter in your Lodge building are many and varied. DeMolays know about ritual and how to memorize. They know how to put passion into the ritual to convey the importance and solemnity of the degrees. They understand the floor work and movement around a lodge room. Most of them have been the leaders of their Chapters and understand what it takes to be in charge. Many of them will come into the Lodge while still in DeMolay, bringing an influx of young members. Most of all, you will have eager Brothers ready to help.

HAppy 4tH oF July from the Scottish Rite Childhood Speech and Language Center! We hope everyone is enjoying the summer weather. The official start of summer seems to be the annual Scottish Rite Family Day Picnic. This year’s picnic was held on June 11 and many of the clinic families attended, as well as many children of Masonic families. Everyone had a great time and we would like to thank the Masons for planning this fun-filled day!

Last year’s picnic kicked off the clinic’s 25th Anni-versary celebration. We would like to take this time to thank everyone that helped us commemorate and raise awareness of the Scottish Rite Childhood Speech and Language Center of Baltimore. Our Dragon Boat Race/Fundraising Event was an exciting and memora-ble way to celebrate our anniversary. We can’t thank you all enough for your support with this event and all other fundraising events held this past year.

The speech and language evaluations provided to the children of Frederick County in June were a success! These evaluations were generously supported by the Albert and Etta Cohen Fund and allowed us to help identify and treat several children with speech and language disorders from Frederick County.

In June, the Scottish Rite Childhood Speech and Lan-guage Center welcomed two new interns: Catherine Saporito and Julia Miller. Catherine Saporito is a gradu-ate student at Loyola College and a recipient of our Brockman Fellowship. Julia is a graduate student at

Towson University. Both women have been a wonder-ful addition to our clinic and we would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication.

As always, the Scottish Rite Woman’s Club has been extremely generous and continues to allow us the opportunity to provide our children and families with the most effective and efficient treatment. We thank them for their most recent charitable donations and for all of their continued support!

The average cost to tutor a child for one year is approximately $5,000. Typically, children require an average of two years of tutoring. Your tax-exempt contribution can make a real difference in these children’s lives.
