On returning, Fleming no ticed that one culture wasco ntaminated with a f ungus, and that the co lonies of

staphylococc

i that had immediately surr ounded it hadbeen destr oyed, whereas o ther co lonies f urther away

were normal. Fleming showed the co ntaminated cultureto his former assistant Merlin Price who said "T hat' s how

you disco v ered lysoz yme." [6] Fleming identif ied themould that had co ntaminated his culture plates as beingf r om the Penicilliumgenus, and, af ter some months of

calling it" mould j uice" named the substance it released

penicillinon 7 Mar ch 1929.[7]

Principals of InnovationPrincipals of InnovationIdeas are fragile.Ideas are organic.

All ideas have value and should be givena hearing.

The originator of an idea needsassistance in idea enhancement and inpromoting the idea internally.

The originator is the initial advocate of

an idea and should be actively involvedin its development.Only ideas which have been enhanced todemonstrate potential value will bebrought to management.

Process of InnovationProcess of Innovation

The Innovation process can bedepicted as a series of funnels

each getting progressively smaller. Typically sixty ideas into the topfunnel only produces just oneinnovation.

The funnels are labeled as thefour phases in the process - ideageneration, idea screening, feasibility and implementation.

Effectiveness Criteria for an

Innovation process

Effectiveness Criteria for an

Innovation processImplement a few ideas at regular intervalsEnsure feedback takes place - there must becommunication channels to originators.Screening system should be simple, understood by everyoneEnsure the system is promoted

Transform ideas into reality at a reasonable speed - if thesystem is too slow we may be too slow to react to themarket pace and turn off idea originators.
