Childhood Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Kansas, the daughter of Edwin and Amy Earhart. At the age of three, she was sent to live with hergrandmother (her namesake), mainly because the oldwoman needed company and a distraction from thedeaths of her mother, her son, and her daughter-in-law, as well as the poor mental condition of herhusband Alfred. She liked their home in Atchison, Kansas, especiallyher large bedroom with views of the nearby river, nowa museum open to the public. 5. The grandparents (or grandmother) raised Ameliaduring her early childhood. She enjoyed her life with her grandparents:learning to read at five, and secure in a placewhere it seemed that almost everyone was family. But her grandmother was timid, and a worrier, and did not approve of Amelias tomboytendencies, so Amelia kept her pony-riding, tree-climbing, snow-sledding, and hunting activities toherself. Her parents were only 50 miles away, and shesummered with them, so she remained close tothem during these years. 6. Flight She took her first ride in an airplane in 1920. After herflight with barnstormer Frank Hawks, she said "Assoon as we left the ground, I knew I myself had to fly. Indeed, within a few days, she took her first flyinglesson, in a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny. Six months later, she bought her own airplane, ayellow Kinner Airster, that she dubbed "The Canary." Like Gabby Gabreski, she was not a naturally giftedpilot, but she persevered, built up her flying time, andeven broke the womans altitude record in 1922. 7. The mid-Twenties were difficult years for Amelia. Hermother finally divorced Edwin, thus ending that part ofAmelias family life. She studied at Columbia for a time, but lack of moneycompelled her to withdraw. She had a long-termengagement to one Sam Chapmen, but they nevermarried. She was active in aviation and social work, living inMedford, Massachusetts for a time. She flewwhenever she could, distributing free passes to acarnival on one occasion, and was active in Bostonaviation circles. 8. Amelia with her first bought airplane called Kinner Airster 9. Her Last Flight In 1937 Amelia Earhart attempted an around-the- world flight. Flying a custom-built Lockheed Model 10E Electra, equipped with extra-large gas tanks, she would follow a close to the Equator route, thus going one better than Wiley Posts northern, mid-latitude route. In her first effort, in March of 1937, she flew west, but a crash in Hawaii abruptly ended that trip. 10. Pictures of Lockheed Electra 10E 11. Amelia in Lockheed Electrascockpit 12.
