The Ontario Prospectors Association has witnessed a banner year in explorationin Ontario and around the world. The OPA has heard from numerous members

about new discoveries and subsequent option agreements that result in theeconomic stimulation of Ontario.

In the last year we have had some interesting developments on the mining side ofthe business. Ontario’s first diamond mine is in development. The merger of Incoand Falconbridge and the emergence of smaller mining companies are changingthe operational landscape of Sudbury. On the gold side the power of last year’sGoldcorp merger is being seen with the purchase of Placer Dome’s Ontario assets.In the PGE business the Sudbury area is a hot exploration location, NorthAmerican Palladium continues its expansion underground and Marathon PGM ismoving rapidly to being a potential producer. The northeast of the province isbooming with gold exploration, development and mining. In Timmins, LakeShore Gold has unlocked the 100 year old mystery of gold mineralization west oftown. St. Andrews and the Porcupine Joint Venture are continuing their successand production. Kirkland Lake Gold has used modern computer technology tounravel some of the complexity of the Kirkland Lake gold mineralization.

These are only a few of the extremely active areas and projects in Ontario.Buoyant commodity prices have driven the demand for quality explorationproperties. The surge in all commodity prices has seen companies looking at nontraditional metals such as iron or uranium, which most explorers hadn’t eventhought about for decades. Most of the economists that have commented on thecommodity demand believe this upturn will be sustained for the next few years ata minimum.

Prospectors are under pressure to find new occurrences to feed the requirementsof the exploration companies. Ontario’s highly prospective and varied geology isrenowned and is drawing explorers from all over the world.

The Ontario Prospectors Association is confident the prospectors of Ontario willrise to the demand for new properties and have another successful year!

The 2006 edition of the Ontario Mining &Exploration Directory comes at a very excitingtime in the history of mineral development inthis province.

Ontario’s mineral sector is enjoying a boom thelikes of which we have not seen since the1980s. Commodity prices are at record highsand opportunities to grow and prosper abound. Three new mines have beenopened over the last year and near record levels of mineral exploration are leadingto the discovery of exciting new potential mineral deposits. With the recentsigning of an agreement between DeBeers Canada and the Attawapiskat FirstNation, we are on the verge of witnessing the establishment of Ontario’s firstdiamond mine.

Our government is keenly aware of this sector’s tremendous potential and we areworking with our mining industry stakeholders on many fronts to ensure thatOntario remains a global leader. That is one reason we work with the OntarioProspectors Association to produce this annual compendium which contains somuch valuable information about mineral exploration companies and miningoperations in Ontario. We are investing $15 million over three years to undertakegeological mapping to help unlock the mineral potential in parts of Ontario’s FarNorth. We are working with the Ontario Mineral Industry Cluster Council toidentify opportunities to enhance competitiveness, innovation, and investment inOntario’s mineral cluster. We are also assisting producers by investing in researchinto deep mining capabilities, which will help extend the life of existing mines.

I take pride in the high quality of programs and services the ministry provides themining industry with geological maps, inventories of mineralization, access tohistorical geological information and the considerable expertise found in ourOntario Geological Survey. The government’s award-winning CLAIMaps systemprovides free, online access to province-wide digitized maps and mining landinformation. Our mining legislation is a model for other countries around theglobe.

The economic benefits of mineral production are taking root throughout the entireprovince and particularly in Northern Ontario. Promoting mineral development inOntario is a task our government takes seriously. We will continue workingdiligently to build on our status as a world leader in mineral exploration anddevelopment.

Canadian Environmental and Metallurgical Inc. is well recognized and is an industry leader specializing in contaminated effluent treatment, specifically the High Density Sludge (HDS) process for acid mine drainage (AMD) and acid rock drainage (ARD) neutralization, metal precipitation, and sludge stabilization. The highly focused technology group offers innovative and cost effective solutions to water treatment. CEMI owns and operates a mobile pilot plant used to develop plant design parameters and engineering criteria for the HDS process. CEMI has also developed an inexpensive process to remove selenium and arsenic to < 0.5 u/L which is highly automated, low operating cost, produces extremely low volumes of sludge compared lime treatment,and small installation footprint.
