Gourd Artist Heather Hopman was featured at the ACAA meeting in February

HEATHER HOPMAN, multi-talented artist, demonstrated February 11 at the ACAA meeting. She

displayed not only her knowledge of the subject but her enthusiasm for her craft. She discussed and

provided examples of various types of gourds, wood burning, gold leafing and other methods of

enhancement. Heather and her husband are the owners of Chaos Glass Works in Sutter Creek.

The Amador County Artists Association meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST FOR MARCH

LYNN SLADE

Lynn Slade received her BFA in Design from the University of Southern Califor-nia and her graduate work in Graphic Design was done at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. For over 20 years, she owned the Alyson Design Group, a graphic design company specializing in corporate advertising, magazine and marketing design as well as direct mail advertising. In addition, she served as a volunteer teacher of drawing and design both privately and in the elementary schools in Alameda County. In 1990, she concluded her advertising career and started to paint. At first she painted in straight watercolor. After a few years she discovered the rice paper/collage technique. Lynn’s paintings are a combination of watercolor and hand-made rice papers known as “Washi”. She has been doing some form of this technique ever since. She states, “I began working with this combination to try and capture both the color and texture of my subjects and to recreate the mood that these subjects inspired in me. Washi (textured rice paper) allows me to ex-press all aspects of a subject. I am drawn to bold, dramatic shapes and color and I love the color intensity that the layering of papers and paint provides.”

Looking closely at one of her watercolor collages you will find multiple layers of color enhanced by the unique qualities of the washi itself: small pieces of newsprint, gold threads and specks of silver, bits of bark or leaves, unusual patterns, various textures that draw you into the image. The layering of papers and paint makes both the creation and the finished piece be-come a tactile experience as well as a visual one. Her watercolor collages have won many awards and are incuded in private collections both nationally and internationally. Most recently, her painting “Foe Gold” won 1st Place in the Lodi Community Art Centers’ National Spring Show, and “Perched” was accepted into San Diego Watercolor Society 32nd International Exhibition. Lynn’s paintings have also been honored in widely recognized publications. In 2010, she received 2nd place in Watercolor Magazine’s International Watermedia Showcase Competition. Her painting “Bale Patterns” can be seen in the Feb., 2010 issue of the magazine, and “Bale Patterns” was also selected for Splash 12: Celebrating Artistic Vision.

SUTTER CREEK GALLERY FEATURES SANDRA CAMPBELL IN MARCH Spring is just around the corner so Sandra Campbell is highlighting florals for her show at the Sutter Creek Gallery where she will be the featured artist for March. Landscapes and abstracts will also be repre-sented. Some images are pastel paintings while others are mixed media and collage. Campbell began to study art after retiring from teaching. She always had an interest in art, just not the time to pursue it, so she incorporated the arts into her middle-school English classes at every opportunity. After retirement, she enrolled in college classes in drawing, watercolor and the use of colored pencils. Later she studied under master pastelist Thelma Davis of Placerville for three years. Since then she attended workshops conducted by pastel artists Gil Dellinger, Clark Mitchell, and others.

Besides pastels, Campbell has long been interested in the possibilities represented by collage. Last year she completed a class at Cosumnes River College in collage and assemblage which has opened up new avenues of creation. A few of her pieces have been fabricated from cup-up pastel artworks. Others are made from rice and other torn or cut papers. Most re-cently Campbell took up a challenge to paint 30 pieces in 30 days. This led to experimentation with acrylic paints, including mixed media and abstracts.

Sutter Creek Gallery invites you to meet Sandra Campbell at the reception in her honor on Saturday, March 7, from 4 to 7 p.m., as part of the region’s First Satur-day Art Trek. She is one of the local artists exhibiting at the cooperative located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street. Besides original paintings, Sutter Creek Gallery offers many affordable items including prints, cards, jewelry, gourds and fiber arts. Sutter Creek Gallery – Jim Glanton – Featured Artist for Februay. Think about where you might want to show. We have discovered that groupings of artists draw a lot of peo-

ple, and group locations are organizing now. Contact Karen if you want more info or suggestions.

Start preparing a list of your special customers to invite. Personal invitations to people who already know

your work tend to bring them to the show, and collecting email addresses, snail mail addresses now will

ensure that your list is larger, and that no gets left out.

Share your talents and ideas about how to cut expenses and increase scholarship money at a Studio Tour

ANJE OLMSTEAD'S collage of MARGARET DALTON was commis-

sioned by Jackson Rancheria in March 2014. The portrait of the de-

ceased tribal leader measures 9" wide by 8' high. The tribe asked

for certain visuals to be included, such as tribal members, meetings

with then-President Clinton and then-Governor of CA Pete Wilson,

along with favorites: her granddaughter, some well-known country

singers, a large stuffed rabbit and more.

The collage, which tells Margaret’s life story visually, was unveiled

in a sacred ceremony February 9 attended by tribal members and a

few guests. The portrait is now open for viewing by the public at its

installation site just outside Margaret's Café at the Rancheria.

Sheri Hoeger, who has been creating decora-

tive and fine art for 25 years, will be demonstrat-ing at the next meeting of the ACAA on March 11, at 7 p.m., in the Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson. Hoeger she will demonstrate her technique for painting with fluid acrylics mixed with medium for increased open

time and discussing her techniques for capturing the likeness and person-ality of an animal. ACAA meets each month on the second Wednesday.

California taxpayers can support arts education programs this tax season through Keep Arts In Schools Fund. Individuals may make tax-deduductible contributions of $1 or more through the Voluntary Contribution portion of 2014 state tax return.

Watercolor Workshop with Jeannie Vodden

Join Gold Country artist Jeannie Vodden in a one-day watercolor workshop de-signed to teach you her basic watercolor techniques, limited color schemes and layering methods. During the class you will learn about creating the illusion of volume, about reflected light, and adding extra color to create luminescence. You will learn how to paint spar-kling water drops, a rose, and a wall paper background. Watercolor demonstrations, class discussions and one on one instruction are always part of Jeannie’s classes.

Advanced students are encouraged to bring their own rose photos to work from. A drawing template and photo will be provided for those who would like to follow along with her as she demon-strates. Jeannie will have handouts, color and instructional charts for sale, as well as prints and cards. Gallery 10, Sutter Creek, is proud to welcome Bryan Hammond for the month of March as our featured artist

Bryan has been painting since he was young, gaining a strong foundation of skills and technique, and love of landscapes, from Howard Rees of Jackson, CA. He graduated with a BA in Art from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, in 2012. The years following his graduation have been filled with experimentation and exploration of many media. Bryan feels that painting is his strength and the best platform to express his interpretation of the world. Gallery 10 is delighted to offer Bryan this opportunity to exhibit his work in a one-man show during March. There will be a reception in Bryan’s honor on Saturday, March 7, 2-5 P.M. at Gallery
