Bowe, a 33-year-old former heavyweight boxing champion, pleaded not guilty to assault charges and paid $2,500 in bail before being released. Bowe's lawyer, Robert Altchiler, said outside the courthouse in Hempstead, N.Y., that he and his client ''adamantly deny that things took place the way this young woman says.'' A judge issued a temporary order of protection, ordering Bowe to stay away from his wife and her two sons. Altchiler said the couple was splitting up after a ''very brief marriage.'' Bowe was arrested after officers arrived at the couple's Upper Brookville home on Long Island and found his wife cut and bruised, the police report said. She told the police her husband had twisted her arm, struck her head and slapped her, the report said, and when she tried to run away, he grabbed her, dragged her and threatened her life. Bowe was sentenced to 30 days in prison last February after the boxer took his first wife, Judy Bowe, and his five children from their home in Charlotte, N.C. He pleaded guilty to a domestic violence charge as part of a plea deal. A judge sentenced Bowe to 30 days, citing the boxer's head injuries during his years in the ring as the reason for leniency. Bowe, 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, won his first 31 fights then dethroned Evander Holyfield in 1992 and earned the title of undisputed heavyweight champion. A year later, Holyfield won a rematch.
