Hello Altrusans:
As I was thinking of my theme for the year I wrote down the following possibilities:
AltrusansThe Nike Slogan Just Do it Movers and ShakersPaving the WayMake it HappenDream Big and Succeed (this was a close second)Get R done (one of my favorites)
But I thought about us planting bulbs in Cerise, cleaning up trash on the highway, teach-ing our teen girls to be future leaders, supporting adult literacy, encouraging literacywith our young people, support to our cancer survivors, the friendships that we buildbetween each other and the 9,508 hours of community service, and I decided that my
theme for the year is Altrusa Building a Stronger Community.
My Goals for the year are to create a new service project, increase communication withour existing and new members, increase fun member activities, develop leadership ac-tivities, have a terrific conference, and most importantly have fun within our weeklymeetings.
Diane Winger and her golf committee started the year off with a bang. With a commit-tee of 13, beautiful silent auction items, and 10 teams competing in the tournament, over $5000 was raised for the Club. Thanks to Diane for chair ing a committee that shehad no past experience with and her team for coming together and making the event sosuccessful.
With all of us working together I know we can build a stronger community.

On Sunday, May 30, Members of Altrusa's International Relations Committee and representatives from MontroseHigh School presented Greg Mortenson with checks totaling $1,840.91 for Pennies for Peace. This donation con-sisted of contributions from the MHS Student Council ($250), a Pennies for Peacefundraising drive at the high school
($440.91), a concert to benefit Pennies for Peace ($150), a donation from Altrusa International of Montrose ($500),and an individual donation ($500). Since our community's first Pennies for Peaceevent, a program co-sponsored byAltrusa of Montrose and the Montrose Library in January 2008, approximately $7,250 has been raised and donated toMortenson'sCentral Asia Instituteby the Montrose community (counting only those donations reported to Al-trusa).
Dur ing our visit, MHS teacher Russell Evans described the two "Day in the Dirt" events at MHS he had organized(one in March 2008, the other in April 2010) where a number of teachers took their classes outside to simulate the
teaching conditions in villages without even a simple building to use asa school. The students scratched their lessons in the dirt with sticksand talked about the many privileges children in this country have andsometimes take for granted.
Mortenson was very impressed with the concept of the "Day in theDirt," as was Pennies for Peace Director, Christiane Leitinger. Theyrequested that Evans organize another "Day in the Dirt" next fall sothat they can obtain videos and photos, since they would like to in-clude this awareness-raising event in future publications and in theironline curriculum suggestions.
Mortenson provided free autographed copies of several of his booksto our Montrose group, and signed the books we had brought with us.
