The Life & Times of the Great Farini: William Leonard Hunt of Port Hope Follow the extraordinary life of William Leonard Hunt who was born and raised in Canton, North of Port Hope, and known publicly as the Great Farini. A consummate showman, Hunt was known originally as a high wire aerialist, having walked over the Niagara Gorge on a tightrope. As the leader of the Flying Farini’s, he was the mastermind behind “Lulu” the female gymnast and the world’s first human cannonball act. He captured the world’s imagination by exhibiting human freaks and oddities. As an innovator, he patented the folding theatre seat, the modern parachute and the rollerboat. As an explorer, he claimed to have found the Lost City of Kalahari in Africa. On this tour, see his homestead in Canton and visit the site where he walked over the Ganaraska River on a tightrope in Port Hope, as well as see where he spent his retirement years and his gravesite. Eat lunch at the Railside Restaurant in Port Hope or Arthur’s Restaurant at the Best Western in Cobourg. Time: Spring, Summer and Fall 24. The Life & Times of Catharine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie: Canadian Pioneer Women and Authors Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill are two of Canada’s most important 19th Century writers. In 1832, they immigrated with their poor Scottish husbands to Canada, landing in Cobourg and settling for a time in Northumberland County. Here, despite poverty, political unrest and overwhelming hardships, they recorded and interpreted their experiences as pioneers: Catharine’s The Backwoods of Canada, and Canadian Crusoe's and Suzanna Moodie’s Roughing It in the Bush. These pioneer authors gave us an understanding of what life was like for them and their families during this turbulent time in Canadian history. Here, Catharine wrote Canada’s first coffee table book, Canadian Wildflowers. She concluded her long life in the Lakefield area while Suzanna’s family chose to escape the hard life in the bush and live their remaining years in Belleville. Commence the tour at their landing site on the Cobourg Wharf. Later, tour St. Peter’s Anglican Church on King Street., where you learn of the influence that the Family Compact had on the developing colony, the resultant Rebellion of 1837 and the enormous impact that the rebellion had on the lives of these authors. Next, visit the site of Melsetter in Hamilton Township, where you hear excerpts from Suzanna Moodie’s book, Roughing it in

the Bush which describes many of her devious but hilarious neighbours. In the afternoon, visit the three home sites made famous by Catharine Parr Traill. First, see the site of Wolf Tower, overlooking scenic Rice Lake. It is here that Catharine Parr Traill explored the Rice Lake Plains with her children, (the Valley of the Big Stone) and regained her health. Next stop is Mt Ararat, also overlooking scenic

Rice Lake, another home of Catherine Parr Traill. It was here that she wrote Canadian Crusoe's. This children’s novel is considered to be one of the finest descriptions of our pristine wilderness in the 1840’s. Learn about its unique vegetation and hear her description of this landmark. Visit the cemetery of St. George’s Anglican Church at Gore’s Landing where her young grandson, Henry Strickland Atwood, is buried. Also, visit the site of Oaklands where Mrs. Traill wrote The Female Immigrant’s Guide and other works. If time permits, go to see the site of the collapsed bridge of the Cobourg-Peterborough Railroad at Harwood, on the Southern Shore of Rice Lake. 25. Three Extraordinary Men from Port Hope Explore the lives and the legacy of three outstanding men from the Port Hope area: The Rt Hon. Vincent Massey, the Great Farini (William Leonard Hunt) and Charles Trick Currelly. Each left their mark on Canada’s heritage. Vincent Massey was Canada’s first Canadian-born Governor General. Hear about his privileged childhood and his diplomatic career before and during WWII in Washington and London at a crucial time in Canada’s history. Learn about his personal philanthropy and his tireless promotion of the Canadian Arts. As the Governor General, he was responsible for many of the institutions which support Canadian artistic endeavors today. While in Port Hope, visit the Massey gravesite at St.Mark’s Anglican Church and see the entranceway to his Batterwood Estate in Canton where he entertained the Queen. In Port Hope, trace the life of one of Canada’s greatest figures in Canadian show business, Signor Guillermo Antonia Farini, aka, William Leonard Hunt. See the farm on the Fourth Line where he cultivated his incredible talent as a young tight rope walker and see the location over the Ganaraska River where he amazed the crowds with his high-wire acts. As well as repeatedly walking over the Niagara Gorge, we learn that he entertained in America, where he claimed to be a Union spy. As a showman, he became a ‘household name’ in Europe, especially in Great Britain where he performed with ‘freaks of nature’, who fueled people’s fears and curiosity. His inventions ranged from the Human Cannonball Act to folding theatre seats. Discover his amazing talents as a botanist, painter, linguist and African explorer. He is buried in Port Hope’s Union Cemetery. Finally, explore the life of Charles Trick Currelly, an outstanding archaeologist, founder and first Director of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Hear how he was able to discover, and then collect, priceless treasures in China, Crete, Syria, and Egypt, and dinosaur bones in Alberta. Learn how his discoveries as an Egyptologist contributed to our modern understanding of life through the various Egyptian dynasties. See that Currelly was a visionary museum builder that made the ROM a world class institution. In Canton, see the home where he spent his retirement and his remarkable legacy to the area. Conclude the tour by visiting the Canton United Church and the Hawkins Cemetery where the Professor and his family are buried. Cobourg’s Most Famous People Learn about the lives of some of Cobourg’s most influential and famous citizens from the past: Marie Dressler, Sir Sanford Fleming, Bishop Alexander Bethune, Egerton Ryerson, James Cockburn, the artist Paul Kane, and James Crossen. Marie Dressler was Cobourg-born and an Academy Award winning actress of Broadway and Hollywood. See a wax re-creation from her movie ‘Min and Bill’ at the Marie Dressler House and visit St. Peter’s Anglican Church where her father was the organist and where young Marie honed her acting skills. Also at St. Peter’s, learn about the life of Bishop Alexander Bethune, Rector for 40 years, a staunch member of the Family Compact and 2nd Bishop of Toronto. Learn how Bethune and this ‘high’ Anglican Church influenced life in the colony prior to Confederation. See the Wesleyan Methodist Church (now Trinity United) and the classic revival Victoria College which was founded by Egerton Ryerson. Learn about this Renaissance man, the architect of Ontario’s Educational System and his promotion of Methodism. Ryerson’s Victoria College was one of the earliest degree granting universities in Canada and a founding College of the University of Toronto. On King St., see where Sir Sanford Fleming designed Canada's first postal stamp and where he honed his surveying skills to map the town. He would later become the chief surveyor for the C.P.R. and the inventor of the world’s standard time. In Cobourg’s finest building, Victoria Hall, we visit the James Cockburn Room, which was the law office of our Father of Confederation. Mr. Cockburn worked tirelessly to bring the Maritime Provinces into Confederation. As our M.P., he was the first Speaker of the House of Commons. See the beautiful homes on George Street, especially noting the homes built by James Crossen who owned the Cobourg Car Manufacturing Company. In its day, it was the largest manufacturer of railway cars in Canada, producing a variety of railway stock from Pullman coaches to luxury railway cars for the Governor General and mining cars. There is an opportunity to visit the Northumberland Art Gallery to see several paintings of Paul Kane and hear the Director describe his connection to Cobourg. Discover the interesting life stories behind some of the tombstones such as the fur trader, Robert Henry; the Arctic explorer, Major Lachlan Burwash; Chief Justice John Douglas Armour; a pioneer settler, a military leader, a magistrate and a politician, Zaccheus Burnham; and a staunch member of the Family Compact, Bishop Alexander Bethune. Ganaraska Conservation Eco-tour Each season provides different views of species at the Ganaraska Millennium Conservation Area north of Port Hope. In the spring, marsh marigolds cast a golden glow on the forest floor and rainbow trout are making their way up the Ganaraska River to their spawning grounds. The shade from the willows, ash and maples provides relief from the lazy days of summer. Orange and yellow jewel weed and moneywort along the trail provide hiding ground for the cicadas that sing their buzzing trill. Fall provides a beautiful pallet of colours from the various warblers and the glint of red from the spawning Coho and Chinook salmon in the river. Further upstream, wander along the path of Garden Hill Conservation area and its mixed forest. Within the home, see how this wealthy family lived with its commodious kitchen and bake ovens, servant’s quarters, children’s bedroom, the formal parlour and Barnum's office. Nearby, visit the Cuttle Cottage Lavender Farm and see the beautiful colours produced by this fragrant flower, and then have an opportunity to shop in the Lavender Store. Stroll through the Nawautin Nature Sanctuary, a lush oasis surrounding ponds and a stream on the shore of Lake Ontario. Lunch is located at the Grafton Village Inn. 30. Alderville First Nation Pow Wow Experience and celebrate the Anishinabeg (Native) culture at the Annual Alderville Pow Wow. The day features traditional dancing, drumming, ceremonies and native crafts. Native food is available or lunch may be purchased at the Victoria Inn in Gore’s Landing. In Alderville, visit the largest Native War Memorial in Canada as well as the unique Black Oak Savanna (grasslands). At the Alderville Native Craft Store, shop and hear about the production of wild rice. Last stop is Smoke’s Fine Art Gallery which has native art and natural products from across Canada, from jewelry and books to dream catchers and paintings. Time: The Alderville Pow Wow is usually held during the last weekend in July 31. Annual Warkworth Lilac Festival Explore the fascinating and fragrant world of lilacs. Learn about lilac propagation, lilac history and the various varieties of this aromatic flower. In Warkworth, enjoy the opportunity to stroll the scenic Millennium Trail along the shores of Cold Creek. Here you can see over 70 varieties of lilacs in a series of plantings. Visit the Lilac Gift Shop, see lilac floral displays and learn gardening tips from a Master Gardener. There is time to shop at the boutique stores along Main Street including free samples of shortbread cookies from the award-winning Sprucewood Cookie Factory. Another alternative is to hear the musical groups and buskers along the same street. Conclude the day by visiting Glover’s Farm Market to buy crafts, fresh cheese, and seasonal vegetables such as fresh asparagus and locally grown hydroponic tomatoes. Time: End of May week-long festival 32. The Shelter Valley Folk Festival This is a family weekend of music, juried art, wellness, sustainable living and fine harvest foods. Located on the Henkel Family Lavender Farm in the heart of Northumberland County, this event is listed as one of Canada's top ten festivals. It features new artists who perform in four informal, but separate venues on the farm. The Festival invites national and international folk singers to perform and give workshops. Bring your lawn chairs, sunscreen, hats, warm clothes, a lawn chair or blanket, and refillable bottles or cups for water. Quality food is available from the vendors on site. Time: Saturday of the Labour Day weekend in September

33. Cobourg Waterfront Festival Come spend the weekend at the annual Cobourg Waterfront Festival. This is one of Canada’s best festivals with activities to suit all tastes and ages. Situated on the north end of the Cobourg Heritage Harbour, under four colourful marquees from the Rotary Club, one finds a large display of juried, high quality arts and crafts. These artisans represent the best in their medium; they are painters, sculptors, weavers, custom jewelry designers, potters, ceramists, woodcarvers, photographers, metal and stained glass creators and clothing designers. Equally appealing is the art work for sale in the Lion’s Club Tents. On the perimeter of Victoria Park is the International Marketplace which sells an eclectic mix of exotic imports, and collectables from around the world. Rest a while in the licensed refreshment tent, enjoy a bite to eat under a shady tree or listen to the free music from the band shell. Children may frolic on the beach or in the shallow water of Lake Ontario or enjoy the Midway rides. Food may be purchased from local vendors on site or the group may eat locally at the Best Western Inn, the Old Mill Restaurant or the Woodlawn Inn. Time: Canada Day weekend 34. A Rural Ramble – Herma’s Fine Foods, the Linwood Trout Farm & Grow Tasty with Lavender At Herma’s, we will browse gourmet products for the cook, baker, entertainer and wine and food lover in all of us. Here, we have the time to sample some of their artisanal cheeses and other products plus shop for their fine foods, exotic desserts and gift baskets. Later, at the Linwood Trout Farm, we will have the opportunity to see how speckled and rainbow trout are raised indoors plus have an opportunity to hand feed them in their outdoor pools. Our last visit is to Grow Tasty, a family farm which grows certified organic edible plants. There are 400 varieties of plants from which to choose; herbs, edible flowers, vegetable starts, vine berries and fruits in addition to many heirloom varieties. This farm specializes in 40 varieties of lavender. Lunch is served overlooking Rice Lake at the Victoria Inn in Gore’s Landing. Some walking required. Time: Herma’s and the Linwood Trout Farm anytime, Grow Tasty Nursery mid-May to end of June, Lavender mid-June to mid-August. 35. Scenic Rice Lake - Artists, Artisans & Authors plus a Lady Arctic Explorer Overlooking scenic Rice Lake, we discover the lives of several extraordinary Canadians who lived in or near Gore’s Landing, which is a mecca for artists, writers and boat builders. Gerald Hayward was a renowned painter of miniatures of royalty and aristocrats in Europe and mighty industrialists and presidents in America. J.D. Kelly grew up in Gore’s Landing and is considered to be one of Canada’s finest historical artists. Archibald Lampman Jr. spent his youth here and has been called, ‘Canada’s finest nature poet’. Daniel Herald produced his popular double-planked, Rice Lake Canoes in this Village. The stage coach king, William Weller, helped to provide coach, steamer and later railroad transportation to the Peterborough area. We pay a visit and tour St. George’s Anglican Church which overlooks scenic Rice Lake and contains the graves of several noteworthy citizens. And lastly, we reveal the life of Mina Hubbard, who was the first white woman to explore the wild woods of Labrador in order to uphold her family’s honour. Lunch is served at the former summer home of Gerald Hayward, the Victoria Inn, with a spectacular view of Rice Lake.

36. Yesterday’s Treasures – Antiquing and a Historic Home in Port Hope Famous for its best-preserved main street in Ontario, Port Hope is known for its antique stores clustered around its main street, Walton St. Here you will find all things antique: jewelry, books, art, clothes, furniture and even maps. The town is also known for its beautiful, historic homes. While here we tour Penstowe B&B, an elegant upscale 1890s Queen Anne Revival home, built for the founder of Canada Trust. This home contains a considerable number of antiques and each bedroom is decorated with a different theme. Lunch is located at either the Railside Restaurant with its Mediterranean décor or the historic Woodlawn Inn, Cobourg.

37. “Days Gone By” – The Annual Port Hope Fair This family-friendly annual fair celebrates the rural life of long ago. There are various demonstrations of rural life such as sheep dog trials, milking, spinning, woodworking, blacksmithing and soapstone carving. You can watch the 4-H members as they proudly show their calves or see dairy cattle being judged. For children, there is face painting, a petting zoo, pony rides and a midway. There are horse-drawing competitions, wagon rides and draft horse demonstrations. You’ll find many judged exhibits which range from foods such as honey, maple syrup, canned and fresh fruits and vegetables to handicrafts such as needlework, fiber art and quilting. There is even a scarecrow competition. The contemporary exhibits include local photography, natural living and health and wellness.

38. Nuevo Norte Alpaca Farm and “Pick Your Own Apples” at Pieter’s Appleyard Along the Apple Route, near Colborne, visit the Neuvo Norte Alpaca Farm. Learn about the care of these gentle creatures, their habits and their selective breeding program and talk to their herders. Have an

opportunity to purchase articles of clothing made with their incredibly soft wool. Nearby is the Pieter’s Appleyard Orchard owned and operated by the Madamba Family. Hear the owner talk about her seasonal duties as an orchardist. Participate in an optional old fashioned hay-wagon wagon ride through the orchard (steps are provided). You have the opportunity to pick your own apples to take home. The best time to pick is mid-September to mid-October; however, other fruit is available on this farm but pre-picked by the owners. A variety of peaches are available from late July to early August. Several types of pears and early

apples are available from the first week of September. An additional option would be to visit Hoselton Studios in Colborne, famous for their aluminum sculptures. Lunch would be at the Grafton Village Inn, a former stage-coach road house.

39. Oak Hills Prairie Farm and Arboretum This 101 acre farm demonstrates the range of native trees, shrubs and grasses which can be grown in Southern Ontario. It has a commanding view of Rice Lake and consists of a variety of habitats. Almost three acres are devoted to growing a tallgrass prairie, notably big bluestem grass, Indian grass, switch grass, Canadian wild rye, bergamot, black-eyed Susan and thimble weed. This area was once famous for its extensive prairie vegetation but now it exists only in small pockets. Many unusual North American tree species can be found such as butternut, hickory, witch hazel and rock elm. A few Carolinian species which are normally found only in southwestern Ontario such as cucumber magnolia and blue ash can be identified as well. Extensive trails

lead one through the prairie grassland, a former apple orchard and an open field where a plantation of young white pine, white and burr oak, walnut, white spruce and tamarack can be seen. Also, while here, learn about the problem of invasive species such as the European buckthorn. The owner, Dr. John Oyston, was Vice President of the North American Plant Society in 2013. While here, learn about the writing of the Literary Pioneer, Catharine Parr Traill, who wrote extensively about the pioneer grasses, shrubs and trees in this region during the 19th Century. In her own words, hear the description of the local vegetation and see some of the family drawings from her famous book, ‘Canadian Wildflowers’. Enjoy lunch at the Victoria Inn, in Gore’s Landing, overlooking scenic Rice Lake. 40. Garden Tours of Northumberland County There are two separate garden tours that can be assembled for you with one in the Port Hope area featuring 6 gardens from which to choose. Lunch can be in Port Hope or Cobourg or on Rice Lake at the Victoria Inn. The second location is in the Warkworth/Campbellford area with 5 gardens from which to choose. Lunch can be a church lunch in Warkworth or at Chubby’s Restaurant in Campbellford. All gardens have been visited and personally selected so a customized itinerary can easily be built. Some sites offer tours of their homes as well as refreshments. 41. “Grape Expectations” – The Wineries of Prince Edward County Tasting and purchasing the award-winning wines of Prince Edward County will be the talk of the day. Visit any three of the following wineries: Casa Dea Estates, Norman Hardie, The Grange, RoseHall Run and

Sandbanks Winery. Choose additional attractions near the wineries as well: Prince Edward County Lavender Farm (best time for blooms from late June to mid-July), Lakeshore Farm Market (May to October), shopping for arts and crafts in Bloomfield (all year), Campbell’s Orchard (May to October), 69 Gilead Distillery (all year). Enjoy lunch at either the Huff Estates Winery or the Waring House.

42. Shopping and more in Prince Edward County Spend a day exploring the attractions of Prince Edward County. Enjoy shopping for lavender products and see acres of both French and English lavender growing. Shop for arts and crafts in the village of Bloomfield and explore different varieties of award-winning cheeses at the Black Creek Cheese Factory. Also, stop for a tasting at the Waupoos Winery, the Black Prince Winery or the Prince Edward County Cidery. An additional stop may be made at the Lakeshore Farm Market near Wellington. At Curle’s Maple Products, since 1862, see the old and modern methods used to produce maple syrup, sugar and butter. Sample their tasty products and purchase some. Ensure that you see their old schoolhouse model and their Maple Museum. At the Twoloom Alpaca Farm, learn how alpacas are bred for their fine fleece and acquire alpaca products. Eliakim Barnum of Barnum House fame and hear about his vision for the development of Grafton. In Colborne, see the original home of Joseph Keeler, founder of Colborne. In Brighton, visit the Loyalist home of the Proctor family with its formal living and dining rooms and many antique furnishings. 47. Alderville Black Oak Savanna Ecology Experience - An Authentic Ojibway Experience With local guide, Peter Brotherhood, discover First Nation Ojibway Culture at the Gathering Place in Alderville. You will be welcomed by an Ojibway drumming circle.

Learn from the Ojibway speakers as they share their culture, discussing such topics as native art, environmental issues, stereotypes of First Nations, and their spiritual connection to all things. In the 1830’s, learn about the Irish assassin, James Dempsey, whose body washed up on the property of his intended victim, James Calcutt. A mystery building on the property, formerly known as the Barracks, and now the Sifton-Cook Heritage Centre will highlight the history of Cobourg with an operating model of the Cobourg to Peterborough Railroad plus a Workman’s Cottage. From the 1860’s, we learn about Dr. William King who murdered his wife and was publically executed in Cobourg, viewing his likeness over the portal of Victoria Hall. While here, we learn about the baffling ‘green lady’ who is reputed to be the ghost of Lena Field Fisher, a major influence in the restoration of Victoria Hall in the 1970’s. Enjoy a buffet lunch at the historic Woodlawn Inn, the original home of Ebenezer Perry.

49. Three Unique Home Gardens for 2015 Join local guide, Peter Brotherhood as we explore three personal gardens in Northumberland County. Near Lake Ontario in Cobourg, our first garden proves what can be grown on a small lot with a minimum of grass and a maximum number of flowers. Our second garden is known for its 1300 varieties of hostas, of which 300-400 are for sale! Also, while here see numerous varieties of shrubs and trees, from dogwoods to

magnolias, variegated oaks to metasequoias. Our aptly named, third garden surrounds the Woodland Gardens B&B. This two acre property has enchanting paths through the woods and plenty of benches to appreciate the gardens and whimsical ornaments. To conclude, we will be served traditional Finnish Specialty refreshments: cakes, cookies, sweet breads and pancakes. Enjoy lunch at either the Woodlawn Inn or the Victoria Inn. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
