Bridget Guetle Wise, B.A. 2003, and Kevin Wise, B.A. 2003, each madehistory as student athletes. Bridget’s volleyball team was the first women’steam at Catholic University to make it to an NCAA tournament, whileKevin’s basketball team was the first and only team at the University to wina national championship. Fifteen years after leaving their college days behind, they were back on

campus in February to be honored during the Hall of Fame Inductionceremony — with their four children in tow.“Having the kids (ages 8, 6, 4, and 1) with us was incredible,” says Kevin.

“For the older ones, it was a chance to see us as more than Mom and Dad.They got to see that we actually played on teams ourselves, and we werepretty good at it.”Bridget and Kevin met as first-year students in Conaty Hall, where they

both lived. As athletes they crossed paths at the DuFour Center, their secondhome. They were soon a couple. “My college experience exceeded all of my expectations,” says Bridget,

who was a studio art major. “My teammates are my friends for life. Ourcoach was so dedicated to us and the program. I had the chance to succeedon the court, while also focusing in the classroom. And I fell in love withD.C. It’s such a great place to be a college student.”“And you met the love of your life,” adds Kevin. “Of course, that too,”

says Bridget, with a laugh.

Today the Wise family lives in Hoboken, N.J. Kevin works in financialmanagement in Manhattan, while Bridget, who worked in real estate forseveral years, is a stay-at-home parent. “It’s such a great community for youngfamilies,” she says. “The sidewalks are full of strollers. And it never gets oldseeing the Empire State Building lit up at night from across the river.”“When we first heard we were being inducted into the Hall of Fame at

the same time, we couldn’t believe it,” says Kevin. “I was at first a little bituncomfortable being inducted as an individual,” says Bridget, a CapitalAthletic Conference (CAC) rookie of the year and three-time first-team All-CAC performer. “For me it has always been about my team.”“The most meaningful part of the experience was that so many of my

former teammates came back for the ceremony,” she adds. “One even flewin from California. To have that support and validation from them was whatmattered most to me.” Being back together with his teammates was equally important to Kevin.

“Winning a national championship was an accomplishment and a memoryyou have with you always. It’s a bond you share with a group of people. When we get together and we start talking about the experience, it’s like itjust happened. That’s when it hits that it was such a big deal.” “I was blown away by the induction ceremony, it was so well done,” says

Bridget. “Any excuse to be back on campus is a good one, but this Hall ofFame weekend was one for the books.” — E.N.W.

ALUMNI CORNERIn Memoriam

Catholic University’s Internship Challenge, launched in fall 2017, invitedalumni, parents, and friends to participate. The goal of this joint initiativebetween the Office of Alumni Relations and the Office of Career Serviceswas to establish 200 new internships for current Catholic University students. Thanks to you, we reached our goal. Two hundred sixty-one internships

have been posted to date for learning opportunities in New York City, Boston,Baltimore, Houston, Nevada, Louisville, and the D.C. metro area, includingCapitol Hill. These include places like The New York Times (software engi-neering); Viacom (design); National Aquarium (exhibit developer, exhibitgraphic design, accounting, print digital graphic design, and more); BoozAllen Hamilton (corporate business services); Maryland Blue Crabs (mediainformation); and the Washington Nationals (e-commerce). But we’re not stopping! We look forward to adding more internships

this fall.

Internships benefit students in many ways. An internship:• Introduces a “real-world” perspective on a career. (How does an engineerspend his/her day? How much time is spent at a desk or the field?)

• Allows students to “test drive” a career. (Would I be more successful inmarketing or advertising? Am I more comfortable working with patientsor in a lab?)

• Gives students the chance to network in a professional setting.• Affords students access to possible mentors.• Often includes college credit or certification.• Introduces students to the field’s (or a company’s) culture and etiquette.(Are clients addressed by their first name? How are business meetingsrun? Are jeans appropriate for casual Friday?)

• Gives students the chance to build new skills.• Often gives students an advantage for future employment.

Do you have good leads on an internship that could make all the difference for a student? Even better, can you offer an internship? Contact us!
