Flex in flux: faculty changes academic calendar “Fourteeiz weeks is not enough time for a semester. We simply need more instructional time to accomplish our objectives. ”

“Our present calendar does not permit a final examination period. We need this for an unhurried culminating evaluation. ’’

“The second semester is too intensive without a break.”

“Spring Term has lost its original purpose. ’’

Estate Drovides scholarships The University of Indianapolis is pleased to acknowledge the receipt of more than $170,000 from the estate of M. Helen Roberts, Class of 1923. Miss Roberts provided these funds for the purpose of providing financial aid to needy students. As a result of Miss Roberts’ generosity, beginning with the upcoming school year there will be as many as eight Margaret Helen Roberts Scholars enrolled at the university. Helen Roberts was a resident of Rich Valley, Indiana, a member of the Rich Valley United Methodist Church, and a retired public school teacher. She was active as a musician in the community and on many occasions provided special music for churches in the general area surrounding Wabash County. She died in July 1937 at the age of ninetyone years. She is survived by her niece, Mary Kellie House, class of 1937.0

i Stewart & Loyd announces scholarship Stewart & Loyd, a Carmel-based firm that designs and sells business management and accounting software and computer systems, awarded its first $1,000 scholarship to Becki J. Smith, a senior accounting major from Ft. Wayne. Stewart & Loyd president Richard Davis ’73 serves on the U of I Board of Trustees.0

These and other concerns about the university’s 4-4-1 calendar have arisen perennially in various faculty councils for several years. The Curriculum Council, the university’s curriculum and academic policies body, set about to consider these concerns. The result was several calendar proposals, which benefitted from open hearings, college/ schools discussions, and hearings that included students. After debates in two university faculty meetings, a new calendar-to begin Semester I, 1990- was adopted by a decisive majority.

The essential provisions of the calendar are an earlier starting date (Tuesday, August 28 for 1990) with a week for finals; a spring break (March 4-8 for 1991); an earlier graduation (May 4 for 1991); and a spring term beginning immediately after graduation. Students

will be required to complete one of these spring terms for the bachelor’s degree. This requirement may be met by taking designated courses that fit the time-intensive format. Foreign travel will be among those courses. Students may take spring term courses in other years; however, only one will be required.

Running concurrently with the spring term will be Summer Session I (seven weeks), followed by Summer Session I1 (seven weeks).

A part of the calendar proposal adopted by the faculty is the provision that the total number of credit hours required for a bachelor’s degree be reduced from 128 to a more normative 124.0
