ANALYSIS OF GENRE CONVENTIONS

FIRST GENRE- POP MUSIC Pop music is a genre of music that has been made in the western culture

which is shortened from the word ‘popular’ music It is meant to describe music that is softer than rock and roll Pop music includes any music that is eclectic and borrows styles from

many other genres however pop music has to have key feautures: Repeated chouruses Short-medium length songs ‘verse-chorus’ structure Hooks- a short passage, riff or phases that makes a song appealing Needs to be short to medium length

POP GENRE ARTISTS One direction Justin Beiber Arianna Grande Sia The Weeknd Little Mix Katy Perry Ed Sheeran James Arthur

LITTLE MIX- LOVE ME LIKE YOU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WpoKRnoPRU

SETTING(MISE-EN-SCENE) Prom/ dance Cinema Park Basketball court Outside a house Bathroom

STYLE Performance-narrative Parts of the song is sung by the girls, and in the verses, there is often a

story told, a different girl in each verse

CAMERA WORK (SHOTS, ANGLES AND MOVEMENT) A lot of jump cuts – quickly tells an individuals story quickly Lot of cutaways- it will cutaway to the story and quickly back to the prom

this shows ’the ending’ of it Angles are often face or side on Camera is either tracking, panned or still Depth of field or focus is used to define the girl who is singing/ of

importance to the viewer at the time

REPRESENTATIONS Women are represented as weak and need a man, Women put in typical boy- girl sdenarios e.g. being picked up in a nice car,

girls watching boys play in a game of basketball, being taken to the cinema, embarassing yourslef infront of someone you fancy

Women- twirl hair at the sight of a man they like, looks innocent and ‘cute’ Sterotype of girls going toilet together, all cry over boys All girls want is love Men are seen as disgusting e.g. picking nose, spiking the drinks, being with

other women Red lipstick- sexual

COSTUME, PROPS AND COLOUR All dressed up- prom- the colours the women wear The main prop that was emphasized was the corsage as each of the girls

received one from the boy they thought they were going prom to, this helps to tell the story

In the cutaways the girls are wearing some sort of outfit that suits the situation e.g. fancy car= skirt and blazer, the park= casual top and jeans

EDITING AND LIGHTING(MISE-EN-SCENE)

The sun has been used to create a ’dreamy effect’ e.g. when the girl and boy walk off into the sunset (examples on the next slide)

Lighting has also been used to distinct the main characters from everyone else by putting them into the spotlight

Lighting has also been used to set the mood, when the girls are happy and very thing is lovey dovey, the lighting is natural and bright and when the girls are unhappy the light is dull and focus is distracted from them

EXAMPLES

REPRESENTATION OF GENRE CHARACTERISTICS Colourful, fun and dancing Love (boy interest) Catchy hooks ‘shalalala’ Reptition of chourus Was in top charts internationally Girl band (typically pop)

RELATION TO GOODWINS THEORY Music and visuals link up as the girls lip-synch It is a hybrid of narrative and performance They’re notions of looking, however in most of these cases it is the girl who

looks at the boy, objectifing the man rather than the women, this is not normally the case

It conveys typical genre characteristics, girls like to dress up, want a good looking boy to take them to prom, fun, young

LYRICS IN RELATION TO GENRE Shalalala L.O.V.E love the way you give it to me- love is often related to pop music Song often talks about boys- very apparent in their type of target auidence

for this type of music (teenage girl)

SUB-GENRE- POP ROCK Pop rock is rock music that has more of a resemblence to pop music as its

softer Originated in the early 50’s as an alternative to rock and roll Also described as an ‘upbeat variety of rock music’

HEATHENS- 21 PILOTS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UprcpdwuwCg

STYLE/SETTING(MISE-EN-SCENE)

Performance- performance based and narrative Location- prison cells and prison basement

CAMERA (SHOTS, ANGLES, MOVEMENT) Fast paced As the song is from the film ‘suicide squad’ it often flashes to parts of the

film Camera movements are fast, keeping in theme with the genre The camera movement is often either tracking or panned, maintaining fast

pace Kept interesting through fast paced action Angles include birds eye view, point of view,

LYRICS ‘heathens’ is a person who doesn’t belong to a wide spread religion e.g.

Christians, Muslims- this may mean that they lack in moral priciples ‘all my friends are heathens, take it slow means that all his prison friends

are there because they lack moral priciples Using ’heathens’ in helps with the genre conventions as heathens is a

could result in a form of rebellion which rock music is often about/ represents

COSTUME/ PROPS AND COLOUR(MISE-EN-SCENE) Based in a prison- typical orange scrubs, opposes dark background Performers in yellow jacket and black Security guard- dressed in black, formal

EDITING/LIGHTING(MISE-EN-SCENE) Lighting was used to highlight prisoners All artificial lighting All dark unless the camera focuses onto a cell/person Darkness is a reflection of what prison life is like, it is kept dull to reflect

prisoners emotions, keeping in with the genres characteristics as its pop rock is not a light and fun compared to normal ’pop’

The mood of the music video is mainly set by the location, it is dark, and has low key lighting

RELATION TO GOODWINS THEORY Music and visuals link Lyrics and visuals link, it is performance Genre characteristics It is performance- ad Goodwin suggests music videos must be either a

hybrid of perfomance, conceptual and narrative There is no aspect of vouyerism/ notions of looking as there is no love

interest

21 PIOLETS- STRESSED OUT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXRviuL6vMY

STYLE Performance- often which most rock and roll music videos are Locations: Street Lounge Bedroom White wall

UNCONVENTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS The inclusion/ introduction of family

EDITING/LIGHTING (PART OF MISE-EN-SCENE) Filmed on a cloudy/dull day Natural lighting for the most part Indoor scenes= artificial lighting

CAMERA (SHOTS, ANGLES &MOVEMENTS) Zoom varied on shots Angles- face on or from the side A lot of handheld camera- this makes it feel more real Camera always followed the lead singer

COSTUME/ PROPS AND COLOUR Casual- tops, jeans, backpacks Quirky characteristics- coloured hair, peircings, tattoos- all often associated

with rock Backpack and bike- young, fun and free- pop Bikes- makes the characters would typically make characters look ‘hard’

but as they aren’t motorbikes, it just looks fun- which is associated more with pop

Drums and microphone- rock Colours kept dull- even filmed on a cloudy day- only pop of colour is the red

hat and beanie and clothes are kept black and white- makes the main artist stand out

LYRICS Songs theme: Stress, depression, and nostalgia for simpler times Follows the pop music pattern An interview with radio.com, we are told that blurryface is the act of

putting black makeup on your hands and neck in which Tyler wears in the video, it is meant as a metaphor for the feeling of suffocation caused by stress-often things/issues that are expressed in rock music

RELATION TO GOODWINS THEORY Lyrics and visuals link- it is partly performance therefore there is a lot of lip

synching It has genre characteristics, it is pop/rock the way in which is represented

through the use of instruments (the drums and microphone is concidered very pop rock), the colour scheme, red, black and white and finally the way in which they are dressed as the stars, beanies and stretchers give off the current alternative/edgy look.

It is a performance video- as suggested by Goodwin a video must be either or a hybrid of conceptual, narrative or performance

There is no voyerism/ notions of looking, this is mainly down to the lack in a love interest, which suits the genre
