Gallery 10 to Feature Nationally Recognized Artist Stella Stevens

and Jeweler Marie Martz-Mort During September

Stella Stevens has been delightfully consumed by a passion for her art that began in early childhood. Although essentially self-taught, she did have an opportunity while living in South Korea to paint with a Master of Chinese painting who introduced her to wa-tercolor which became her choice of mediums.

Stella is inspired by nature and her love of animals which is clearly reflected in her art. Ms. Stevens was commissioned by the Unit-ed States Department of the Interiors' Fish and Wildlife Services to do a piece for the Recovery Program of a Threatened Species. The image was to be used on all educational and outreach materials.

Additionally, she has been the Featured Artist for the Sandhill Crane Festival In Lodi, California. The California Department of Fish and Game, and the Lodi Chamber of Commerce used her image of “Unison Call” Sandhill Cranes on all promotional materials for the Sandhill Crane Festival. Stella‘s artwork was also used to promote The Central Valley Birding Symposium where she was a fea-tured artist.

Stella received further recognition for her talent when the U.C. Davis International House featured her creation "Cranes of the World".

This award winning artist’s work can be seen in many homes and collections throughout the United States and abroad. In the Unit-ed Kingdom the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen and the P.B.G.V. Kennel clubs commissioned her work for their National Specialty. Stella enjoys showing her work in a limited group of Galleries and working on commissions.

Along with Ms. Stevens, jeweler Marie Martz-Mort will also be featured. Marie first discovered her love of the medium, metal smith-ing, at Cal. State Univ. Sacramento in the late 70's. She has acquired her skills at the bench over the past 34 years by working with a custom jeweler in downtown Sacramento and a custom jeweler in Sutter Creek, Rene Cazenave, as well as the old trial and error process. She enjoys most aspects of the jewelry making process, from the first idea to sketches of the finished design, the actual construction or carving of a wax for casting of the piece to the final touches of setting the gemstones and polishing.

Marie tends to look for interesting combinations of gemstones, utilizing some under appreciated varieties like natural spinel, fancy colored garnets, chrome diopside, natural zircons, and gold in quartz to name a few. Also included in her creations are moss ag-ates, fossilized dinosaur bone, natural pearls and fire agate.

A reception in honor of these two creative ladies will be held at Gallery 10 in Sutter Creek on Saturday, September1, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. The Gallery is located on 15 Eureka St. next to Susan's Place. For further information call the gallery at 209 - 267-0203 or visit its website gallery10suttercreek.com The Gallery is open Thursday - Monday from 11:00am to 5:00 pm. Come to the Gallery and experience some beautiful pieces by these women. Their art will be prominently on display thru the month of September.

Zbigniew Richard Kozikowski

At Hanford St. Gallery

For September the Hanford St. Gallery is presenting a series of cityscapes by Polish born and educated Zbigniew Kozikowski. He found his original inspiration in the cubist tradition of Picas-so and Braque and his paintings reflect a constant pushing of the usual boundaries in terms of materials, methods, color and subject. We can find, in this collection, a mixed use of acrylic, oil, watercolor and various texturizing elements as well as an integration of abstract forms and the vivacious beauty of nature and light. Color evokes emotion, and Kozikowski’s courageous, sometimes rebellious use of color propels his paintings to transcend the ordinary.

"I believe that what we perceive as a visual world is only a phenomenon, re-peatedly created by light. In light, we find the deepest meaning of existence. Its immateriality is the source of materiality for our senses. My aim is to change it into colored spots so harmonized that they become the materialization of light, called color." ~Zbigniew

Well known for his cityscapes and skyline paintings here he brings the freshness of experimen-tation that is alive in all his work, it is this life, ultimately, which captivates us and transcends boundaries between nations and rises above contemporary judgments on esthetics and style. The skyline themes set forth in this new series are many times lifted from Kozikowski’s experi-ence of a particular place, but are not intended to be representative of these places. Rather, they are presented as an interpretative vision of the imagination. A viewer is invited to enter into this vision, and thus enter into his own journey through feelings and memories. The experi-ence of the viewer is heightened through the boldness of line and light and the inspired juxtapo-sition of modern and archetypically classical themes. Kozikowski received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland, after which he traveled extensively in Eastern and Western Europe, participating in many art seminars and workshops. His work can be found in collections of these countries, as well as in the United States. The painter, his wife and son came to the U. S. in 1993, joining his sister in the Sacramento area. He first started exhibiting his artwork on Del Paso Boulevard, then moved into the Art Foundry building, at 1021 R St. Kozikowski’s studio is open the second Saturday of every month and by appointment. You are invited to meet the artist at an Amador 1st Saturday Art Trek reception in the gallery on September1st. The exhibit will run from August 30 through September 30. Hanford St. Gal-lery is located at 291 Hanford St., Old Hwy 49 (next to the Days Inn), in Sutter Creek, CA, and is open Thu/Fri/Sat 10 - 5 and Sunday 11 -4:30.
