In the etymology of the Tupi-Guarani people, Iguaçu means “big water”. And it's a fitting description!

To give you an idea of the sheer size of Itaipu, the Panoramic

Tour is the most highly recommended outing. Through it,

visitors are given an external view of the largest hydroelectric

plant in the world in terms of energy generation.

Special Circuit

The largest energy producing hydroelectric power plant in the world, Itaipu

is a feat that captivates all admirers through its size and technological and

environmental characteristics. The enormity of the Plant is a spectacle that

neither words nor images are capable of expressing. There is so much

energy that it must be seen personally to feel its full grasp.

Besides following the postcard-like course of

this magnificent dam, this outing also takes

visitors to the very heart of the world's largest

hydroelectric power plant. There, visitors can

admire its majestic wedge-shaped concrete

cathedrals. Feel the uninterrupted pulsation of

the Plant when touching its walls and

penstocks, which direct the water inside the

turbines. Visit the command center, where

Brazilian and Paraguayan technicians monitor

production, separated only by a symbolic

border. And, finally, descend to the level that

houses its 20 turbines and get to within a few

meters of one of them in full operation,

generating 700 megawatts – enough power to

supply a city of 2.5 million households. An

experience to remember forever.

reflectors and 112 lamps, creating a true

show of light and sound.

A great option for discovering a little more about the regional fauna and flora is a visit to the Bela Vista Biological Sanctuary, a shelter created to receive animals and plants displaced by the plant's reservoir. With the guidance of specialized monitors, it is possible to visit a number of routes that involve environmentally educative lessons and trails through native forest, passing compounds that are home to animals typical to the region of the lake that supplies the hydroelectric plant.

Bela Vista Biological Sanctuary

Piracema (Spawning) Channel

The Biological Sanctuary shelters over 50,000 species of animals and plants.

Itaipu takes its commitment to the protection of the environment very seriously. An example of this is the Spawning Channel, an architectural work of art that allows fish from the Paraná River to swim upstream past the plant in the direction of their breeding areas, located above the hydroelectric plant's reservoir.

Stretching 10 kilometers, the Channel also has a section dedicated exclusively to canoeing competitions: the Itaipu Channel, considered one of the best in the world for practicing canoeing. The conservation of fish and the high level sporting practice add an extra dose of excitement when visiting Itaipu.

Piracema is the spawning period of reophilic fish (fish that migrate to breed), occurring between the months of October and March.
