Calhoun Middle School An International Baccalaureate School Mr. Long – Algebra I Course Syllabus Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. We are going to have an extraordinary year of learning together. If we work together, as a team, we are going to have great success. I am very excited to be your teacher and I hope you look forward to a successful year. To help meet the expectation of success, you can use this syllabus to familiarize you with what is expected. COURSE OBJECTIVE In Algebra I, instructional time is focused on the following areas: (1) gaining an understanding of the properties of real numbers; (2) formalize the language of functions and explore the behavior of functions numerically, graphically, analytically, and verbally; (3) use technology to discover relationships, test conjectures, and solve problems; (4) write expressions, equations, and inequalities from physical models; (5) communicate mathematics understanding formally and informally. UNITS OF STUDY • Unit #1: Equations and Inequalities • Unit #2A: Representations of Functions • Unit #2B: Slope, Direct Variation, & Arithmetic Sequences • Unit #2C: Forms of Linear Functions, Inequalities, & Regressions • Unit #3: Systems of Equations & Inequalities • Unit #4A & 4B: Exponential Relationships & Radicals • Unit #5A: Graphing Quadratic Functions • Unit #4C: Polynomial Operations and Factoring • Unit #5B: Solving Quadratic Equations • Unit #6: Graphs and Statistics GRADING POLICY A student’s overall grade for each grading cycle will consist of two categories 1) Major Summative Assessments (MaSA), 70% of the overall grade per cycle, and 2) Minor Summative Assessments (MiSA), 30% of the overall grade per cycle. Grades will reference their progress on the TEKS in each unit, and will be updated periodically. This year we will be implementing the IB grading rubric. Information will be posted on my website and on Google Classroom. For further information, please contact me. No one grade in any category can count more than 1/3 of the overall grade for that category in any grading cycle. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY Calhoun Middle School is committed to academic honesty and scholarly integrity. The school can best function and accomplish its mission in an atmosphere of the highest ethical standards. All members of the school are expected and encouraged to contribute to such an environment by observing all accepted principles of academic honesty. Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to: plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, grade tampering, misuse of computers and other electronic technology, and facilitating academic dishonesty. Those found in violation may also be subject to potential disciplinary sanctions under The Calhoun Middle School Code of Conduct. REASSESSMENTS/CORRECTIONS POLICY Any student can request for the opportunity to reassess on any Major Summative Assessments, excluding semester exams. Students who score below a grade of 80, will be required to reassess. Reassessment requirements are listed below. 1. Use the Correction Form to correct all problems that pertain to the TEK(s) to be reassessed. 2. Have a parent/guardian review and sign the correction form for completion. 3. Attend a mandatory tutorial session to review TEK(s) to be reassessed and complete an alternative assignment. (Be sure to bring ALL completed work and corrections.) 4. Submit a completed Request for Reassessment Form, a completed Correct Form with original attached. 5. Attend a scheduled reassessment session. Grades will be adjusted within 24-48 hours after the reassessment date.

BEHAVIOR POLICY All students have the right to, and should expect to learn. All individuals are worthy of respect. Orderliness in the classroom is necessary in order to be effective. Expectations
• Do things that will not prevent me from teaching, nor you or others from learning.

ABSENCES: You should make every effort to attend class daily. However in the event that you are absent you should know that it is your responsibility to get lecture information, notes, and assignments that were completed. You should schedule an appointment to complete any missed major or minor summative assessments assigned/completed. Just because you were absent does not excuse you form work that was missed. You should also turn in any work that was due the day(s) you were absent upon your return. You will be given the number of days absent plus one to complete any work assigned/completed. Visit my website for lecture videos, notes and assignments. HOMEWORK Completing math homework is essential to success in math. Expect homework in math at least 3 if not 5 days a week. Homework is not a punishment, but a valuable tool to help your student succeed in math. Homework will be checked during class, but not graded. Parents, your child will always receive written and oral directions for all class work, homework, and tests. Time will be given in class to write down their daily assignments in their planner. Assignments will also be integrated periodically on my website and in Google Classroom and should be checked throughout the week. TUTORIALS: Ask for extra help if you need it! If you are “stuck” on some topic, don’t just give up and hope it will “go away.”
It won’t. There are several opportunities each day for help, you just have to ask and be willing to attend
tutorials on YOUR time. I am available during lunch and after school Monday through Thursday between 3:45
and 5:00. All before school and after school tutorials are by appointment only. Students can setup
appointments through Google Classroom. Also, please keep in mind that tutorial times may change without
notice. If you have a question about tutorials, please communicate with your teacher.

AUSENCIAS:
Usted debe hacer todo lo posible para asistir a clase todos los días. Sin embargo, en el caso de que usted está
ausente usted debe saber que es su responsabilidad de obtener información de conferencias, notas y tareas
que se completaron. Usted debe hacer una cita para completar las evaluaciones acumulativas mayores o
menores perdidas asignados / completados. Sólo porque usted estaba ausente no disculpan a entregar el
trabajo que se perdió. También debe de entregar cualquier trabajo que se debió el día en el que estaba
ausente (s) estuvo ausente a su regreso. Se le dará el número de días de ausencia más uno para completar

OBLIGACIONES:
Completar la tarea de matemáticas es esencial para el éxito en matemáticas. Cuente con la tarea de
matemáticas al menos 3 si no 5 días a la semana. La tarea no es un castigo, sino una herramienta valiosa para
ayudar a su hijo a tener éxito en matemáticas. La tarea será verificada durante la clase, pero no será calificada.
En clase, su hijo siempre recibe instrucciones orales para todos los trabajos de clase, tareas, y exámenes
escritos y. Tiempo se dará en clase para anotar sus tareas diarias en su agenda. Misiones también estarán

TUTORIAS:
Pida ayuda adicional si usted lo necesita! Si usted está "atascado" en algún tema, no se de por vencido/a y no
espere que "desaparezca". El trabajo no va a desaparecer. Hay varias oportunidades cada día en busca de
ayuda, sólo hay que preguntar y estar dispuesto a asistir a clases particulares en su tiempo. Estoy a su
disposición durante el almuerzo con cita previa y después de clases de lunes a jueves 3:45-5:00. Desayuno
Tutoriales también están disponibles en las mañanas en la cafetería de lunes a viernes 07:30-8:15. También,
