Student Learning, Engagement & Wellbeing Last newsletter I shared some of the amazing learning data that our students had achieved in Semester One. This edition I would like to share some of the student engagement and wellbeing data from 2019. At the beginning of each year we set targets across many areas of schooling, and look for evidence to measure our success on these targets. One data set we use is the Department of Education’s Student Attitudes to School Survey, which is delivered to our Year 4, 5 and 6 students each year. This survey examines how our students are feeling about their school, teachers and learning. The table below shows the achievement that we have made in this area over the last 18 months, and indicates that students at Anakie Primary School are confident, engaged and resilient learners. It was pleasing to achieve a good response in regard to attitudes towards attendance. 97% of students believed that good school attendance was important to both themselves and their parents. We look forward to seeing this reflected in our daily attendance tracking. Our staff were extremely happy with this data and look forward to continuing to support our students in achieving excellence.

Athletics Success Congratulations to all 5 of our students who competed at the District Aths a couple of weeks ago. All 5 of our students made it through to the next level of competition and will be competing in events at the Regional Athletics on September 10. What an amazing accomplishment - Brandon, Mackenzie, Gemma, Charlie and Indi … we are so proud of you!!

Staffing Dee is currently off on long service leave, and returns for the last week of term. We are very lucky to have Miss Hodge replace Dee in the Out of School Care program and also classroom support during this time.

Swimming Program 100% of our students will be participating in our swimming program this year. Thank you to parents for filling in and returning necessary paperwork. A note with additional information will be sent home next week to begin preparing for this 5 day program, which runs from September 16-20.

Parent Opinion Survey Thank you to the 22 families who completed the DET Parent Opinion Survey over the last 3 weeks. We welcome feedback so that we can continue to make Anakie Primary School even better!

Routleys Pie Run Last night our School Council approved a PFA Pie Run. This afternoon you will receive information which will enable you to order some delicious Routleys products, perfect for an easy but delicious Winter dinner, or to stock the freezer with. Order forms are due back next Friday August 30, and products will be distributed on Friday September 6 (Footy Colours Day). All proceeds from this venture will go towards supporting the JSC in their quest to raise funds to replace the blue poles in the playground.

JSC News Thank you to our Semester 1 Junior School Council members. You set the bar very high with your passion, commitment and fund raising initiatives. Our new Council will be announced at assembly on Friday. Last week our JSC chose to donate a number of boxes of second hand books to the Aboriginal Literacy Fund. What a great venture to support! Next Friday September 6 is the JSC Sports Colours Day, where students are requested to bring a gold coin donation to dress in their favourite sporting team colours. The children will be involved in footy rotations during their PE sessions on this day, and all proceeds raised will again go towards the replacement of the blue poles. Thank you to our PFA for providing a special lunch for students this day.

Book Week Dress Up Day Don’t forget we have our Book Week dress up day this Friday. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We will have our Book Week Parade at 9.05am on the basketball court (weather permitting), and encourage all parents and carers to come along and watch. There are lots of fun activities planned for the students on this day which are related to the CBC shortlisted picture story books.

Bunnings Fundraiser Don’t forget this major fundraiser is taking place on Saturday September 6. Enormous thanks to the many parents who are taking up a timeslot and manning the stall at the North Geelong store on this day, and to our PFA for their fab organisation.

Concert A flyer will be coming home on Friday with more information about our Bush Dance themed concert, scheduled for Thursday September 19. The kids have been busy practicing a range of different dances, so don’t forget to polish off your boots in anticipation this fun family event!

Toucan Thank you to the families who have made donations to the Geelong Food Relief’s Toucan Appeal. The food items that have been donated will be collected at the end of this week.

Tissues At the beginning of each year we request that each family donate a box or two of tissues for our classrooms. Thank you to those parents who have assisted with this request, and in particular the families who continue to donate boxes of tissues each term for their child’s class. Our sincere thanks!

Wrapper Free Wednesday’s Well done to our students and families who have shown a great commitment to Wrapper Free Wednesday. It is lovely to see how proud the students are when they open their lunchboxes on a Wednesday. Keep the nude food coming!

Student Dress Code One of the first things I notice when I go into a classroom in any school is whether the students are in full school uniform or not. To me, this is a strong indicator of high expectations. Our student dress code policy is due for review and I am seeking input from our parents before this is finalised. Many factors must be considered when reviewing a dress code, including affordability, comfort and safety. Next Monday I will be sending out a draft of our new policy to each family and request your feedback on this document. Once finalised, the new policy will come into effect in 2020 (which will include a transition phase). Thank you to our parents who ensure that their children are in full school uniform each day. Our students respond so well to clear and consistent expectations.

Art Garden Feature The students have been very busy decorating rocks for the Garden Feature at the front of the school. Don’t forget to have a look at this next time your walking by. A BIG thank you to Mrs. Thompson and Kirsty Holden for their work around this.

This is what we have been learning in the P/1/2 classroom…….in case you missed it! The last two weeks we have been lucky enough to have Miss Clamp teaching in the P/1/2 classroom. She has been teaching the students how to count groups of money, how to write procedural texts on ‘How to make sandwiches’ and ‘Wombat Stew’, and also how to predict the solution in picture story books. We have also been learning where Australia is on a map in Inquiry and how to use Google Maps to explore different countries. On Monday we explored the streets of Canada and Peru and looked closely at the roads, buildings, cars, shops and people in those countries.

Book Week Celebration Day on Friday is fast approaching… Miss Clamp and I are very excited to see what the children dress up as on Friday. A big thank you to the family members for organising an outfit, I’m sure the children appreciate all of your hard work!

What the 5/6 classroom has been up to……..

In English we have been discussing inference. Inferential comprehension is the ability to process written information and understand the underlying meaning. Through our class novel and independent reading, we

have considering and discussing our comprehension skills.

There were some outstanding gains on our topic Fractions and Decimals. Many students have demonstrated a better understanding of these mathematical concepts, and our post test gave students both positive feedback and some goal setting areas for future learning. This week we have started our topic Money and

Financial Mathematics. This is a great opportunity for students to complete some Maths Nights by helping with shopping and household budgets.

Attendance update: 100% attendance—41 out of a possible 116.

Assembly presenters this week: Charlotte and Holly

What you might have missed in Year 3/4 Well, here we are in Week 6 … where has the time gone? Congratulations to our Year 3 campers, you displayed our Anakie values and showed brilliance at Angahook. Our classroom is humming along and we have been busy publishing our expositions on topics that the students are passionate about. The students have learnt how to finger spell their names in Inquiry and our next focus will be on researching a disability and presenting this to the class. This week is Book Week and on Friday there will be a rotation of fun craft activities based on the shortlisted books, as well as a Book Tasting. I’m really excited about our Book Week Celebration and can’t wait to see the amazing costumes that our students wear as their Book Week character. Our learning throughout the next fortnight will focus on the following: Reading—We are concentrating on summarising. Writing—We are focusing on Procedural Text, and in Mathematics—We are concentrating on creating and interpreting graphs.
