Motoshi Kosako Jazz Harpist

Petroglyphe Gallery welcomes back for the third concert series, Motoshi Kosako. With the release of his 4th CD following a tour in Brazil, he will be sharing some of his new pieces he has performed! Mr. Kosako was born in Matsuyama City, Japan. He started his musical training on the piano and also the guitar. In Tokyo he played the acoustic and electric guitar in profes-sional Jazz bands and the Swing Journal magazine described him as “one of the most remarkable young Jazz musicians.” In 1997, Mr. Kosako moved to the United States and soon after he started playing the harp. He is primarily self-taught with a few lessons from Dominique Piana (the professor of Holly Name College, Oakland, CA) to learn fundamental harp technique. He was the principal harpist of Stockton Symphony Orchestra and the featured soloist for 2009-2010 season. His latest music innovation is improvisation and composition for the harp. In 2007 he won the second place in Lyon & Healy International Jazz & Pop Harp Competition and received the “Best of Sacramento” award from Sacramento Magazine as “Best Jazz Hound in Tie and Tail”. Sacramento Magazine says, “Kosako plays with fluid, modern style that evokes Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea.” His groundbreaking style is also noted in Harp Column as “Motoshi Kosako, a Japanese native whose introspective soloing was reminiscent of Keith Jarrett.” He plays numerous original compositions and standards as solo or in trio and quartet. Since 2008

he started touring Japan to give performances and various workshops and he is considered as the most influential Jazz harp-ist in Japan. In 2002 and 2003, he recorded two classical harp albums, Celestial Harp I and Celestial Harp II. In April 2008, he has released his first Jazz Album, Naked Wonder with his trio, Bill Douglass (bass, bamboo flute) and Daryl Van Druff (drums). In 2010 he has released his solo album “Living harp” in Japan and producing new album “ Place in the heart” with Grammy ward winning musician, Paul McCandless (oboe, English horn, soprano sax, bass clarinet) and made their record debut in Japan distributed by KING RECORDS INTERNATIONAL. Petroglyphe Gallery is excited to feature such a talented and visionary musical artist!

A New Show of Paintings & Drawings by Steve Holler Gallery 10 is pleased to welcome back local artist Steve Holler for a showing of his recent paintings and drawings. Mr. Holler's new show "Up Close" will open on August 2 and run through August 31, 2014. "Up Close is a collection of images encouraging the viewer to look at the scenes and objects around them with an eye for the beauty and simplicity of detail. Through a series of paintings, depicting a variety of subjects, the artist shares his visual point-of-view through texture, form, color and composition. In this series of recent works Steve Holler continues his interest in the vitality of the painted surface and the introduction of bold and expressive color. Steve Holler's paintings and drawings are representational with subject matter focusing on iconic environments and objects found in everyday life. His acrylic

on canvas paintings have been described as bold and fresh, with clear color and strong interpretive lighting. Although paint is applied to the canvas with the purpose of representing light and form the viewer is also encouraged to enjoy the spontaneity of the painted surface. Steve Holler's sensitivity in line, form and tone can be appreciated through viewing his original graphite drawings. Line is used to capture form and volume as it defines the positive space that represents the subject. Tonal values are created through the build-up of line and graphite texture. Steve Holler holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California College of the Arts. He is currently on the full-time faculty of the Art Institute of California-Sacramento.

Gallery 10 is located at 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek. For more infor-mation call 209-267-0203 or visit their website at gallery10suttercreek.com.

AMADOR COUNTY FAIR 2014 ARTISTS, ENTRIES, AND VOLUNTEERS

Congratulations and a BIG Thank You to all involved with our Fine Art and Photo Exhibit "There's no place like home". The fair is all packed up and put away till next year! We received many compliments on our Photo & Fine Art exhibit. This is a tremendous effort that the ACAA accomplishes on an annual basis. I had the generous help of slightly more than 40 volunteers, many filling multiple posts over the ten days it takes to throw this four day party! I could not even attempt this job with out the other three members of my team Judy Day & David & Leslie Schupp. My sincerest thanks to every one who pitched in to help, and all those who entered their art and photos to share with the community. I'm happy to announce that the Popular Vote was won by Dorothy Magoffin for photog-raphy, William Porteous for Sculpture and Lora Lee Warden for Art.

LAURIE WILLIAMS FEATURED ARTIST AT SUTTER CREEK GALLERY AUGUST 2014

Animals, both wild and domestic inspire Laurie Williams’ art. “Since early childhood I have loved animals,” she said, “and have made them the subject of my paintings and sculp-tures.” Sutter Creek Gallery’s featured artist for August grew up on a ranch which allowed her the opportunity to learn about the goats, horses, deer and other creatures which are the focus of her art. Each year at the county fair, Williams sits in the animal enclosures making life drawings, which are later turned into bold-colored acrylic paintings or clay and Papier-mâché figures.

In college, Williams studied art at Sonoma and Humboldt State Universities as well as the San Francisco Art Institute. The artists that most inspire her work are the great colorists: Gauguin, Van Gogh, the Fauves and the German expressionists. Their influence is evi-dent in her use of bold colors to depict her subjects. Her work has been shown in Sono-ma, Humboldt and Calaveras counties and each year Williams donates a piece to the Sacramento PBS (KVIE) Art Auction. Some of these have received special recognition in the auction. She said recently, “I continue to be sustained and satisfied by my artwork and hope to have many creative years ahead.”
