Overview of the program

• Ten stipends of up to $1,000 will be awarded to faculty who are interested in incorporating alternative texts into their classroom

• Goal: to reduce textbook costs for students

• Alternative textbooks include:

• Open textbooks like OpenStax

• Library subscription materials

• Other free resources

• Any combination of the resources above

Overview of the program• Proposals are accepted until March 1, 2016

• Awarded faculty will by notified by April 1, 2016

• The pilot program is geared towards Fall 2016 classes

• Funded faculty will have librarian support to assist with identifying potential course materials and/or copyright questions

• Awarded faculty agree to provide written feedback on their experiences of using alternative textbooks and share their experience in a panel presentation during Spring 2017 (if possible).

• New textbooks written as a result of the program be deposited in a repository

Eligibility

• Full time ECU faculty member teaching during 2016-2017

• Undergraduate and graduate courses are accepted

• Courses may be distance education or on-campus

• Extra weight is given to classes with 100 students or more, DE courses, and/or ECU Foundation courses

Selection Criteria• 100-300 word narrative describing your project goals, student outcomes, and

interest in using alternative texts

• Total number of students/cost savings for students

• Adoption of course materials by the start of fall 2016

• Course offered during fall 2016

• Creative Commons (CC) license for created materials

• Use of library subscription materials (if applicable)

• Sustainability of project after the awarded semester
