Message FroM the PrinciPalOn behalf of the admin-
istration, faculty, staff and school board members of Shamokin Area School Dis-trict, I would like to wel-come all alumni to the annu-al meeting of the Shamokin Area High School Alumni Association.
This year, like those of the past, our students con-tinue to represent Shamokin Area in all facets of educa-tion. Academically, our cur-riculum continues to evolve and challenge students with new and up-to-date cours-es. We brought the school newspaper, “The Signal,” back with huge success. It can be viewed from our dis-trict website. Our Advanced Placement students and staff are coming off their best year in school history. This success has led to a 25% increase in AP student enrollment. Our students also continue to participate
dual enrollment courses at Bloomsburg University, Lu-zerne County Community College, and Lackawanna College.
Musically, our programs continue to be one of the best! Many of our music students continue to com-pete and qualify for district, regional, and state music festivals. Competition band had a successful first sea-son competing in TOB open class. Four students quali-fied each for PMEA District 8 Orchestra and District Chorus; one student from each is moving on to Region IV-V Orchestra and Region IV Chorus. Six students qualified for PMEA District 8 Band. For the first time in over 10 years, a student has qualified for the PMEA Dis-trict 8 Jazz Chorus. We also have new course offerings in music recording technology and beginning guitar.
In the area of athletics, both our team and individu-al athletes continue to work hard to excel in their sport. In the fall we had a cross country state qualifier; foot-ball and girls soccer both qualified for PIAA Districts. Our winter sports have been exciting as we returned a five-time state champion in swimming. The competitive spirit team won their second straight District 4 Champi-onships and both boys and girls basketball have qual-ified for districts. Wres-tling won its historic 700th dual meet. Spring sports are ready to begin, coming off a tremendously successful 2019 season for all sports.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Shamokin Area High School Alumni Association for your support. I recognize the hard work and effort put forth by the association each year,
President’s Message

Greetings and Welcome Alumni,Do you know what it
means to have a heritage? By definition, “heritage” means to have a tradition, legacy, that which is acquired from a pre-decessor.
As children and youth from the coal region, we had ances-tors who left us a legacy. They were a people who worked in the coal mines, factories, shops, textiles, education and many other occupations. They worked hard and played hard. They did what they needed to do to provide for themselves and their families. When called to duty, they went off to war to protect their land and families. Sadly, some never returned to the region they cherished and loved.
As Shamokin Area Alum-ni, we also have a legacy that was passed down to us from that first group of 35 graduates
that met on the night of May 7, 1884. They created the tradi-tion that we as alumni celebrate today by meeting once a year for a reunion. Little did they know they were providing a tradition that would grow into an annual event with a mem-bership of over 20,700 alumni. They were the true pioneers that gave us a reason to meet each year, to welcome new classes and reward excellence.
There are two lasting mem-ories that I acquired growing up as a student of Shamokin Area High School. First, I began my education in the 60s when there was Shamokin High School and Coal Township High School. As I counted the different loca-tions for homerooms and class-es, I realized that my education was provided in nine different buildings spread across the city. As a result, I was no longer spending time with the same
kids from my neighborhood. There were other kids from across town that I never met or knew were there, whichspawned new friendships and lasting relationships. More importantly I learned how we were different, which provid-ed the preparation for me to go beyond the secure home town walls. The second memory was the teachers that spent their time and shared of their wisdom and knowledge to provide the quality education that we have (continued on page 13)

We believe we may be one of the oldest continuing active high school alumni associations in the country, our first class having graduated in 1877 and the alumni association originating in 1883. In order for the organization to continue to operate successfully, it needs active involvement from its members.
Many of you in the area could become active in the operation of the association. It is getting more difficult to find new leaders to serve, and the executive committee has no idea who might be interested in serving as an officer or on a committee.
If you are interested in getting involved or would like to suggest an individual who would be interested in helping, please contact any officer of the association. You may want to consider attending one of our three annual meetings (Fall, Winter and Spring) to see how you can help. Officer contact information, meeting dates and times are posted on our website: http://www.indians.k12.pa.us/alumni.
Inspired Thoughts What inspired you while attending Shamokin
Area High School? Was it a teacher, fellow student or an event? We all have many worthwhile experiences to share. If you would like to share your thoughts to inspire others, feel free to send information to John Clutcher. Your note could be placed on the alumni website, put in a future newsletter or shared at our annual banquet. Limit your entry to around 250 words. The Alumni Association reserves the right to edit entries based upon content and length. Include your name and year of graduation, which would be shared publicly with the entry.

Scholarship Information
In 2019, 16 scholarships were given ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 per year for 4 years. These scholarships – provided by both the Shamokin and Coal Township Alumni Associations - are awarded based on the results of an annual exam. This exam is administered by the high school Guidance Office. The exam is open to all senior students and is given one time only during the school day in the spring.

all received over the years. I am sure there were times when their efforts seemed futile to get us to do homework, study for tests or just pay attention, but they did it to help mold and prepare us for our future life experiences (even when the teacher was your brother - thanks Pete!). There were some teachers who exemplified a lifetime of dedication and service to our alma mater as they themselves were alumni, educators, and Presidents of our Association.
Once again, we will gather together as Shamokin Area Alumni to celebrate our 137th reunion and the memories that are special to each one of us. Masser’s Banquet Hall in Paxinos will be the location for our time together to en-joy dinner and the evening’s activities. We will celebrate the graduates of the class of 2020 with the highlight of the night being the announcement of this year’s scholarship winners. Last year’s presentations were exciting for all as nine SAHS Alumni Association and seven Coal Town-ship Alumni Association scholarships, totaling $45,200 per year, were awarded to our graduating seniors. Each of the scholarships are for four years. Beginning last year, the R. Thomas Lynch Scholarship was also awarded to a graduate planning to attend a vocational or technical school. This award covers the length of time the student is enrolled, with a maximum of four years.
As alumni members, there are two ways you can play a significant role in ensuring the continuation of the reunion that was started 137 years ago by its founding members. First, there are many committees that need extra hands to do the planning from year to year. If you could invest a small part of your time, that would provide the ongoing life blood to ensure the existence of your alumni association. The sec-ond item would be to donate to the educational fund and/or general fund. This would allow alumni expenses to be funded and the continuation of awarding scholarships to our future graduates of the Shamokin Area High School.
I invite all Shamokin Area alumni and guests to attend
(Continued from page 1)the 137th Shamokin Area High School Alumni Association Banquet, which will be held Saturday, May 23rd, 2020 (Me-morial Day Weekend) at Masser’s Banquet Hall, Paxinos, PA. It will be a time to reminisce about the past with dear friends, celebrate the present relationships, and look for-ward to the future of those classes yet to come.
In closing, it has been my honor and privilege to serve as your Alumni Association President this past year. One that I would never have expected. Alumni, thank you for entrusting me to carry the torch for this prestigious organi-zation. I also want to thank all the Shamokin Area Alumni Association committee members for continuing on in their roles and planning the reunions year after year. You provide the energy and endurance to make the reunions a success. The spirit of the Alumni Association is captured in our Alma Mater, “With devotion deep and true,” – “We’ll always be loyal and true!”
Best Wishes,Jeffrey F. Schlader, Class of 1973

prayer. Entertainment will take place on the stage until 5PM.
From 10AM to 5PM, vendors and artisans will line Market Street and offer ethnic food, children’s activities, artwork exhibits, and Shamokin memorabilia. Other attractions will include strolling musicians, juggling, a butterfly tent exhibit, a historical Shamokin horse-drawn wagon tour, and a magical white pumpkin horse-drawn carriage ride with the princess of your choice. Both the historical and princess carriage rides are $5.00 per person and start at 11AM. Two train tours are available: 11AM going eastward toward Mt. Carmel, and 2PM going west of Shamokin. Both excursions will leave the lot between Market and 8th Streets. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased at the train.
There will be two cemetery tours with re-enactors, starting at 12:30PM and 5PM. A shuttle will be available at the festival if a ride is needed to the cemetery.
The Shamokin High School building will be open, featuring a tribute exhibit to the late Garth Hall in the gallery. There will be self-guided tours and movies of
1939 and 1989 parades playing in the quaint auditorium with its lighted glass ceiling. Take the marble steps and enjoy the stained glass window that proudly displays the letters SHS - a great photo opportunity for any one who graduated from this beautiful building. Some of the original brass door knobs bearing the letters SHS still proudly adorn the doors in the building.
Above the library on Independence Street, visit the museum and enjoy more trips back in time as you peruse the memorabilia and see a replica of a miniature coal breaker. Additional attractions will be available throughout the day.
Don’t forget to stop at the information booth at the corner of Arch and Market Streets to pick up your free festival brochures. There also will be memorabilia of Edgewood Park, Shamokin, Knoebels, F&S hats, books, shirts, Matinee Memories and much more for purchase.
