PrESidEnt’S MESSAgE

Dear alumni and friends,

A considerable part of any university’s success depends on the support and level of engagement from its alumni. From the very first opportunity I have had in meeting you, I have been heartened to discover that your support for, and your spirit of engagement with your University, is very much thriving.

When you volunteer your time to sit on interview panels for the recruitment of students; actively involving yourself in recruiting the brightest for the University, you add a new dimension to the notion of giving back to your alma mater. When you return to NTU to serve on advisory boards, contribute as guest speakers, or serve as Class Agents, you help advance the mission of your alma mater and strengthen the NTU alumni community. When you contribute to the cause for undergraduate education, you open up a world of possibilities for our future alumni. In nurturing emerging talent, you are instrumental in helping a new generation pursue dreams and materialise potential.

Today, the University has alumni volunteers from across the world, spanning a broad spectrum of the University’s alumni body, who exemplify this spirit of deep engagement with their alma mater. The University has benefitted from your dedication and your generous contributions of time, talent and resources. On behalf of NTU, I would like to express my deepest appreciation for you, and ask for your continual support for the University.

As the University’s key stakeholders, alumni have the power to advance the cause of their alma mater. Your participation – in all forms – helps to shape the future of your University. Your feedback and continual engagement is crucial to the future success of NTU.

I want to continue strengthening this interaction with you and I want to meet you more often at the various alumni events organised by the Alumni Affairs Office. You can do a lot for us. You can be our advisors. We will make you proud of NTU and we can do that by increasing the profile and international standing of the University. Vice versa, the mark you make in society cements our long term reputation as a great global university. You are NTU’s best ambassadors. And we at NTU, will continue to build mutually rewarding and enriching life-long relationships, with you.

Alumni AffAirs Office 2011 in review

2011 has been a fulfilling year for the Alumni Affairs Office (AAO) as we continued to extend our reach locally and globally to actively engage our growing alumni family.

The year began with an appreciation dinner in recognition of the enduring spirit of volunteerism from our 3,200-strong alumni volunteers. Of these, 193 were newly-appointed Class Agents who had joined the ranks of 1,597 others, who play the indispensable role of helping AAO connect more effectively with its alumni.

AAO believes in the importance of fostering a strong sense of belonging in its alumni. In July, close to 11,000 new graduates were welcomed into the NTU alumni family and reminded of the key roles they play as the University’s new ambassadors. Demonstrating true alumni spirit, the largest graduating cohort in NTU’s history broke the campaign record in their Graduation Class Gift, with four out of every five graduates making a gift to their alma mater. In August, this group of new alumni were further embraced into our alumni community at a Welcome Class Party specially held to celebrate their transition from students to alumni.

dirECtOr’S MESSAgE

We have a rapidly expanding alumni community comprising close to 158,000 alumni spread over 114 countries. It is of crucial importance that they can stay connected at all times from every corner of the globe. As such, we continued to reach out to our alumni through the setting-up of local and overseas chapters. Last year alone saw the launches of eight overseas chapters in Heilongjiang, Gansu, Guizhou, Anhui, Jiangxi, Inner Mongolia, Hainan and USA-West. Locally, four more Alumni Associations were established, namely: the NTU Welfare Services Club Alumni Association, the NTU Chinese Medicine Alumni Association, the NTU Hall 7 Alumni Association, and the NTU School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences Alumni Association.

To ensure that our alumni are meaningfully engaged, AAO organises close to 40 events and activities every year. Designed with our alumni in mind, these programmes serve to enhance and enrich their lives and connect them to their peers and alma mater. To increase alumni’s connectivity to their University and encourage alumni engagement, AAO has in place a variety of communication channels to deliver up-to-date information about NTU’s latest developments and projects all year round.

Moving forward, we are determined to work in even closer collaboration with you all. I would like to thank all who have worked with AAO, for their invaluable support and unwavering commitment. Together, we look forward to further and deeper engagement with our alumni community.

AAO believes in the importance of cultivating life-long relationships between alumni and their alma mater. It begins by establishing relations with its alumni as early as their first days at NTU, when they are still students. Outstanding alumni are invited by AAO to NTU’s University’s Freshmen Orientation, to share their professional expertise and life experiences on a variety of topics with the new students.

Student cultivation in the form of talks and presentations by AAO give students the chance to discover the important roles they can play in supporting their University when they become alumni. AAO gives talks to final-year students, on how they can stay connected to NTU, in their new roles as alumni.

Combined class reunions provide the perfect backdrop for reconnecting with your old friends and making new ones.

To ensure that we fully engage our diverse body of alumni, a variety of events and activities specially designed with alumni’s varying interests in mind are held throughout the year. Below are some of these events.

Every year, AAO organises a major homecoming event for alumni to return to campus. The event usually kicks off in the afternoon, with two forums (one English, one Chinese) for alumni. Following these, a sumptuous reception lunch awaits and a campus tour is available for those who wish to revisit campus grounds. The event culminates in Alumni Night – a ceremony where NTU gives recognition to alumni who have made significant contributions to their alma mater and community.

reuNIONS

Combined class reunions are a fun and vibrant way of meeting up again with the friend you have not seen for years and those you stay in constant touch with. AAO facilitates and organises ten-year combined class reunions annually to ensure that everyone has a chance to reconnect!

DISTINguISHeD ALuMNI FOruM

A key event organised by AAO several times a year is the Distinguished Alumni Forum (DAF). With discussions from alumni speakers for alumni, the DAF seeks to engage alumni with interesting and relevant topics that will help them in their professional or personal lives.

The first DAF for 2011 was a ‘Post-Budget 2011’ forum which brought alumni together to share their viewpoints on the nation’s budget. The second saw four alumni speakers sharing their views on achieving work-life harmony, in ‘CEO of me – Energising Work, Engaging Life’. Two other DAFs were held in the same year, in conjunction with the Annual Homecoming event; an English forum titled ‘New Media in Today’s World’, and a Chinese forum titled ‘创业,投资,理财’.

The NTU Family Day is held every year to foster family ties and community bonding. On 21 May 2011, 500 alumni, staff, student and their families turned up at Bottle Tree Park for a day of family bonding. All present were kept busy with ‘longkang’ fishing and prawning activities.

NTu SPOrTS FIeSTA

The much-loved, much-anticipated annual sporting event is held to give alumni who love sports yet another reason to come back to campus, to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. About 250 participants turned up at the NTU Sports and Recreation Centre, for a dose of competitive but friendly sporting spirit on 9 July 2011. The games played that day included badminton, table-tennis and tennis doubles, 3-on-3 basketball, 5-a-side soccer and 4 x 100 metres relay run.

Effective communication is essential to maintaining and strengthening alumni relations. At AAO, we ensure that our alumni stay connected to their alma mater through the different communication channels we have established for them.

COMMuNICATION CHANNeLSThe NTuLink Magazine

As the key publication connecting alumni to their alma mater, the NTULink magazine offers alumni the latest news and developments on the University and alumni fronts. Issued free to all NTU alumni, the quarterly publication serves to keep alumni of all ages abreast of the most recent happenings at NTU. Featuring the latest campus initiatives, alumni news, and personality interviews, the magazine also encourages alumni contributions in the form of opinion pieces or class notes. Through the latter, alumni can connect with their former classmates by sharing with them their latest news, their travel adventures, motivational stories about their professional or personal life, or even new additions to their families. Class notes also serves as a platform from which alumni have successfully used to reconnect with their long-lost classmates.

ClassACT

Every month, our alumni also receive an e-zine ClassACT, which keeps them updated on their alma mater’s achievements, news and upcoming activities. A ‘Career and Courses’ section in the e-zine informs them of upcoming professional and personal development courses and possible career opportunities.

Happenings

Alumni are kept informed of the events AAO organises for them, through our monthly emailer, Happenings.

AAO Website

With a bilingual website, AAO hopes to reach out to its growing number of alumni the world over. Through this website, alumni can discover ways of staying connected with their alma mater, find out more about benefits and privileges for them, keep up-to-date with upcoming events and activities that may interest them, view photos of their classmates participating in past events of the University, access past issues of publications and more!

Social media platforms

Alumni are encouraged to stay connected via AAO’s social media platforms. Through Facebook, alumni can connect with other NTU alumni and AAO through the NTU Alumni Network page. Alumni can also follow AAO activities, news and events through AAO’s Twitter page at @alumniNTU. With LinkedIn, alumni may connect with other alumni through a professional networking platform to widen their career opportunities and broaden their professional network.
