Cavanagh was first introduced to the topic of human trafficking in 2009 when she followed Ricky Martin on Twitter and through him she followed Aaron Cohen, author of Slave Hunter. “After reading his biography, I knew I had to get involved, but I didn’t know how, so I turned to social media to get all the information I could ac- quire on the topic,” she says. “I knew if only one person was saved from this evil, my job would be done.” During the next few years, Cavanagh assisted various organisa- tions with campaigns to raise aware- ness and in 2012 she participated in the Unicef “Believe in Zero” competi- tion. Her entry, which placed focus on child trafficking, won. In 2013 she went to New York to see Martin perform on Broadway, and was pleasantly surprised when he greeted her by name and said how happy he was she was there. Sewage streams into riversFEVER REPORTER

AFRIFORUM has urged the eThekwini Municipalityto address a sewage problem reported three daysago. According to Willie Beetge, sewage is spilling outat the Kingsway High School turningcircle.

“All the rivers are contaminated, the bird park, thecanal next to Toyota, the river next to the golfcourse,” says Beetge.

He says feedback from the municipality is poor.“The call centre has an average of a twoweek

turnover. On the Winkelspruit issue, it took 11 reference numbers and five weeks, with two children withE. coli in hospital, and still management insists thatthe call centre is the only way to deal with complaints. We need somebody who can actually startmanaging internal problems without window dress

ing ratepayers’ with irrelevant reports withoutaction,” Beetge stated in recent communicationswith eThekwini.

At the time of going to press eThekwini had calleda meeting to discuss the issue.

Load shedding stage two alertTHE eThekwini Municipality has beenadvised by Eskom that the country iscurrently at stage two of load shedding. due to high demand.

eThekwini’s loadshedding schedules are drawn up in accordance withthe national guideline document (NRS0489) with specific consideration totechnical constraints, practicality andsensitivity to local economic impact. The schedule comprises three stages ofemergencies.

Stage one is residential and commercial load, while stage two includesstage one and industrial load. Stagethree includes the entire area of Dur

ban, with the exclusion of strategic national resources.

All affected blocks are scheduledfor a twohour outage with an additional half hour contingency to caterfor switching on. Customers are onlyscheduled to go off once a day understages one and two and twice dailyshould a stage three emergency be declared.

The loadshedding schedule is aguideline to determine which block acustomer is in and should be accurateunder normal operating conditions. However, each customer can be fedfrom multiple substations, some of

which could be in different blocks. Under faultor highload conditions, customers can befed from alternativeneighbouring substations, some of whichmay be in other blocks.

“We may incur technical difficulties in restoring the load andshould a customer remain off for a substantial amount of time after the block has beenscheduled to be restored, that incidentmust be treated as afault and reported accordingly. We continueto urge residents andbusinesses to implement electricitysavingmeasures at all timesto help reduce constraints on the powersystem,” Eskom states.

River mouth breached>> Mouth was sanded over due to exceptional high tides

DURING the past two weeks,theKZNSouthCoastexperi-encedexceptionalhightides

and currents. This resulted in several river

mouths being sanded over. While the Umgeni river mouth

had to be breached on three con-secutive days, the AmanzimtotiRiver was no exception and withfurther rain experienced inland, the river flooded Civic Road andparts of the old Amanzimtoti cen-tral business distruct.

Continued monitoring byofficials resulted in a request toEzemvelo Wildlife, allowing theeThekwini Municipality authori-sation to breach the mouth andwith the following prerequisites:

• Breaching of the mouth to bedone one to two hours before lowtide in order tomaximise a flush ofsediments.

• Breaching location tobenorthof the weir.

• Access to the preferredbreaching point to be done withminimal impactandinlinewiththemunicipalities “duty of care” interms of the Nema.

• Notifying users of the activity, cordoning the site for public safety.

• An Ezemvelo KZNWildlife of-ficial will oversee the activity.

In line with the 11.40am lowtide, the exercise was thus under-taken from 9am on Friday withtotal discharge recorded at12.47pm.

Ward 97 Councillor AndréBeetge confirmed that he wasinundatedwithcallsfromresidentswho raised concern regarding theblack colouration of the sea aswell as fish found dead alongthe beach later in the day.

Popular belief attributed the

colouration and smell to a sewagedischarge.

“[There is]nocauseforconcern.

“Boththeblackcolourandsmellrelates not to sewage, but tonutrient-rich sediments that accu-mulate at the bottomof the lagoon.

“Breaching the river remains asensitive decision as it affects theriver’s ecosystem.”

• Only vehicles displaying a “disabled”sign will be accommodated in the parkingdemarcated as such to the right of thepaved area and thus also outside the immediate area required for emergency access. Noting that there is only space for onesuch parking, and given that it can becomeextremely busy, it is requested that if possible, the disabled parking be used rather asdropoff and collect bay, as opposed to itbeing used as a parking for the day.

• The information board against the kiosk wall, installed by Sapphire CoastTotiTourism using public funding in December2013 and since confirmed defaced by localyouth, will be repaired as soon as fundingis available, as it contains valuable information and emergency numbers.

• Beach cleaners will, to the best oftheir ability, remove chewing gum deposited all along the paved area by our localyouth.

One stands astounded at being presented with evidence that it is our localyouth who are responsible for parking theirscooters and/or motorcycles in the disabled parking, for spitting chewing gum andfinding it amusing when people step intoit, who tear at the signboards and whotaunt and swear at law enforcement officials when confronted. Why do they findit necessary to do this to the very beachthey themselves frequent virtually everyday?

Following the implementation of theabove law enforcement and Metro Policeare tasked to issue citations, but shouldthis continue, and if deemed necessary, vehicles will be impounded.

Let’s rather take pride in our town andwhat it offers to both the local communityand our visitors.

Making a differenceIT is inspiring to see how locals are gettinginvolved internationally and making a difference. Julie Cavanagh’s story highlightshuman trafficking and serves as testimonythat anyone can make a difference.

Local MMA coach Morné Swanepoel hasbeen approached to promote the sport inthe Seychelles, so he’s making a difference.

The first of February is traditionally acelebration of the sanctity of human life, incontrastabortionfiguresareontheincrease, since the legalisation thereof.

Let’s make 2015 a year when we each doone thing to make a difference.

Organisation togrow in visibilityTANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

THE focus of the Amanzimtotibased nonprofit organisation, Africa Cares for Life, in 2015 is to grow invisibility and in the services it offers to pregnancy carecentres across Africa and South Africa. In order to effect this change Daniele Gradwell has taken over asmanaging director.

Last year Africa Cares experienced many changeswhich has necessitated a growth strategy. DanielejoinedtheteamatAfricaCaresforLifeinOctober2014.She has a number of years of experience in the pregnancy ministry and the board of Africa Cares believethat she will be an asset to the organisation.

The organisation establishes and equips pregnancy care ministries that reach out to women who arefacing crisis pregnancies in South Africa and Africa.

“We aim to up our services to the centres underour care, to increase training and develop new programmes this year,” Gradwell explains.

Among other things Gradwell will develop material in different languages.

“Currently most of our training material comesfrom the United States and we need to develop something that is more relevant to our market. Because theconcept of pregnancy care centres is well establishedin U.S. we have relied on them to provide a lot of infrastructure to us, most of the resources were however,English or Spanish,” she says.

The organisation also offers leadership trainingand counselling courses to the public.

“The community can also be involved by volunteering their services, donating office supplies orprinting and binding services and providing speakingopportunities for us,” Gradwell says.

Blood supplies low

THE South African National BloodService (SANBS) had shown asignificant increase in the blood

stock over the festive season.“Donors showed their support

through, what is often a difficult timefor SANBS, and we managed to getthrough this period without going intoa shortag — for this we say a big thankyou to all who gave unselfishly,” saysSANBS communications manager,Vanessa Raju.

“However, there has been a massivedecline in donations as we entered2015, which resulted in days’ coverdropping to 1,6 days.

“This is significantly lower than thefive days’ blood stock that is needed tomeet the demand in the country. Toachieve this safe level of blood stock,SANBS would need to collect 3 000units of blood nationally daily” Rajusays.

In KwaZuluNatal blood stockshave dropped to as little as 0.7 days, that is less than a day’s stock.

“We have seen a slight improvement with the schools having justopened, and blood drives beingplanned at these institutions, which isnow at 1.3 days,” Raju says.

SANBS reminds donors to adoptblood donation as the one action totake this new year.

“It’sasimplewayofmakingadiffer

ence to others and all you need to dois donate blood four times a year or every 56 days. SANBS has a special edition sports bag to give to donors whoachieve four donations in a calendaryear,” Raju says.

The minimum requirements to be ablood donor:

• be between the ages of 16 and 65years

• weigh minimum of 50kgs• be in general good health• live a safe sexual lifestyle.Should you meet the above require

ments and wish to find out where youcan donate blood, please visitwww.sanbs.org.za or call0800 11 9031.

More than 1million babiesaborted in SA>> Abortion was legalised in SA 17 years ago

TANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

SUNDAY, 1 February marks thecelebration of the Sanctity ofHuman Life.

“Thephrase ‘sanctityof life’ refersto the idea that human life is sacredand holy...” defines Wikipedia.

The idea that human life is to bevalued appears to be a foreign con-cept in South Africa.

Ithasbeen17yearssinceabortionwas legalised in South Africa andsince then 1 200 000 babies havebeen aborted in the country.

Lifeaffirmingandwomen-centredorganisation Africa Cares for Life re-ports the figures growsexponentiallyevery year.

“These are just the reportedcases,” says Shanno Enoch of AfricaCares for Life.

“According to statistics published

on news24.com the number of legalabortions in South Africa were77 771 in 2011, a 31% increase from2010. This translated to a rate of38/1000 women having illegal abor-tions in our country,” Enoch says.

KwaZulu-Natal was recorded asthe fourth highest province at 8 839in 2010. Statistics released by theNational Assembly in 2013 recordeda total of 82 920 legal abortions. Stillplaced with the fourth highest rates,KZN came in slightly lower at 8 675.Last year’s figures were unavailableat the time of going to press.

Managing director of Africa Caresfor Life anddirector of thePregnancyResource Centre in Amanzimtoti,Daniele Gradwell says last year thecentre saw fewer pregnant womenaskingforhelp, whichcanpossiblybeattributed to an increase in abortion.

She says the age group for crisispregnancieshasalsochangedsignifi-cantly and most crisis pregnanciesnow occur in women between theages of 13 and 18 years, while previ-ously clients weremostly in the 19 to25-year-old category.

‘Talk Sign 2015’under wayKALISHA [email protected]

THE Talk Sign Campaign, launched by theKZN Blind and Deaf Society in 2014, is wellunder way and encourages South Africansto learn sign language.

The campaign also raises money, through the sale of Talk Sign stickers andfundraising initiatives. The campaign is also aimed at putting pressure on the gov

ernment to make it the 12th official language and for sign language to be taughtas a subject at schools and tertiary institutions.

Shamila Surjoo, director of the KZNBlind and Deaf Society, was delightedabout the announcement last August bythe MEC of Education Peggy Nkonyeni, that sign language would be introduced into mainstream schools over the next fiveyears.

The KZN Department of Education willalso train teachers in sign language shesaid. She also announced that she will beengaging Higher Education Minister BladeNzimande, to propose that sign language

be introduced in tertiary institutions as asubject.

With the introduction of sign languageas a school subject, the KZN Blind and DeafSociety is confident that the Talk SignCampaign and Talk Sign Day 2015 will receive support from schools and corporates.
