Congratulations to the raffle winners who all won a beautiful piece of art work —Oscar E, Bianca N and Mrs Thompson. Most surprising was the winner of the People’s Choice art work … the staff auction item. Boy were we surprised by this! We definitely won’t be giving up our day jobs to pursue an art career! The winner of the ‘Guess the Staff Artwork’ competition was Georgie Popple (Karen’s daughter). Georgie won an art and stationery pack. Whilst the purpose of this event was to showcase our student’s art work, we also raised over $1,300. Enormous thanks must go to Heather, who secured funding to support this important collaboration between the school and the Community House.

Lion’s Club Ambassador Speech Night Well done to Annalise, Jaii, Jayla and Jye, who delivered their speeches at the Lion’s Club Speech Night at Little River PS last fortnight. All four students did a brilliant job in preparing engaging speeches, and delivered these with confidence and clarity before an audience of other school students, staff and family members. We are very proud of you!

Book Fair Anakie Primary School is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair from 3.30-4.00pm after school until this Friday November 30. There are some lovely books and stationery items on display, perfect for Christmas gifts or a holiday read.

Our students continue to work hard at school and have been undertaking a number of assessments to measure this semester’s learning growth. It is pleasing to report that there has been pockets of significant growth and students are beginning to greatly value their learning time.

Demonstrating Resilience As a result of a very comprehensive School Review last year, a major focus this year has been encouraging a positive mindset throughout our school community. This involves taking on new challenges, persisting when things get tough and looking on the positive side of a situation rather than anticipating the worst. As adults, it is important that we also model this behaviour and demonstrate a positive mindset. All challenges present new opportunities ... it’s important to be curious and try new things. Well done to our students who show resilience and demonstrate a growth mindset towards life and learning.

Art Show Success We enjoyed tremendous Art Show success last fortnight. Thank you to everyone who supported this major event by helping out or attending this event. Enormous thanks to the parents who formed our Art Show Committee, we are so grateful for your support!

Christmas Treats As we approach the festive season, it’s important to remember that we do not permit students to bring Christmas sweets to school to share with other students. Though the gesture is meant as a positive, students with dietary issues are disadvantaged here.

MARC Van Books

There are a number of MARC Van books that are now overdue. If you currently have an overdue book, could you please have a big hunt at home and return them to school as soon as possible. Please note that it does not need to be a MARC Van day for these to be returned. Thank you for your support here.

2019 Transition We had a lovely transition session on Monday morning which saw our 3 new preppies enjoy time with their 2019 classmates. Thank you to the many parents who made our new families feel welcome at Anakie Primary. Students across all grades also had the opportunity to move into their 2019 classes, as will be the case for our next two transition mornings on Wednesday December 5, followed by Tuesday December 11.

Thank You Thank you to both the PFA and all families who supported the recent Election BBQ. This was a very successful event and raised over $220 after costs. It was lovely to have the engagement of families to support this event, which will benefit school and learning opportunities for all students.

Chickens The Prep-2 children have had a very exciting week with the arrival of baby chickens. The students have been studying Life Cycles in Science, and the arrival of the chicks have made this Inquiry topic a very exciting one. Thank you to Tammy Todd and family for the loan of the incubator and eggs to ensure this exciting learning opportunity.

Student Leadership Process for 2019 We have conducted Anakie’s annual process to vote on our 2019 school leaders and award recipients. This involved speeches from our current Year 5 students, and voting undertaken by all Prep—5 students. Staff have counted up the votes and we look forward to sharing the results at the whole school Celebration and Graduation Night on Tuesday December 18. I must say that the quality of the speeches made by the Year 5 students was quite extraordinary. Well done everyone!

Bushfire Safety Anakie Primary School is listed on the DET Bushfire At Risk Register (BARR). This means that the school will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined by our Bureau of Meteorology district. Families will be advised via SMS and School Stream posts of this decision. Please ensure that we have your current contact details and download the School Stream app on your phone. More information on the BARR was sent home last week.

School Dismissal A reminder that dismissal time at Anakie Primary School is 3.30pm. There seems to be an excessive number of occasions when parents are late to pick up their children. Please know that this impact on teacher’s work hours, as they are often required to attend planning and assessment meetings at the end of the school day. Waiting for parents who are late impacts on start times for

these meetings. We do operate a very reasonably priced Out of School Hours Care Program to support parents. Please remember to ring through and let us know if your require this service on a permanent or occasional basis.

Head lice

As there have been incidents of head lice reported to the school, it is important that parents check their child’s hair regularly and administer a treatment if lice are found.

Parent Payments Thank you to all families who have already settled their 2018 financial contributions. As we move towards the end of the year, all payments of outstanding amounts is appreciated asap. Please see Karen in the office if you have any questions. Also, if you live more than 4.9kms from Anakie Primary School you may be eligible for conveyancing (travel) allowance. Again, please see Karen for more information.

MARC Program Thank you to all of the staff, students and parents for a wonderful year of M.A.R.C.in 2018. We have shared an exciting year of learning together; writing our own picture story-books, poems, comparing and contrasting, debating, analysing authors, studying indigenous history, retelling dreamtime stories, theorising about themes and developing our very own class newspapers - just to name a few! However the most exciting part of being the M.A.R.C. van teacher has been seeing the enjoyment on the student’s faces when they found their ‘just right’ book in the van especially after the category based non-fiction book boxes were introduced towards the later part of this year. 2019 will hold an exciting new teaching challenge for me as I commence a new teaching role pursuing my passion in Performing Arts and English in a secondary school located in Geelong. I will miss working with your children and seeing their happy smiles each morning as the van arrives at their school but I know they will continue to embrace the M.A.R.C. program with their wonderful new teacher next year. Happy reading and best wishes, Miss Walker M.A.R.C. teacher

(Note: We have interviewed for a new MARC teacher this week

and I will be excited to announce Miss Walker’s replacement once

the process is finalised)

Story Time Our next Story Time session for 3 and 4 year old pre school will be next Tuesday December 4 from 12.15-1.00pm. All 3/4 year old

pre school children welcome! Don’t forget ... Assembly this Friday afternoon (Parents and grandparents are most welcome, 3.00pm start time in anticipation of another exciting performance, this week will be a dance from our Lunchtime Activities Group).

This is what we have been learning in the P-2 classroom…….in case you missed it! Classroom Corner….

What a busy time of year this is! We are celebrating so many achievements; Art Show, Transition session 1 and our chickens hatching. MVA sports last Friday was sensational and congratulations to all of our students who displayed the Anakie values and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and manners. Thank you to all of the parents who supported this event by providing transport to and from Inverleigh P.S. What a wonderful way to end a week! Just a reminder we have our Responsible Pet Ownership Incursion this Friday. A note has been sent home detailing this free incursion and we look forward to learning all about being responsible pet owners. We will also have a note coming home in regard to our Quantum Excursion on Friday 7th of December. Any questions, please come and see us. During Reading Miss Pickering’s group are working on summarising while Mrs Bubb’s group are working on making inferences. In Writing, both groups are working on narratives by creating interesting stories and adding detail. In Maths Mrs Bubb’s group is working on place value and shapes while Miss Pickering’s

group is working on time and place value.

What the 5/6 classroom has been up to……..

Our reading has focused on prediction. Students are retaining key elements of our class novel and making predictions about how the story will develop. In groups, and as a class we have been discussing these predictions, giving sound reasons for our choices. Informative writing is continuing with our visit from the CFA giving us great data about bushfires in Victoria to complement our previous knowledge. In Maths we have analysed percentages in data. We have looked at how to calculate using large and small data sets. This gave us an opportunity to use data from newspapers such the state election results. This Friday we are off to the Ball Games at Inverleigh Recreation Reserve. Thanks to those who returned their notes early! Attendance update: 100% attendance days – 77 out of a possible 189. Assembly presenters this week: Elle and Jayla.

What you might have missed in Year 3/4 With only three and half weeks left we are working hard to complete everything and build in some fun also. In Reading we are focussing on our fluency and making sure we read what is written on the page. Also we must listen to what we are reading to make sure it is making sense. We have started writing our persuasive pieces, so watch out for some persuasive language coming your way when the students try to persuade you to get they something they want! In Mathematics we have been working on building a geometry city in teams. The students have developed construction teams and are designing a city based on a them that they have chosen. Some cities are coming along nicely and I would definitely use their construction companies. In Inquiry we have begun our islands. The students have mapped them out, decided on the longitude and latitude and the weather that will prevail on their island. Flags and coats of arms have been designed and made. Looking forward to the finished product in the coming weeks.

Student Leaders Piece This week the Book Fair is at Anakie Primary School. We

encourage everyone to come and buy a book, maybe even a novelty item to go with it. If you buy a book you get 3 guesses for

the jellybean jar. Whoever gets the closest guess, gets the jellybeans!

There are 16 new baby chickens who have just hatched from the P-2 classroom. The P-2 students have been looking after them with the help of Mrs Bubb and Miss Pickering. Thank you to Tammy for

giving us the eggs and incubator to use the term. The P-2’s enjoyed watching the eggs hatch as part of their life cycle studies.
