Chairman’s Letter
On behalf of the Staff and Board of Directors, I am pleased to present the 2012 annual financial report. The report provides a comprehensive picture of the Tom Joyner Foundation’s finances for the 2012 fiscal year and a snapshot of important issues concerning our future.
The Tom Joyner Foundation has navigated its way through these uncertain economic times to provide student scholars at Historically Black Colleges and Universities critical assistance to help attain their college degrees. We have a simple philosophy here at the Foundation, which is grounded in our vision statement that says “all students deserve the chance to attend college so they can succeed in life.” We know that getting a college education means that every student has the opportunity to get a job and make more money than if they didn’t go to college.
At the Foundation, we believe HBCUs are helping students become major contributors to all parts of society in the U.S. and around the world. We know we can play an influential role in changing lives. We know that HBCUs are special places that shape, mold and inspire the next generation.
Thanks to all those supporters around the country who have dropped dollars and checks in the mail – and more than ever last year, donated electronically. Your contributions to the Tom Joyner Foundation make me smile every time I visit with HBCU students and alumni who are grateful that we are steadfast to our commitment to this nation’s great treasures – HBCUs. Yours truly,
Tom Joyner Chairman
President’s Letter
To Our Valued Supporters:
The Tom Joyner Foundation is extremely thankful to its donors who continue to share their love and passion for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
We devoted much of 2012 building our presence on the Internet with our website – TomJoynerFoundation.org – and via social media, primarily on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Our time and efforts made a difference. Throughout the year, we significantly increased our website traffic, our followers on social media and established sound footing to grow our online donations. We are connecting with our partner schools, current students, alumni and friends of HBCUs in more ways than ever.
Even with this online push, we remained committed to the “Schools of the Month” program and helping keep black males in college through our Hercules Scholarship.
Fifty-two Hercules Scholars from around the country with tremendous backgrounds were awarded $1,500. The scholarship is a tribute to our late Board Member and my Grandfather Hercules Joyner.
For the 14th Annual Fantastic Voyage™, nearly 3,000 guests enjoyed another star-studded, Ultimate Party with a PurposeTM that sailed to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Nassau and Coco Cay, Bahamas. Entertainment featured Queen Latifah, Fantasia, Chante Moore, Keith Sweat, SWV, Boyz II Men, and dozens of other performers who provided our passengers lifelong memories on board Royal Caribbean International’s Navigator of the Seas.
Despite the great challenges many of our HBCUs face today, the Tom Joyner Foundation believes that keeping students in HBCUs is critical to ensuring that we continue to have diverse leaders of this country in classrooms, executive offices, state houses, Congress, hospitals and science labs.
Thank you for your support!
Yours truly,
Thomas E. Joyner, Jr.President and CEOTom Joyner Foundation

Full Ride Scholarship
The Tom Joyner Foundation’s first Full Ride Scholar, Britney Wilson of Brooklyn, New York, graduated in 2012 with the highest honors from Howard University in Washington DC.
The native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Wilson is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Gamma Chapter of the District of Columbia Howard University, with a major in English, and is now enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania law school. She maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average during her time at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and distinguished herself with many accomplishments. “Words cannot express how grateful I am for what the Foundation has provided me,” Wilson said in an interview aired on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. “I’m on my way to law school in the fall and this journey would not have been possible without you guys.
During her years at Howard, Wilson became a conscientious scholar and active in all facets of the community. She has been president of Howard University’s Sterling Brown English Society and was a 1st place winner in the undergraduate division of the S. Randolph Edmonds Young Scholars Competition where she presented a paper entitled, “Every Woman in No Man’s Land: Triumphs of the Modern Black Woman at the Expense of the Black Male Character in the Works of Lynn Nottage”. She also is a former columnist for The Hilltop, the university’s campus newspaper, and worked diligently to advocate the rights for physically challenged students on campus.
“I’m a black female and disabled, and I take my representation as all three groups very seriously,” Wilson said. “You just have to know that you can do anything you can put your mind to. For everyone out there who wants to help other black scholars attend other HBCUs, support the Tom Joyner Foundation to continue its legacy of helping talented youth attend HBCUS.”
The Tom Joyner Foundation chose Wilson in 2008 as its first winner of a “Full Ride Scholarship” that has covered her full tuition and stipends for room and board (on-campus only) and books.

Paul Quinn Donor Bridge Day with The Tom Joyner Foundation
The Tom Joyner Foundation raised funds for Paul Quinn College’s “We Over Me” Community Garden as part of the Communities Foundation of Texas’ “North Texas Giving Day” online fundraising drive. Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and founder/chairman of the Foundation, State Sen. Royce West (District 23), and Michael Sorrell, President of Paul Quinn, were among the local VIPs in attendance.
The Tom Joyner Foundation hosted a “Taste of Paul Quinn” on the college’s campus featuring produce from the school’s community gardens and recipes using the herbs and vegetables featuring the culinary skills of Celebrity Chef Tiffany Derry, who demonstrated her craft in creating gourmet foods for the event.
The partnership with Paul Quinn is part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to ensure the future of HBCUs. The “We Over Me” Community Garden, located on two acres of what used to be the college’s football field, is setting out to provide affordable and healthy food options in Southern Dallas, serves as a model for urban redevelopment and promotes healthy eating and living in an area known as a food desert.

Timeless, Exquisite…. Masterpieces of Art
On the cover...Front art title: “Reading, Writing & Arithmetic” – From the personal collection of Tom Joyner
About the artist: Deborah Shedrick’s work is vibrant, colorful, and full of texture. Utilizing a palette knife, rollers and assorted objects, she shapes color and builds texture in rhythmic patterns and brilliant eruptions. Stylistically she combines realism and abstraction as she forges a unique and distinctive expression that has found tremendous resonance with her audience. She lets the vivid tints take over, leaving her figures elongated and suggested in her vertical canvases with some collaged materials.
Shedrick lives and loves art. Honing her artistic skills in 1986 through workshops with other prominent artists has developed into a career. Her artwork is being used nationwide in hotels, on book covers, television shows, and for fundraisers. Articles have been written about her work in several newspapers and magazines. She defines her paintings as free-style, uniquely her own. Her passion for art shines through her work. She captures the nuance of a moment, with the celebration of color and energy. Her artwork strikes a harmonious cord from a universal perspective and she is part of collections throughout the United States and abroad.
Shedrick states, “As I create, I reflect on the Master, the Author of Creativity, God. I share with you the spirituality of which my art is born. Hear the art speak to you of love, inner peace, strength and joy.”
