1st Documentary

Title: SlanguageDetails: Its about the use and misuse of the English language. It focuses on the use of slang and the influence of media on the English language.

They used this clip from BBC three which shows that the documentary is on this channel and it also makes it more realistic. Also there’s a good use of voiceover when this is shown.

WWW (what went well)

Good introduction of what the documentary will be about

They use other forms of presenting information instead of always talking like typing it on a computer screen for the audience to read.

They get feedback from members of the public to find out their views and it makes the documentary more realistic.

They use graphics and pictures usefully and it’s in sync with the voiceover.

EBI (even better if)•Whilst filming the computer screen the camera wasn't really steady.•At some points the music was louder than the person talking.•When they were interviewing the members of the public, sometimes the background noise interfered with their responses.

2nd DocumentaryName: Taboo inkDetails: It explores the popularity of tattoos in the contemporary UK and peoples perception of them.

WWW (what went well)

They used a clip from an advert on channel four which made it more realistic and added a voiceover.

They got the view points of other people on their perceptions of tattoos and these where taken in various locations.

Page 6: Analysis of year 13

Good use of locations and Camden is a very good location for the topic of this documentary.

The title written in ink on a body part is very effective as it has connotations to tattoos.

EBI (even better if)•The narrators voice was not very clear and couldn’t be heard clearly.•It would have been better if they also talked about the history of tattoos and not just peoples opinions on them.•The ending would have been better if they mentioned what they would be showing on the next episode.

3rd Documentary

Title: Gender based toysDescription: Its about how boys and girls are socialised in to playing with toys that are specific to their gender.

WWW (what went well)

A good variety of images of children playing in different locations.

They get interviews from professionals which makes the documentary seem more factual.

Page 8: Analysis of year 13

Good use of objects to present facts and figures.

Very good image of the brain and its movement.

They show previews of what they’ll be showing next episode.

Page 9: Analysis of year 13

EBI (even better if)

•There wasn’t really a wide variety of locations it was a bit limited.•They should have used a wider range of people to interview as this was very limited as well.•It would have been better if talked about other factors in gender socialisation because they focused on colours to much and became too repetitive.

Which documentary was most effective and why?

I think the documentary on name brands was the most effective because it was very relevant to the contemporary UK today as we are constantly faced with them everywhere we go. The topic of name brands is a topic that you can find lots of information on and this documentary is also able to explore how technology has influenced the popularity of name brands. They particularly focus on the apple brand which has become increasingly popular.

A wide range of shots of different brands.

•They went to a busy place where they could capture most of the brands they needed.•When they talk about apple they also talk about the history of apple advertising and how it has evolved and become popular.
