A superb narrative history of the Tudor dynasty THE TUDORSTHE COMPLETE STORY OF ENGLAND’S MOST NOTORIOUS DYNASTYHENRY VII TO HENRY VIIIG. J. MEYER

In 1485, young Henry Tudor, whose claim to the throne was so weak as to be almost laughable, crossed the English Channel from France at the head of a ragtag little army and took the crown from the family that had ruled England for almost four hundred years. Half a century later his son, Henry VIII, desperate to rid himself of his rst wife in order to marry a second, launched a reign of terror aimed at taking powers no previous monarch had even dreamed of possessing. In the process he plunged his kingdom into generations of division and disorder, creating a legacy of blood and betrayal that would blight the lives of his children and the destiny of his country. The Tudors weaves together all the sinners and saints, the tragedies and triumphs, the high dreams and dark crimes, that reveal the Tudor era to be, in its enthralling, notorious truth, as momentous and as fascinating as the ctions audiences have come to love.

MARGARET BEAUFORT MOTHER OF THE TUDOR DYNASTYELIZABETH NORTON

• First-ever biography of Lady Margaret Beaufort

• Author’s last book Catherine Parr received excellent reviews: ‘Scintillating’ THE FINANCIAL TIMES; ‘Norton cuts an admirably clear path through tangled Tudor intrigues.’ JENNY UGLOW

Born in the midst of the Wars of the Roses, Margaret Beaufort became the greatest heiress of her time. She survived a turbulent life, marrying four times and enduring imprisonment before passing her claim to the crown of England to her son, Henry VII, the rst of the Tudor monarchs. Margaret’s royal blood placed her on the fringes of the Lancastrian royal dynasty. After divorcing her rst husband at the age of ten, she married the king’s half-brother, Edmund Tudor, becoming a widow and bearing her only child, the future Henry VII, before her fourteenth birthday. Margaret was always passionately devoted to the interests of her son who claimed the throne through her. She embroiled herself in both treason and conspiracy as she sought to promote his claims, allying herself with the Yorkist Queen, Elizabeth Woodville, in an attempt to depose Richard III. She was imprisoned by Richard and her lands con scated, but she continued to work on her son’s behalf, ultimately persuading her fourth husband, the powerful Lord Stanley, to abandon the king in favour of Henry on the eve of the decisive Battle of Bosworth. It was Lord Stanley himself who placed the crown on Henry’s head on the battle eld. Henry VII gave his mother unparalleled prominence during his reign. She established herself as an independent woman and ended her life as regent of England, ruling on behalf of her

seventeen-year-old grandson, Henry VIII.

Elizabeth Norton gained her rst degree from the University of Cambridge, and her Masters from the University of Oxford. She is the author of six books on the Tudors and is currently writing a biography of Henry VIII’s mistress, Bessie Blount, also for Amberley. She lives in Kingston upon Thames.

A highly emotive collection of rst-hand accounts of the struggle to resist Chinese oppression in Tibet

In 1949, the People’s Liberation Army of China sent troops into Tibet. At rst, Chinese soldiers behaved respectfully towards the local people, distributing clothes, blankets, tools, medicine and even money. Soon, however, it became clear that a new era in Tibetan history had begun, namely one of oppression, atrocities and ... resistance. Tibet’s Forgotten Heroes is a unique historical document on Tibetan resistance to Chinese oppression. For the very rst time since the events, forty-eight stories by Tibetan warriors involved in the struggle for freedom are given unabridged, creating a vivid and emotional spectrum of events in Tibet since 1949. Birgit van de Wijer has been careful to provide an honest transcription of the interviews, acting only as a ‘service hatch’. The rst-hand interviews as well as the translation into English were conducted by native Tibetans. The book is the result of two years’ work with dozens of Tibetans involved.

Birgit van de Wijer was born in Holland in 1960. She has an MA in Archaeology and a BA in Oriental Studies at the Catholic University Leuven (KU Leuven). She also has a degree in Marketing & Advertising at the Ecole de Commerce Solvay in Brussels. Her former works include Child Exodus from Tibet (self-published, May 2006) and Escape to Freedom: The Dangerous Trek of Tibetan Youth (Paljor Publications).

During the eighteenth and early years of the nineteenth century, the red tide of British expansion had covered the entire Indian subcontinent, reaching the borders of the Punjab. There the great Sikh ruler Runjeet Singh rapidly developed his army to thwart any British advance north of the Sutlej river into his Kingdom. The First Anglo-Sikh War broke out in 1845; from the start it was marred by Victorian arrogance and bluster on the British side, and personal ambition, intrigue and treason in the Sikh camp. Five keenly fought contests ensued, including the great battle of Ferozeshah. With its ammunition spent, artillery destroyed and with no food and water, the British force found itself caught between two powerful Sikh armies. The Governor-General Sir Hardinge, accompanying the army, gave orders to burn all state papers in preparation for the worst; the fate of India would be decided that day. Amarpal Sidhu writes a balanced tale using numerous eyewitness accounts of the First Sikh War, a con ict characterised by treachery, su ering and incredible bravery on both sides. Over a hundred photographs and new scale maps show the campaign as never before.

Amarpal Sidhu was born in India in 1962, and moved to Britain when he was six. He now lives with his family in London. He has worked as a computer software engineer for over 20 years, but his passion lies in writing history. He has given up his old job to concentrate on his writing. His ambition is to write a series of books on the major battles and battle elds of the Mughal and British Empires in India. He is currently writing The Second Sikh War, also for Amberley publishing.

THE REAL DAD’S ARMYTHE STORY OF THE HOME GUARDNORMAN LONGMATE

FRONTSTALAG 142THE INTERNMENT DIARY OF AN ENGLISH LADYKATHERINE LACK

• Includes the ‘voices’ of members of the Home Guard

• Fabulously illustrated with over 100 contemporary photographs

The enduring popularity of the BBC TV series Dad’s Army has focused attention on one of the strangest and least military armies ever formed – the British Home Guard. What started as an improvised band of volunteers had grown by 1942 into a conscripted, disciplined and well-equipped force with a strength of nearly two million men. Norman Longmate, an ex-member of the Home Guard and an authority on wartime Britain, has collected together a wealth of hilarious anecdotes as well as all the unlikely facts to produce the rst popular history of the Home Guard to be written since the war.

Norman Longmate, ex-Private ‘F’ Company, 3rd Sussex Battalion, Home Guard, joined ‘Dad’s Army’ at the same age as the ctional character ‘Pike’, 17. To this day he contends that the much-loved sitcom was remarkably accurate in its portrayal of life in the Home Guard. After the war he read modern history at Worcester College, Oxford and went on to work as a journalist and radio producer of history documentaries. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has written more than twenty books, mainly on the Second World War. For this book, and many others, he made requests through regional newspapers for veterans to contact him with their memories. He was historical adviser on the hugely popular Channel 4 TV show, The 1940 House. He lives in London.

‘A fascinating history’

THE DAILY MAIL

‘Wonderful stories’THE DAILY MIRROR

In December 1940, as the coldest winter in living memory fastened its grip on war torn France, the Nazi conquerors rounded up nearly 5,000 people, mostly women and children, and sent them to an internment camp. Their destination, Frontstalag 142, was in the Besançon army barracks near the German border. There they remained for months in conditions so bad that many died of cold, food poisoning and disease. The internees had only one thing in common: they all held British papers. Wealthy expatriates, holiday-makers caught out by the speed of the Blitzkrieg, wives of First World War ‘tommies’, French nationals born in England – all were on the list. Among them were two English ladies, Miss Kathleen and Miss Fanny Twemlow – great aunts of the author. Aunt Kathleen soon succumbed to the terrible conditions, but was hospitalized and survived. Aunt Fan remained in the camps (she was sent to a camp in Vittel after Besançon) for a year until, aged sixty, she was released. The conditions in Frontstalag 142 are revealed here in all their harrowing detail, through Aunt Fan’s diary and the memoirs of some of the other survivors. Aunt Fan was an artist, and her sketches of camp life, many drawn secretly on tiny scraps of paper and kept in the family ever since, give a poignant insight into the hardships these women endured in this forgotten chapter of the war.

Katherine Lack studied applied biology at Oxford and since then has turned her attention to a variety of historical topics. She is currently based at Birmingham University, researching the social history of the industrial revolution.

SPOOKS: THE UNOFFICIAL HISTORY OF MI5 FROM M TO MISS X 1909-39THOMAS HENNESSEY & CLAIRE THOMAS

• Forget the ‘o cial’ history of MI5, here is the real story• ‘The rst general history of MI5 ... the de nitive and comprehensive history’ THES

The real history of MI5. ‘PO Box 500, London W2’ – the nondescript address from behind which one of the world’s most famous secret services hid: MI5. Drawing on previously secret sources, this book lifts the lid on Britain’s Security Service in its battle against German and Soviet espionage. It tells the sensational stories of the o cers and agents and the enemies they confronted, from MI5’s creation in 1909 under the direction of Vernon Kell, Britain’s rst spymaster. Building on the service’s wartime success, Maxwell Knight (‘M’), MI5’s charismatic and eccentric agent runner, penetrated Soviet and Fascist spy networks during the 1920s and 1930s. His agent, ‘Miss X’, was instrumental in breaking the Percy Glading spy ring run by the Soviets, while the beautiful Joan Miller and ‘Miss Z’ helped bring to justice Tyler Kent, who was passing information to the Axis powers.

SPOOKS: THE UNOFFICIAL HISTORY OF MI5 FROM AGENT ZIGZAG TO THE D-DAY DECEPTION 1939-45THOMAS HENNESSEY & CLAIRE THOMAS

During the Second World War, the Security Service, through brilliant o cers such as Guy Liddell, Dick White and the fearsome spy-breaker, ‘Tin-eye’ Stephens, commandant of MI5’s interrogation centre, Camp 020, successfully ran the Double Cross (XX) system. XX agents such as the dynamic, womanising petty criminal ZIGZAG, the suave TRICYCLE and the aptly named CARELESS laid the basis for Operation FORTITUDE in which MI5’s agents BRUTUS and GARBO were central to the success of the greatest deception in modern military history: convincing Hitler that the D-Day landings in Normandy were an elaborate diversion to the ‘real’ Allied landings at Calais. It was MI5’s nest hour.

Thomas Hennessey is Reader in History at Canterbury Christ Church University. He was an adviser to the award-winning BBC TV documentary Endgame in Ireland. The defence of Malta and its importance and contribution to the Allied e ort during the Second World War

CHURCHILL AND MALTA’S WAR 1939-1943DOUGLAS AUSTIN

During the rst four years of the Second World War, Churchill and his military advisers were constantly concerned with the defence and sustenance of Malta. From 11 June 1940, the island, only sixty miles from Italian and German air elds in Sicily, su ered intense and prolonged air attack, but Churchill refused to consider the abandonment of the island. He gave orders that every e ort be made to provide the supplies needed to maintain a base from which Rommel’s supply convoys to North Africa, and other enemy targets, could be attacked. Despite the hazards and severe losses, Malta pulled through and made a unique contribution to Allied victory in the Mediterranean. This was recognised in April 1942 when King George VI awarded the George Cross to the island and its people. In this deeply researched volume, the story of Malta’s heroic struggle is told through Churchill’s o cial Malta Papers. They are also supplemented by extracts from letters, diaries and memoirs which shed additional light on these dramatic events.

The story of a great club’s history and a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of top flight football

Narrated in a ‘documentary style’ Newcastle United focuses on twenty-one years of the club’s life, from 1988 to 2010. A brief history of the club is followed by a review of the club’s performance and includes some fascinating new insights into the inner workings of the Board and an absorbing analysis of why only a limited number of clubs are pre-destined for Premiership success. Denis Cassidy is not only a devoted Newcastle fan, he was a Director and Chairman of the club during part of the period covered. He therefore writes from a unique perspective, presenting a blueprint for success and a valuable insight into the structure, practices and nancial viability of the Premiership itself. The creation of the Premier League in 1992 had the most profound e ect on the game of football in this country. In telling the story of how the many changes have a ected his club Denis reaches out to all supporters of every club, regardless of league or position. It is a story of glorious history, false promises, greed, incompetence, vanity, triumph and tragedy which will appeal to sports enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike.

Businessman Denis Cassidy is also the author of The Way Things Were, a boyhood memoir, and has been Company Director and Chairman of many publicly quoted companies. A lifelong fan of the club, he became Chairman of Newcastle United in 1998 following the resignation of Freddie Shepherd and Douglas Hall, and resigned when the duo returned to the board later that year.

In his time working for the Daily Sketch and Daily Mail, Brian Scovell probably reported on more Test matches and more international football matches than any other English sports writer. This fascinating, amusing, and nally very moving memoir is lled with hundreds of anecdotes and insights into top sports personalities and other public gures. Thank You, Hermann Goering contains dozens of previously untold stories about, among others, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Princess Diana, Brian Lara, Enoch Powell, and Alan Sugar. Following a German bombing raid on the Isle of Wight when he was a child, Brian spent two years in hospital listening to match commentaries on the radio and reading the leading sports writer of the day, Tom Phillips. So he has Goering to thank for the way his life turned out. His mother wanted him to be a banker, but in that hospital bed, Brian decided to go to Fleet Street. It was an ambition he realised fteen years later.

Celebrating 50 years in Fleet Street in 2010, there are very few better known names in sports journalism than Brian Scovell. Specialising in both football and cricket he is best known for his many years on the Daily Mail, where England cricket captain Ted Dexter nicknamed him ‘Scoop’. As well as almost every big name in cricket and football, he has come into contact with many celebrities and world leaders including Margaret Thatcher, John Major and the Princess of Wales.

ROYAL DATES WITH DESTINYROBERT EASTON

The fascinating story of one of England’s darkest periods

WITCH-HUNTING IN ENGLANDDAVID & ANDREW PICKERING

A calendar of how the great and good met their maker ... the bizarre, the oddball, including the Swedish king who ate too much pudding

• An entertaining compendium of vignettes explaining how Royals

the world over met their ends, throughout history

• Contains episodes from a wide range of Royalty, from the most recent

and most famous – Princess Grace of Monaco and Princess Diana are

both featured – to the most obscure or the most ancient

Royal Dates with Destiny is a collection of short vignettes describing the deaths of the world’s aristocracy. It is presented in ‘calendar form’, with at least one entry for each day of the year. Based on a number of scholarly sources per entry, these 400 or so ‘summaries of mortality’ give an idiosyncratic and delightfully bizarre historical overview of the surprising ways in which the world’s most powerful have died. Each month contains at least a couple of famous royal deaths, yet more often than not the royal will be less well known, yet no less fascinating. Suitably rigorous to grace the shelves of any reference library, yet entertaining enough to appeal to QI fans, Royal Dates with Destiny will enthral and appal in equal measure.

Robert Easton lives and moves across three passions – his love of the Church (he is an Anglican minister), his love of education (he teaches Religious Studies and Latin at Brighton College), and his love of the written word (e.g. his work The Good, the Bad and the Unready, Penguin 2008). He lives and works in Brighton with Kai, his wife, Harry, their dog, and Dugdale, a tangerine-coloured left-hand-drive Citroen 2CV.

YOUNG OFFENDERSJUVENILE DELINQUENCY 1700-2000PAMELA HORN

THE FIRST GIRL GUIDETHE STORY OF AGNES BADEN-POWELLHELEN GARDNER

A fascinating and very readable exploration of how young offenders have passed through the legal justice system over 300 years

Extent: 288 pages, 26 illustrations

In the early twenty- rst century juvenile crime has become a matter of widespread social and political concern and debate. Young O enders examines the way in which attitudes – and the law itself – have evolved in dealing with juvenile wrongdoing from the early eighteenth century to the end of the twentieth. By the use of court and prison records, parliamentary papers, newspapers, the writings of reformers and other records, such as those covering transportation and life in the overseas penal colonies, it considers the way in which the punishment of the young and the de nition of delinquency itself have developed. The gender di erence between boys’ misdeeds, often involving theft and violence, and girls’ o ending, which frequently relates to sexual and moral matters, is also considered. The book shows how attempts at reforming o enders by the creation of purpose-built institutions have met with disillusion and discouragement and have been followed by a reversion to harsher treatment.

Dr Pamela Horn lectured in economic and social history at Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University) for over twenty years. She has now retired but still lectures to family history and local history groups. She has written extensively on social history topics covering the period from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. That includes several books on child life and schooling during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. It was this which led her to turn her attention to juvenile o ending and the way in which attitudes to that di cult question have evolved over almost three centuries.

Movement

In 1909 Sir Robert Baden-Powell’s rally of boy scouts at the Crystal Palace was joined by 2,000 ‘Girl Scouts’. In an age where single-sex education and heavy chaperoning until marriage was the norm, Sir Robert Baden-Powell recognised that a separate organisation for girls was necessary, and his sister ‘Agnes was seen to be the person to lead it’. The First Girl Guide: The Story of Agnes Baden-Powell is the rst ever biography of the extraordinary, and often overlooked, creator of the guiding movement. From her early years, growing up with her brothers and partaking in many boyish activities, Agnes Baden-Powell had all the hallmarks of a Scout. A woman of remarkable energy and drive, she was already in her fties and caring for her elderly mother when she agreed take the lead role in the development of the Girl Guides. Interspersed with the recollections of those who met her, The First Girl Guide: The Story of Agnes Baden-Powell presents the vivid and fascinating history of a life riddled with challenges. Combining Agnes’ personal history with a rich and detailed account of the foundation and development of the Guiding movement, The story of the rst Girl Guide will prove an invigorating read to those within the guiding movement and to the general reader.

THE FEW: THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN IN THE WORDS OF THE PILOTSDILIP SARKAR

• ‘Dilip knows more about me and the pilots with whom I ew during the Battle of Britain than we do! If anyone ever needs to know anything about the RAF during the summer of 1940, don’t ask the Few, ask him!’ GEORGE UNWIN, Battle of Britain ghter ace

• ‘Over the last 30 years Dilip Sarkar has sought out and interviewed or corresponded with numerous survivors worldwide. Many of these were not famous combatants, but those who formed the unsung backbone of Fighter Command in 1940. BRITAIN’S SHIELD: RADAR AND THE DEFEAT OF THE LUFTWAFFEDAVID ZIMMERMAN

2010 is not only the 70th anniversary as the glamorous and often-told story of the Battle of Britain. It is also the 70th anniversary of another nest hour. That of Radar. The individual bravery and skill of these pilots and the ghting qualities of their aircraft would have been in vain if they had not been part of a highly complex and sophisticated air defence system based on radar. The development of the system in just ve years is one of the most remarkable scienti c and technological accomplishments of the twentieth century. The creation of the radar defences has been somewhat overlooked over the years. Many of the studies of radar have focused on the development of the technology, with little attention given to the creation of the much larger system for integrating radar into the nation’s air defences. This work relates the development of radar with the diplomatic and air

policy concerns of the period. The study shows how a small group of scientists, engineers, airmen and politicians accomplished this technological miracle.

The fascinating and rarely told story of life on a one of the Liberty cargo ships in the Second World War

Liberty Ships were cargo ships built by the Americans for the British during World War II. They were initially commissioned to replace those ships lost in early U-Boat raids. From 1943 until 1951, Ian Malcolm was a radio o cer/purser with Alfred Holt & Co., owners of the Blue Funnel Line and the Glen Line. The voyages on the Liberty Ships Samite and Samforth, described in the book, were made in wartime and followed by a year on the Samnesse – trading mainly between Italy and East Africa. Subsequent voyages were made to the Continent, Far East, Australia and Indonesia. His rst ship was, on two occasions, prevented from passing through the Mediterranean. These incidents are, of course, described, but the book deals mainly with life on board his ships and how he spent the, sometimes, prolonged spells in port. The story begins with his entrance into the Merchant Navy as a radio o cer and crossing to Canada on the Queen Elizabeth to join the Samite, in Baltimore.

Spit re ghter pilots tell their extraordinary stories of combat during World War II

SPITFIRE VOICES: LIFE AS A SPITFIRE PILOT IN THE WORDS OF THE VETERANSDILIP SARKAR

• Over 100 historic photographs most previously unpublished from veterans’ own personal collections

Spit re Voices represents an important oral history of the Spit re, from the pilot’s perspective. The stories of survivors are not simply regurgitated, however, but placed into historical context using contemporary documents and often featuring detailed investigative work, as in the reconstruction of Wing Commander Douglas Bader being brought down over France not by an enemy ghter but by one of his own Spit re pilots. Drawing upon the personal letters, diaries, and memories of their families and comrades, the author recounts the deeply moving stories of those who made the ultimate sacri ce. The book features the whole range of combat experienced by Spit re pilots, from air combat to ground attack, deck-landings, crashes and bail-outs, victories and defeats. Copiously illustrated with photographs from the albums of the pilots concerned, Spit re Voices represents exactly what is was like ying to war in a Spit re – in the words of those who lived to tell their tales.

FINEST OF THE FEW: THE STORY OF BATTLE OF BRITAIN FIGHTER PILOT JOHN SIMPSONHECTOR BOLITHO

Battle of Britain ghter ace John Simpson was an extraordinary pilot. He joined 43 Squadron of the RAF in 1936 and was stationed at Tangmere, the archetypical Battle of Britain base in Sussex. He shot down his rst enemy aircraft in February 1940. ‘I hit him fair and square in the wings and fuselage. One of his engines stopped and bits of metal ew o . He then disappeared into some wisps of cloud ... he was burning well when he disappeared into the mist above the sea.’ Twelve more followed as John became an ace at the height of the Battle of Britain. Written by 43 Squadron’s intelligence o cer, Hector Bolitho, Finest of the Few is full of John’s rst-hand accounts of his combat missions against German Me 109s, Heinkel 111s and Dorniers. One of Hector’s key roles was to collate and verify the ‘Combat Reports’ led by pilots which detailed enemy ‘kills’ and the fate of fellow pilots who had been shot down. He was a good friend of John Simpson and the book was written during 1940 based on conversations between the two men, John’s Combat Reports and letters John sent to Hector.

• ‘A poignant and evocative memoir of what it felt like to be a young ghter pilot in the Battle of Britain.’ JULIA GREGSON

At 23 years of age, Barry Sutton had experienced more than the average person experiences in a lifetime. This book, based on a diary he kept during the Battle of Britain, covers September 1939 to September 1940 during which time based at North Weald one of Fighter Command’s most important ghter stations, he shot down three German ghters and was shot down twice himself. It is also the story of his family, his wife whom he married in the midst of the epic air battle and who helped him survive the horri c injuries he sustained after bailing out of his burning Hurricane ghter plane.

MARK ANTONYA LIFEPATRICIA SOUTHERN

History has not been kind to Mark Antony, but then he was probably his own worst enemy, fatally awed, too fond of wine and women, extravagant, impetuous, reckless, always in debt, and attached to all the wrong people. In modern eyes, in uenced by Shakespeare, Antony is perhaps the ultimate tragic hero, who gave up everything for the love of a woman, Cleopatra VII, ruler of Egypt. Octavian presented Antony as a weakling, completely dominated by Cleopatra, and therefore a threat to Rome by dint of his association with the unbridled ambitions of the Egyptian Queen to rule the world. While Antony attended to the eastern half of the Roman world, shoring up Octavian whenever he needed troops, ships, and money, Octavian eventually planned to bring him down, embarking on a smear campaign to convince the Roman people that Antony should be eliminated. The result was civil war and the defeat of Antony in the naval battle of Actium. In Alexandria, Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide in 30 BC. Octavian buried them side by side, and took total control of Rome and Egypt.

ROMAN CLOTHING AND FASHIONALEXANDRA CROOM

Britain is traditionally considered to have been conquered by the Romans in AD 43. In fact the intervention took place because an important faction of the Atrebates tribe under King Verica persuaded the Emperor Claudius to intervene against other Britons who had invaded its territory. Central southern Britain was liberated by a forced landing in Chichester harbour and thereafter remained largely free from the in uence of the Roman army. It became Roman under the patronage of a powerful high king, Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus. Cultural and artistic life ourished, melding Celtic and Roman features into a brilliant new civilization which reached its apogee in the fourth century, when the former protectorate became Britannia Prima with its capital at Cirencester.

There is plenty of information about military dress in Roman Britain and the rest of the Roman Empire, but the evidence for civilian dress has not been comprehensively looked at since the 1930s. In this richly illustrated survey, Alexandra Croom describes the range and style of clothing worn throughout the Western Empire and shows how fashions changed between the rst and the sixth centuries. After a short introduction to the evidence (from archaeology, art and literature), and to the manufacture of clothing and its use in status display, she systematically treats male and female dress, looking at the tunic, toga (for men), mantle (for women) and cloaks; underwear, footwear and specialist wear; hats, hairstyles and jewellery. The book concentrates on the clothing work in the Mediterranean region, but includes a section on provincial fashions. A ne and varied corpus of illustrations (including extensive colour plates) helps to bring the everyday world of the Roman Empire to life.

THE PLANNING OF ROMAN ROADS AND WALLS IN NORTHERN BRITAINJOHN POULTER

The Roman Empire depended on its roads and walls for trade and security, but before these vast structures were built, their courses would need to have been chosen and their lines set out across the countryside. In the absence of any signi cant Roman literature on the subject, John Poulter has devised a way of detecting the directions in which Roman surveyors may have been working when setting out their roads and walls in northern Britain. Applying his methodology to Dere Street, Hadrian’s Wall and the Antonine Wall, Poulter has unearthed a multitude of surprises which o er us new insights into when, how and why these great structures were built. In addition to these individual studies, he o ers comments about Roman roads in general, and compares them with General Wade’s Military Roads in Scotland. He also discounts much previous writing about Roman roads as being too uncritical, and introduces an approach to the analysis of archaeological ndings which seeks to deliver interpretations that are as objective and as balanced as possible.

HADRIAN’S WALLHISTORY AND GUIDEGUY DE LA BÉDOYÈRE

Stretching 73 miles from coast to coast and reaching a height of about 13 feet, Hadrian’s Wall should have been counted as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Today, a World Heritage site, it stands as the most imposing monument north of the Alps and attracts millions of visitors a year. Having rst dealt with the practical questions of transport, clothing and maps, Guy de la Bédoyère explains why and how the Wall was constructed. With the help of almost 100 sketch maps, drawings and photographs, he then conducts the visitor, stage by stage, along the full length of the Wall, providing map locations, route and parking instructions, details of access and opening times, and a full account of everything that can be seen. He also covers the outpost forts, the forts and settlements to the rear (South Shields, Corbridge and Vindolanda) and the local museums which house so many of the artefacts discovered along the Wall. This indispensable guide-book concludes with a list of dates, a glossary and a summary of all the key sources.

EMPIRE HALTS HERE: VIEWING THE HEART OF HADRIAN’S WALLSTAN BECKENSALL

One of Britain’s most impressive monuments, Hadrian’s Wall, is now a prime attraction for visitors who enjoy the excitement of walking through the spectacular scenery of its ‘corridor’ and its visible history. This book of captioned pictures explores a sweep of the most attractive part of its course, from Heddon-on-the-Wall to Birdoswald, followed by carefully-selected images of its main components such as wall, ditch, vallum, forts, milecastles, turrets, bridges and roads that mark its regular course. They include the results of recent excavations that each year add to our understanding of it. Taken over many years and at di erent seasons, these images illustrate why so many people nd the Wall so attractive.

Dr Stan Beckensall, experienced public speaker and holder of numerous academic quali cations and awards, is the highly-respected author of many books on Northumberland, prehistory, drama and poetry. From an extensive archive of hundreds of images he has selected samples that will help many visitors attain a better understanding of the area.

Ubiquitous in every supermarket and corner shop, it is hard to imagine a world without bananas. But it was once so! Britain’s love a air with the humble banana is as much the story of Elders & Fy es, a company set up to import the golden fruit into the United Kingdom. Originally, British imports were of the small Cavendish banana from the Canaries but the British Government was keen to see some trade from the West Indies and Elders & Fy es was formed to import and distribute bananas. The rst ships arrived in 1902 and the company grew and expanded. During both world wars, the eet of Elders & Fy es served as armed merchant cruisers. The ships themselves were a common sight in the ports of Avonmouth, Bristol, Southampton, Portsmouth,Garston, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and Cardi .

The life of one of Scotland’s most romantic and tragic gures

BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE: A LIFEPETER PININSKI

• First new biography for almost 25 years

• ‘The spectre of Bonnie Prince Charlie still haunted England long after his failed invasion.’ THE SUNDAY HERALD

King James II’s eldest legitimate grandson, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, known everywhere as ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’, achieved international fame at the age of twenty ve as the man who by his charisma, daring and energy led the Rising of 1745 against George II which all but succeeded in restoring his exiled royal family – the Stuarts – to their thrones of Scotland, England and Ireland. This new biography charts his early life and reveals the Polish origin of his astonishing dynamism and brittle psyche, inherited from his Polish princess-mother, set against the multi-cultural upbringing of his father’s exiled British court in Rome and the international network of his pan-European cousins, friends, freemasons and bankers who throughout his life nanced and tried to further his ever-more doomed cause.

THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIIIDAVID LOADES

• Hardback received ecstatic reviews:

‘Neither Starkey nor Weir has the assurance and command of Loades.’ SIMON HEFFER, LITERARY REVIEW

‘Incisive and profound. I warmly recommend this book.’ ALISON WEIR

Professor David Loades’ masterly book recounts the whole sorry tale in detail from Henry’s rst marriage, to his brother’s widow, to more or less contented old age in the care of the motherly Catherine Parr.

QUEEN VICTORIA’S STALKERTHE STRANGE STORY OF THE BOY JONESJAN BONDESON

• Serialised in THE DAILY EXPRESS.

• A brilliantly written narrative history by the critically acclaimed author of Buried Alive (‘A little masterpiece of social history’ MAIL ON SUNDAY) and The London Monster (‘Gripping ... an 18th-century detective story of the most piquant kind’ THE GUARDIAN).

After her coronation in 1838, Queen Victoria was a frightened young woman. She was relentlessly pursued by a weird teenager, Edward, ‘the Boy’ Jones, who had an uncanny ability to sneak into Buckingham Palace without being detected. ‘If he had come into my bedroom, how frightened I would have been’, the Queen wrote in her journal after the Boy Jones had been hauled out from underneath a sofa in her dressing room. This book tells the full story of the Boy Jones, one of the rst celebrity stalkers in history.

DEBUNKING WOMEN’S HISTORYMYTHS & LEGENDS ABOUT 101 INFAMOUS WOMEN EXPLODED

ED RAYNER & RON STAPLEY

History is not something that counts to men’s credit alone, though they have often claimed it as their exclusive achievement. This book deals with the part that women have played in history, and acknowledges their role, although at the time they may have received little acknowledgment for it. For women of all stations and in all walks of life have made their contribution to human history, whether they have been queens or rulers, scientists or doctors, entertainers or artists, radicals or conservatives, or simply wives and mothers. Whether, too, they have made that contribution openly and on their own account, or whether they have used their sometimes subordinate position in society to engineer it by more subtle means. This book serves to stress this contribution, sometimes merely to remind the reader of it and to restate it, but sometimes, where necessary, to re-evaluate its true importance.

TAMING THE PANZERSMONTY’S TANK BATTALIONS 3RD RTR AT WARPATRICK DELAFORCE

During the desperate days of May 1940 that ended with the fall of France, the 3rd Battalion Royal Tank Regiment was sent to Calais in support of 30th Infantry Brigade, where it played a vital role in giving the BEF time to e ect the crucial evacuation from Dunkirk’s beaches. Reformed and re tted by the spring of 1941, 3 RTR returned to Europe to ght the panzers once again, this time in the ill-fated Greek campaign, where it became the only RTR unit to see combat. The surviving o cers and men of 3 RTR embarked for Egypt at the end of April where they came under the command of General Montgomery, ghting in all the main North African desert battles including El Alamein. In June 1944, 3 RTR was in the thick of all the desperate battles in Normandy and took part in the ‘Great Swan’ to capture Amiens and Antwerp, then provided right ank protection in Operation ‘Market Garden’. It helped to

halt the panzers in the Ardennes and, as the only RTR unit in the British Army to be equipped with brand new Comet tanks, took part in the many river crossing battles on its way to the Baltic – and on to the end of the war.

THE GREAT WARAN ILLUSTRATED HISTORYPHIL CARRADICE

The Great War – An Illustrated History looks at the causes of the war and the actual events themselves. Naturally, much of it covers the war on the Western Front but there are also sections about other theatres of war – the Middle East, Gallipoli, the war in Africa. The war at sea and in the air are also covered. One particular focus of the book is the new technology that was employed: mines, submarines, gas, aeroplanes. The war on the home front is also looked at, as are the views of artists and poets, writers and photographers. The book itself is a pictorial history where the images – photographs, prints, drawings and postcards – are as important as the text. As such, it is lavishly illustrated with original material, much of it being published here for the rst time.

Phil Carradice is a novelist, historian and broadcaster. He has written over forty books and presents the BBC Wales history programme The Past Master and often broadcasts on Radio Four.
