MCS WT0118/01Small Wind Turbines
The Ampair 20kW
Annual Energy Production (AEP)
Our 20kW turbine, the largest of the Ampair range, combines practical and robust engineering with a sleek look. The turbine itself is a three blade, up-wind machine with a blade pitch mechanism, auto furl and a dump load to manage power production and protect the turbine in extreme weather. Other design considerations include a direct drive generator to minimise the number of moving parts and high specification components to ensure longevity.
The Ampair 20kW has been independently tested under the UK’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and emerges as a high yielding machine. The graph below depicts the annual energy production (AEP) in relation to the annual average wind speed at the turbine head.

‘As energy prices continue to rise well above the rate of inflation, the cost savings potential of a small wind turbine becomes ever more valuable’

Noise Profile
The Ampair 20kW has the following noise profile:
• 45dB(A) at 100m*
• 40dB(A) at 178m*
• Noise Slope: 1.47 dB/m/s (change in sound levels per m/s change in wind speed)*
*Data from MCS Summary Reports, sound power levels at the turbine hub as measured in an 8m/s wind.
The Ampair 20kW has a cut in speed of 2.7m/s. Easy start-up is achieved by the pitch mechanism, which automatically pitches the blades at the optimum level to be driven by the wind.
This same pitch mechanism then operates as a safety feature in high winds, protecting the turbine from over production or over-speeding.
As wind speed increases to excess levels, the blades will begin to pitch out of the wind slightly, reducing their efficiency and slowing the rotor to maintain the power production at the rated power. This will not only ensure a long product lifespan but when accompanied with other protection features such as dump loading & auto-furling, guarantees safe and lasting power generation.
Turbine Profile
• 3 bladed rotor, 10.2m diameter
• Permanent magnet generator
• Direct drive
• Upwind orientation, passive yaw
• Power management: passive blade pitch, auto furl mechanism and dump load with electro-magnetic brake
• 840kg turbine head weight
• Suitable for 240V grid tie or stand alone
• 2.7 m/s cut in wind speed
design
Rotor The rotor has a swept area of 81.67m2.
A passive pitching mechanism adjusts
blade orientation to regulate rotor
speed in response to wind conditions.
The pitching mechanism ensures the
blades remain in balance during the
process.
Blades
Made from a carbon/glass fibre compos-
ite, the rotor blades are recognised as one
of the strongest and most durable type
available.
Paint OptionsChoose your colours. We offer
light grey, gloss white, off white
and light green. Blade sets can
also receive a gloss black finish. If
you want something extra we will
do our best to provide.
Nacelle
Bearings
Magnets
Seals
We use some of the worlds strongest Rare Earth
Magnets (Ne-Feb-Br) available; maximising power production capability.
Throughout the machine we
use high quality seals to
protect our bearings and
other components. The
generator itself is completely
sealed from the natural
environment, giving a long
trouble free turbine life span
even in the harshest
conditions.
We only use the highest quality branded bear-
ings. The bearings have been selected to last the
machine lifespan.
Yaw The turbine is mounted on bearings
allowing it to yaw freely in combination
with the tail rudder.
CoatingsAll main structural components are hot-dip galvanised or interzinc primed
for enhanced corrosion protection.
We are one of the few manufacturers who use
galvanised steel nacelles. This design means the
nacelle is extremely robust.
RudderIn normal wind conditions the rudder turns the turbine to face
into the wind. However as the tail boom is mounted slightly
off centre in high winds the rudder enables the furling action
which prevents over-speeding.
