Despite intense competition from other destinations and increased airline capacity—Queensland is holding its own, as the latest statistics show a growing number of New Zealanders continued to head for the sunshine state in the year ending 30 Jun. New Zealanders took a total of 459,000 trips to Queensland in the year ending 30 Jun, up 6.8% year- on-year; while holiday travel to the state grew 10.6% to 237,000, accord- ing to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics’ International Visitor Survey results. “Look, to get this result given the current market, and all of the extra air capacity and some really com- pelling offers, is just fantastic,” says Tourism and Events Queensland New Zealand manager Sally Holyer. “And what’s really exciting is that first time [Kiwi] holiday visitors are up 23%, year-on-year. I’m just delighted that the market is still so strong and is continuing to grow.” The Gold Coast continues to at- tract the lion’s share of Kiwi travellers, with New Zealanders making some 206,000 trips to the GC for the year under review. At the same time Kiwi travel to Bris- bane, the Sunshine Coast and TNQ was also up, adds Holyer. Kiwi arrivals to the Sunshine Coast were up 12.2% to 71,000 visitors for the year under review—mak- ing New Zealand the region’s top international market. At the same time Kiwi travel to the Whitsundays jumped 25.7%, year-on-year. . . . Trade Still Key While Holyer concedes a number of Kiwi travellers are now booking their Queensland holidays direct—she says there’s still a ‘significant’ amount of bookings via the trade distribu- tion. “And the great news for agents is that the feedback we are getting, as Kiwis stay longer and spending more, is that the trade can still make good money out of selling Queensland.” The average length of stay for the Kiwi market is up to 11.3 nights, with Kiwis spending some AUD586 million in the state, up 1% year- on-year. “New Zealanders also stayed a total of 5.173 million room nights in Queensland, for the year ending in Jun,” adds Holyer. Air New Zealand boss Christopher Luxon reportedly told Forbes he can envision the carrier flying to New York from Auckland, once the carrier secures new airplanes —and House of Travel’s commercial director, Brent Thomas, says if the hopes ever came to fruition, the flights would be ‘very well received’. “The ease of removing a stopover en-route to this popular destina-tion would open up the entire east coast of the States,” he says. “We’ve already seen that the NZ direct route to Houston has been a hit in long-haul travel to the US, and adding another alternative flight path for New Zealanders will continue to fulfil demand.”Thomas adds that approximately 53,000 Kiwis travelled to New York in the last year, according to New York City Tourism, with an average length of stay of five nights. “The number of HoT customers travelling to New York is continuing to grow year-on-year and we imagine this will skyrocket if direct flights can be offered from New Zealand.”First Travel Group has also not-ed a spike in Kiwi demand for the Big Apple and welcomes the

AKL-NYC Non-stop?news NYC may be on NZ’s radar. Overall, the group’s US bookings are up 33% year-on-year—with NYC bookings up 50%, says FTG gm retail John Willson, a trend he attributes in part to the competitive airfares we’ve seen in-market. “This also proves to us that the western gateways were now only part of the overall USA suc-cess—we would welcome the advent of any non-stop services to America’s east coast, to further grow demand,” adds Willson.NZ says it is constantly assessing its route network however it doesn’t have any route announcements to make at present. There’s also no mention of just which aircraft type NZ is eying to operate on the AKL-NYC route, which at this stage, could be one of the world’s longest routes.

Mexico EarthquakeWith thoughts firmly directed to the people who have been impacted by last weekend’s 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Mexico, Viva Expedi-tions advises that all its clients are accounted for and safe in either Mexico or Guatemala. The wholesaler says that all air-ports, including Oaxaca and Chi-apas (the most affected regions) are operating normally and roads and bridges in these states are currently being inspected, and as yet no major closures have been advised. Hotels appear to be operating nor-mally, although the regions are re-porting minor damage to some churches. Viva says all its tours are operating as normal and will advise any news as it comes to hand should the need arise.

House of Travel says it needs to keep ahead in the constantly changing travel industry, as the chain rolls out its new personal travel management (broker) divi-sion, headed up by industry vet-eran Mike Southcombe.“Although a niche part of the overall industry, the past 10 years has seen personal travel management nearly double in size with approximately 600 [brokers] in New Zealand to-day,” says HoT chief executive Mark O’Donnell—adding that the move is a logical step for HoT ‘to continue our strong position within the market’.Southcombe starts in the Auck-land-based role from 18 Sep and is charged with setting up and imple-menting the new HoT broker chan-nel. O’Donnell says Southcombe is a

perfect fit for the role, and that the move represents ‘a significant op-portunity for HoT Group to expand even further.”HoT’s business in Australia has more than 500 brokers and is continuing to grow. “We will apply these learnings to the New Zealand market to pro-vide a new model for this part of the industry,” says O’Donnell. “[South-combe] will be key to that success.” Southcombe, who has extensive in-dustry experience, was one of the founding partners of Travel Manag-ers Group New Zealand before selling his stake in 2014—and says he can-not wait to get back in the industry.“It is an exciting time to join the team and to be able to lead the strat-egy and development of the [broker] channel,” he says. “…I have seen first-hand what is being achieved by the HoT Group in Australia and be-ing able to replicate a comprehensive offering with a business that shares that passion is really exciting.”The new HoT broker channel boss says he is looking forward ‘to deliver-ing something new and exciting in the coming months’.

When Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa’s additional 40 new rooms come on-line before the end of the year, the property will have expanded its foot-print to cover 2.5km of beachfront on Denarau Island. And given that expanded space, the resort’s cluster director of sales, Sal-ly-ann Rogers says it has introduced the Bula Express, a free shuttle that circles the resort.Rogers updated agents at last week’s Tourism Fiji roadshow and also out-lined that the recently-opened Koro adults only beach club features two pools, a gym, a spa, function centre and a restaurant—and it’s free to resort guests 18 and over. “Koro offers a buffet breakfast, all day dining, poolside day beds, loungers and an extensive drinks menu,” she says. Rogers adds that the property has taken to selling barbecue packs and products in its convenience store in an effort to encourage guests to use the on-site room barbecues.

Walt Disney World’s 50Four new attractions are on their way to Walt Disney World Resort for its 50th birthday in 2021. The attractions include TRON Light-cycle Power Run, a coaster style at-traction from Shanghai Disneyland, and a state of the art theatre coming to Main Street USA. The entire Epcot theme park will be expanded to allow room for a Ra-tatouille inspire attraction and new Guardians of the Galaxy attraction-Mission Breakout.

Airport PatternsForwardKeys, which predicts future global travel patterns, has teamed up with Skyscanner in a move that will see the two share data, enabling airports to see the catchment ar-eas of their travellers and discover whether they are suffering from ‘leakage’ to other airports.“With the combining of our two data sets we are getting one step closer to a 100% model,” says For-wardKeys co-founder and chief executive Olivier Jager. “The more information we can cross-reference, the better image we can create of tomorrow’s travellers. . .”The partnership is also envisioned to help airport executives decide which new routes to develop.
