•Today, the American Studies Program is facing
new challenges. There have been new globaldevelopments, and the role that the U.S. plays
on the world stage has shifted. On the otherhand, Indonesia has developed to become an
emerging industrial and democratic country.
•Moreover, Universitas Indonesia itself is now
pushing hard to make itself a world class
university
Facing New Challenges

•A new paradigm has been invented. The focus
of the program would remain the study of
American society and culture. Yet, there is also anurgent need to emphasize an Indonesian
perspective in the approach to the study, aclarification of the study of which aspects of
American society and culture would also benefit
Indonesians.
•A balance thus has to be struck and maintained
between these two equally important needs.
New Paradigm

•All these developments demand that theAmerican Studies Graduate Program at
Universitas Indonesia revitalizes itself.
•After proposing a new curriculum for the lastthree years, finally starting the new 2015-2016
semester, the Rector of Universitas Indonesia
approved the new curriculum and will put thestudy program under the newly proposed
Universitas Indonesia Graduate School of
Global and Strategic Studies.
