DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Standing out from the maze of management education institutions dotting the country’s landscape, DMI, Patna has carved out a place of pride for itself, as it marches on to achieving its core mandate of ’Empowering Grassroots’. The
Institute’s two-year Post Graduate Programme in Development Management (PGDM) offered at its Patna Campus is designed to develop leaders and managers who can challenge the status quo and co-create institutions for participatory governance and management of resources and enterprises for enhancing livelihoods and ushering in sustainable development.
Duly recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), DMI’s PDM course provides an opportunity for the participants to empathize with, investigate and understand the challenges and complexities of development through a unique blend of interactive classroom sessions and experiential learning. Given this rigour of learning processes facilitated by a world class team of faculty from the academic and experiential streams, potential employers would find DMI PDM participants refreshingly ready for careers in development management across agriculture and agribusiness value chains; sustainable livelihoods; food and nutrition security; health and sanitation; basic education; governance and enterprise leadership and related areas.
Prof. Hemnath Rao Hanumankar
DEAN’S MESSAGE
Since its inception in year 2014 as a High Performing Knowledge Institution (HPKI), Development Management Institute (DMI) has been able to create an exquisite niche among the management institutions in the country. With increasing focus
on sustainable development, demand for professionals who can imbibe and embrace the ‘ethos of development’ and use them for the organisations’ competitive advantage, is multiplying. Post Graduate Programme in Development Management (PDM), the flagship programme of the institute, is aimed to inculcate similar ethos among its graduates.
PDM has a unique programme design and is anchored by a team of adroit faculty and working professionals from industries and development organisations. It provides participants with a robust understanding of concepts of development, its various tools and strategies, and its implications for society on the whole. The uniqueness of the course is its well-crafted Experiential Learning components in which participants spend more than 26 weeks, in actual field conditions to gain hands-on experiences of development realities under the able guidance of experts. Interactive Learning components includes courses on Marketing, Human Resource Management, Operations Management, Strategy, Finance and other related subjects, that are taught with development orientation. The course aims at grooming socially responsible, sensitive, committed and competent professionals for meeting future challenges.
I thank our recruiting organizations who have demonstrated continuous faith in us over the years. I take this opportunity to invite them and new organizations to be our recruiting partners. Please join us during our Placement – 2019.
Looking forward to welcome you!

PLACEMENT COORDINATOR’S
MESSAGE
There has been tectonic shift in the development narrative in the last few decades — from the “top-down approaches of technology-driven capital accumulated growth” to “emphasising local agents in bringing about a positive change from
the grassroots through participatory and non-directive methodologies”. Against this backdrop, the PDM programme at DMI primarily focuses on imparting competencies necessary for participatory governance and management of resources, enterprises, institutions and interventions by incorporating the comparative statics- the status quo of development, and comparative dynamics- the process of decay and development. The PDM curriculum follows the critical processes of integral learning encompassing reflective dialoguing, trans-disciplinary learning approaches and conscientisation resulting in critical thinking and analysis. The programme design, sui generis of its kind, consisting of mutually reinforcing Interactive Learning(IL) classroom sessions of 60 weeks spread over five terms and three Experiential Learning(EL) interspersed at regular intervals of 26 weeks. The five IL terms are meant to expose PDM participants to concepts and theories for developing their analytical, creative and design thinking skills, and thereby enhancing their knowledge and enquiry. The three EL segments involve an exposure of the participants to contextual development realities, and offer them opportunities for first-hand experience in understanding of and working for sustainable development through Development Immersion, Enterprise Learning and Management Internship.
Looking forward to welcome you at DMI.
Prof. Surya Bhushan
PDM COORDINATOR’S
MESSAGE
DMI is a unique institution that offers a niche programme namely ‘Post – Graduate Programme in Development Management (PDM)’. DMI through its unique andragogical processes has been able to create a cadre of Development
Management professionals to take the mission of the Institute forward, since 2014. The participants of the programme are well-equipped with requisite knowledge, skills and attitude to serve as agents of change in the development process.
DMI has received continuous support and encouragement from its recruiting partners during the placements season of previous three batches. Campus Placement 2019 ORIGIN AND
MISSIONTwenty two participants of the fourth batch of the two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Development Management (PDM 2017-19) would be graduating from DMI on April 18, 2019 and entering the professional world as development managers. DMI warmly invites Organisations with development orientation to participate in the campus placement process 2019 which will present to them twenty two (22) motivated and committed Development Management professionals.
The PDM programme is designed as a significant activity of DMI to realise its mission i.e. ‘To empower and usher in participatory governance and management of institutions, enterprises and resources for enhancing livelihoods and generating sustainable development’. DMI strongly believes in the process of Integral Learning, Professionalization, Trans disciplinary Research and Conscientisation and is constantly focussing on its four core values viz. Excellence, Innovation, Integrity and Participation.
The two year programme transforms the PDM participants into strong and committed Development Management professionals who can take up any challenging role in the development sector. We believe that you would find suitable candidate(s) meeting the talent requirements of your organisation.
To empower and usher in participatory governance and management of institutions, enterprises and resources for enhancing livelihoods
and generating sustainable development
Development Management Institute (DMI) was set up on February 13, 2014 pursuant to a desire of the Government of Bihar to establish a High Performing Knowledge Institution (HPKI). DMI believes that the livelihoods of small producers and marginalised people can be enhanced by organising them to form member participation based, democratically governed institutions that leverage the strengths of collectives and build enduring partnerships with professionals for reaping the benefits of technology and market integration. Inspired by and recognising the growing need for Development Management Professionals, the Government of Bihar took the initiative to establish DMI as an autonomous institution. The rationale of DMI is best captured in its mission:

Development Management Education : A Holistic Learning
Programmes and Activities
There is an urgent need for striking an optimal balance between societal and individual orientation through a synergetic alliance among the multiple stakeholders. DMI aims at meeting this dire need by developing managerial and leadership competencies through the processes of integral learning, professionalisation, trans-disciplinary research, and conscientisation, as explained below:
Competencies Enhancement Programmes (CEPs)Competencies Enhancement Programmes (CEPs) constitute another important activity of the Institute for realisation of its mission and vision, and are of two categories.
The first category of programmes are organisation-specific/ client-specific, and are designed and delivered as per the special requirements of individual organisations for their promoters, members, employees, and others identified by the organisations.
The second category of programmes are designed by the faculty of DMI, based on their interests and initiative to meet the needs of organisations associated with DMI. Such open programmes are communicated in advance to help the organisations sponsor the people to participate in them.
The CEPs range in duration from a few days to a few weeks, depending upon their scope, and may be conducted in-house at DMI or at a venue chosen by its client organisation. The learning and experiences gained during the CEPs are ploughed back in classrooms by the faculty members.
Collaborative Action Research and Education (CARE) Centres DMI is establishing three Collaborative Action Research and Education (CARE) Centres to serve as hubs for innovation and incubation. The broad activities of the centres revolve around:
• Knowledge management including co-creation, and establishing eco-system for propagation of best practices;
• Life-Cycle management guidance and support for institutions, programmes, and projects;
• Multi-stakeholder Interactive Learning; Collaborative Action Research; and Evidence-based Policy Advocacy; and
• Certificate courses in collaboration with leading academic/ research institutions.
Well-being and Livelihoods The activities of this centre will revolve broadly around themes like participatory governance and management of natural resources; primary health care, child nutrition
and protection; drinking water and sanitation; access to education; skills for wage and self-employment; access to financial and information services; and enhancing productivity of farm and non-farm activities.
Collectives and Commons
The centre envisages conducting value chain scoping studies for collective enterprises at multiple levels for significantly enhancing the livelihoods of the poor and marginalised. The broad themes proposed to be pursued at this centre are: Participatory governance and management of collective enterprises; promotion of structures for significant value addition and market Integration to ensure sustainability.
Leadership and Governance
The Centre for Leadership and Governance aims at enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of governance systems and structures; Increasing citizen participation and collaboration; Reducing information asymmetry; and transparent and accountable implementation. The centre plans to impart leadership and governance competencies for firmly establishing participatory governance and management practices at multiple levels.
Integral learning aims to leverage various forms of knowledge such as conceptual knowledge, experience knowledge, factual and procedural knowledge, and propositional knowledge to evolve a coherent world view and embraces the 4D cycle consisting of Dream, Discovery, Design, and Doing phases of Appreciative Inquiry. This encompasses both tacit and explicit knowledge.
Trans-disciplinary research connotes a strategy that transcends many disciplinary boundaries to create a holistic approach. It applies to efforts focussed on problems that transcend the boundaries of two or more disciplines and helps comprehend the ever-growing complexities of an inter-dependent world. This also involves self-transcendence and ever widening inclusive perspectives.
Professionalisation is the social process by which any trade or occupation transforms itself into a true ‘profession of the highest integrity and competence’. Professionalisation demands inculcating academic qualifications; expert and specialised knowledge in the field; excellent practical and literary skills; high quality work output; high standard of professional ethics; efficient work habits, and motivation to working independently.
Conscientisation means an awakening of consciousness – a change in a person involving critical awareness of his or her own identity and situation in nature and in society; the capacity to analyse causes and consequences; and to act logically and reflectively so as to transform reality. Praxis, or cycles of reflection-action, as Freire calls, are essential to this process leading to spiral learning

Academic EventsDMI organises several workshops, symposia, seminars, and similar events, on a regular basis, around variety of topics and issues relevant to its mission. The academic events are attended by leading academics, practising Development Management professionals, and thought leaders in the arena of Development.
Action Research Projects and PublicationsDMI is engaged in several action research projects, supported by its consulting activities that it provides to its client organisations. Apart from helping the clients in solving their critical managerial and organisational issues, the consulting activities provide an opportunity to DMI faculty in appreciating nuances of issues in management discipline, while documenting cases, research articles, and other publications based on them. These cases and research articles are use as reading material in PDM and CEPs.
Post-Graduate Programme in Development ManagementThe pioneering activity of DMI is its two-year full-time Post-graduate Programme in Development Management (PDM) approved by AICTE. It aims at preparing its graduates to achieve:
• Personal growth by widening perspectives through interactive learning from perspective-building, foundational, functional, and integrative courses, and enriched by learning by doing and reflective dialoguing process; and
• Transformation into Development Management Professionals by exposure to contextual realities during immersion, enterprise learning, and apprenticeship modules, mediated by experiential learning from first-hand living and working in situ.
The PDM curriculum primarily focuses on imparting competencies necessary for participatory governance and management of resources, enterprises, institutions, and interventions. The curriculum is a fine mix of mutually reinforcing classroom learning and hands-on experiential through a network of diverse institutional partners of DMI. DMI focuses on praxis-oriented interactive learning through a faculty team of career academics, practising professionals, and practitioner-turned academics endowed with domain expertise and experience.
