FROM THE HEADMASTER

Welcome to the Spring Term edition of Alta Peto. It has been another busy and highly productive term for the boys, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 some events had to be suspended. Reflected in these pages are some of the marvellous events and activities in which the boys have had the opportunity to be involved. Particular highlights this term include the Spring Concert, the Year 1 Music Festival, World Book Day, and our numerous environmental initiatives driven forward by our Eco Committee. We also celebrate the Scholarship achievements of Year 8. Please note that as the Common Entrance (CE) exams were cancelled this year, no CE prizes were awarded by senior schools, which is most disappointing for our boys. I do hope that you will enjoy reading about all of the boys’ cultural, academic and sporting achievements and activities over the course of these pages. ECO COMMITTEE REPORT

Last term we launched a scheme to collect milk bottle tops as a House Competition. There was a tremendous response, with over 10,000 bottle tops collected.

The House results were as follows:1st Nelson 4,4152nd Raleigh 2,4613rd Drake 2,3294th Grenville 993

These bottle tops were taken to be recycled and the company which took them will turn them into sports pitches. In return they will give a contribution to Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. So not only is it effective recycling, but also good for charity! There have also been many corks collected. Some of the Year 3 and 4 Eco Committee members counted them and by the end of January we had collected over 1,500! A huge thank you to everyone for their contributions.

HEADMASTER’S COMMENDATION

Hearty congratulations to Saahir Kapoor (Year 6) on his award of a Headmaster’s Commendation in the presence of his parents in Assembly. Just before Christmas, Saahir designed and made a marvellous Random Act of Kindness Advent Calendar, which he brought into school. The calendar took him many hours to make and his efforts provided fine examples of kindness and compassion.

HISTORY TALK

We were very honoured to welcome Squadron Leader Bob Tuxford AFC TP RAF (retd) to talk about his career in the RAF and his role in the Falklands War. Bob had joined the RAF when he was 18 years old and rose to become a Test Pilot and a Squadron Leader, but it is his role in the Falklands War for which he is most remembered. Bob spoke of his long career and about Operation ‘Black Buck One’ where he flew a Victor K2 tanker alongside the Vulcan bomber during its raid on the Argentine-held Stanley Airfield. The talk attracted a large crowd with our boys, parents, staff members, SHOBS and friends from the local community, including members from the Royal Star and Garter, joining us for the talk. Bob said that our boys ‘were a credit to the School, and asked some very pertinent questions; confirmation indeed that they showed a genuine interest in the subject.’

TUTOR SESSION BUDDY MEET UP

In mid-January in their tutor sessions, the Year 3 boys enjoyed the chance to spend some time with their Year 8 buddies. Some of them engaged in quizzes together, others played board games or just took the time to catch up on what they had been doing so far this term. It was lovely to see how these relationships have blossomed over the year and how much the boys from both Year groups enjoyed spending the time together. For the Year 7 boys it was a chance to see how this relationship will work ahead of them taking up the role of buddy next year.

LAMDA RESULTS

Well done to the following boys who were awarded with their Grade one Duologue Level One LAMDA Acting certificates:

MeritAyush Agrawal, Ronny Dogra, Theo O’Donnell, Eric Taylor and Walter Zhang

DistinctionCharlie Babb, Ben Clarke, Christopher Crowley, George Day, Oliver Forbes, Stein Mackintosh, Hamish MacLennan, Stein Mackintosh, Felix Samuels, Piers Samuels, Max Snead and Joseph Stankovski

CHARITY ASSEMBLY

We were delighted to welcome to SHS representatives from the British Red Cross and the Marine Conservation Society. Each charity gave a presentation on their work and the projects that would be supported by the monies raised by the SHS community. At the end of the Assembly, with the help of two of our Community and Sustainability Prefects, Arran Blevins and Rafe Buxton, we presented a cheque to each charity, drawn to the impressive sum of £8478. This money had been raised at last year’s Sponsored Run and the charities were thrilled to receive the funds. The Marine Conservation Society stayed on to deliver some workshops for the Year 5 and Year 6 boys, focusing on sustainability and the importance of the oceans to our planet.

We presented a cheque to each charity, drawn to the impressive sum of £8,478.

YEAR 8 MUSIC CONCERT

Towards the end of January, Year 8 came together in force to present the Year 8 Music Concert. Many a talented musician was on display as the evening passed, producing many memorable moments and performances. The Year 8s have particular strengths, especially in singing and piano playing, and we heard a few notable performances from Harry Gregor, Eric Taylor and Joseph Stankovski. Hari Stewart, Oliver Casebourne and Saahan Kapoor teamed up for a group performance of ‘When I Grow Up’ from the musical ‘Matilda’. Elsewhere on the musical spectrum, boys displayed excellent skills on the violin, drums and guitar, as well as many other disciplines. Max Baker managed to get the audience grooving along with a piece on the drums called ‘Geek’, while Hamish MacLennan’s sobering theme of ‘Last of the Mohicans’ proved a fitting contrast.

The standard of group singing in Year 8 is at an all-time high. First the Senior Voices sang a beautiful version of The Beatles’ ‘Here Comes the Sun’. This was followed by the whole Year coming together for two iconic songs: ‘Africa’ by Toto and ‘Don’t Look back in Anger’, made famous by Oasis. The volume and commitment to the songs lifted the hall, accompanied by the brilliance of Mr Jani, Mr Nugent and Mr Thomas. This was a fabulous way to mark the Year 8’s musical achievements in their last Year group Concert at Shrewsbury House. Well done Year 8!

SHS FENCERS AT THE SURREY YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Well done to Josh Jacobs (Year 6), Stein Mackintosh (Year 5) and Henry Turnbull (Year 8), who competed in the Surrey Youth Championships. In the U12 event, Josh finished with a bronze medal after knocking out the 2nd seed 10/8. Henry competed in the U14 event and finished a very creditable 6th place, considering there were three England top-ranked fencers in his event. Stein also won a bronze medal in the U10 boys’ foil. Congratulations all!

QUIZ CLUB GENERAL KNOWLEDGE COMPETITION AREA HEAT

A Shrewsbury House quiz team, comprising of Hugo Norris (Year 3), Max Snead (Year 4), Oliver Starling (Year 5) and Leo Ridge (Year 6), took part in the national heats of a general knowledge quiz hosted by Holy Cross School. All boys completed quizzes in form time and gained top scores in their Year group to gain places in the team. There were many teams competing from local schools and competition was fierce. Shrewsbury House performed very well and while we did not qualify for the final, we did put up a good show, answering some tricky questions! It was also great to see boys from different Year groups at Shrewsbury House coming together to create a focused and cohesive team.

M:TECH CERTIFICATES

Mr Doble presented a number of boys with their M:Tech certificates in Assembly for the work they had produced in this popular after-school club. Congratulations also to Benjamin Paul (Year 7), who was awarded the Gold Disc Award for excellent work.

LATIN SPELLING BEE COMPETITION

In early January, Year 8 boys took part in what is now a termly event: the Year 8 Latin Spelling Bee (spring term edition). The difficulty of the test is graded according to level. Students have 20 seconds to answer each question before the quiz moves resolutely on.

Results were impressive and the winners were as follows:1st Leo Saarinen2nd Hugh Jacobs3rd Reuben Malet de Carteret

Many congratulations to Leo on being ‘2019–20 Spring Term Latin Spelling Bee Champion’ and to all the students for producing some excellent results.

JANUARY SPORTS REPORT

January saw the boys throw themselves wholeheartedly into the rugby season. It was fitting then to start the year celebrating the success of recent Shrewsbury House Old Boy (SHOB), Jack Musk – who represented Harlequins in the ‘Big Game’ at Twickenham in front of 75,000 people! With the full transition from football complete, we said goodbye to the ‘animal’ mixed-ability teams and hello to the ‘clubs’ rugby teams: less Piranhas, more Saracens!

The SHS Senior boys kicked off the term with matches the first day back and it was full steam ahead from there, with all boys in all Year groups taking the opportunity to play rugby for their school teams. January also marked the first SHS Rugby Festivals and we remain proud of the wonderful hosting and opportunity we provide for others. Congratulations as well to the U9A and U10A SHS rugby teams, who performed so admirably. To be part of a large event hosted on the All Weather Surface on Ditton Road in support of SHS pupils, and hundreds of others from partner schools, is to see the whole SHS team at its best. Progress sits at the heart of our motivation in support of the boys and so many of the rugby events in January bore witness to the boys’ success in this area. January continued with SHS boys in competition six days a week and some wonderful, and improving, rugby was enjoyed by all.

In the midst of all this rugby action some of the SHS Senior boys braved the winter weather and took to the water. Kingston Rowing Club again provided the necessary support of our pupils in their desire to develop skills in a (for most) new sport. A combination of land-training and time on the Thames has seen these boys improve well.

It was great to welcome back ski racing to our programme – the boys made great progress this month (and for the remaining of the term) at Sandown Ski.

The SHS Swim Team started to shine in January! There was great drama at the Parkside gala event and a wonderful early evening of high-quality swimming – one in which the SHS team led throughout. Unfortunately, or fortunately if you consider how valuable the lesson was, one of the SHS relay teams was disqualified following one of the change-overs. The resultant penalty proved the difference between first and second. Regardless, the boys swam brilliantly and won 10 of the 25 races, and all involved should be very proud.

HOUSE RUGBY

We sadly missed the opportunity of the whole-school House Rugby event due to weather conditions, but those that attended the Year 3 and 4 House matches on Valentine’s Day will remember fondly a wonderful afternoon of sport. A huge credit must go to all our Year 3 and Year 4 rugby players – heroes all and certainly some budding stars for the future!

TEMPLE WINNERS

The Year 5 boys produced a wonderful array of miniature Greek temples over Christmas and their efforts were on display in the New Block corridor, for boys, staff and visitors to admire. The standard was outstanding, indicative of much model-building toil over the holidays. There was a wide variety of material used to make the temples and a great deal of resourcefulness and creativity on display. Selecting the eventual winners was a difficult matter – well done to these boys but also to all those who took part.

YEAR 3 SCIENCE AND ART TRIP TO WISLEY GARDENS

Year 3 enjoyed a wonderful trip to Wisley. They took part in a ‘Sowing and Growing: the Magic of Seeds’ workshop where they dissected a bean seed to find out what was happening inside and learnt about seed dispersal by handling native and unusual seeds from around the world. As part of the workshop they also planted a ‘Poached egg’ seed – named as such because the middle of the flower looks like the yolk of an egg with a white surround. The boys then toured the gardens and were asked to spot patterns in nature and either sketch or take photos of these. ‘Patterns in Nature’ will form part of their next topic in Art. Overall, it was a really worthwhile day and an excellent opportunity to fuse science and art.

SHS SKI TRIP

Mr Davison, Director of Sport, reflects on the trip: ‘The cast of SHS boys, siblings (including SHOBS), friends, mums and dads certainly played their part in making our trip to Auron one of the highlights of the year. With exclusive use of the delightful Hotel L’Ecureuil (supported by Le Chastellares), the group settled quickly into the luxury of a sunny week in the Southern French Alps. Despite landing in the busiest week of the year, Auron did not disappoint – consistent deep blue skies, warm sunshine, wonderful skiing and (oh yes!) a lovely little spot for a chocolate chaud around every corner!

The boys and girls enjoyed expert tuition led by the wonderful Nicole and her fantastic team of ESF instructors. The balance for the children of time with friends in lessons, with their mum and/or dad skiing and down time around the hotel worked so well throughout the week. Evening activities included karaoke (thank you Mr Thomas – you really did bring up the quality a hundred fold!), which included much dancing too, torch-lit skiing and ice-skating. My sincere thanks must go to Mrs Ross and Mr Thomas for all of their help and support with the trip.

The biggest thanks must go to the boys, girls and “grown-ups” who joined the trip this year – each of you played a major role in making this trip one that myself and the staff team thoroughly enjoyed – and one that will stay in the memory for many years. Super skiing, sunshine, fresh air, amazing food, incredible hospitality and company par excellence – thank you!’

FEBRUARY SPORTS REPORT

February started, quite rightly, with rugby. The U10 teams (including the mighty ‘Quins’ and ‘Wasps’ mixed-ability teams) were in action with our friends from Northcote Lodge. The benefit in respect of fun, support and development of mixed-ability sport (as part of a wider programme) was underlined this month by the ‘6-Nations’ events run for both the Year 3 and the Year 5 pupils. With the boys mixed-up and representing various teams from the international competition, great fun was had and excellent rugby was displayed! As the month progressed towards the half-term break it was clear at every turn that the SHS rugby teams were finding their feet. The U11 rugby teams who took on King’s College and the U12 and U13 teams in action with Aldro provided stark evidence of a fast and, broadly, developing group of rugby teams.

The SHS Swim Team certainly looked to be in great shape and the boys made the most of the training event at the Xcel centre in Walton-upon-Thames in preparation for the journey to Downsend School – our hosts for the Regional IAPS Gala. This was the first stage of (hoped-for) qualification for the IAPS National Swimming Finals. It was amazing to witness the performances of the boys in an exceptionally high-standard event and they should feel very proud!

The U13A hockey team enjoyed an excellent day at the IAPS Regional Tournament at Eastbourne College. The team enjoyed a successful ‘pool-stage’ and we are happy to report that SHS defeated Hampshire Collegiate in the quarter-final and St Ronan’s in the semi-final to secure a place in the Plate final. A brave and determined performance proved not quite enough and the SHS team went down in the last minute to a late winner from Barrow Hills. In every sense a tremendous day and well done to all involved. Next it was the turn of the U11A hockey team, which was also a regional IAPS tournament. Incredibly, the boys secured second position in the early stages and qualified for the main Cup competition. The team brought a high-energy, all-action approach, with a strong touch of deft and smart play, to the challenge of defeating Hall Grove. With last-ditch defending, miracle saves and shots missing by millimetres, it was 15 minutes of wonderful sport. In terms of achieving a place in the semi-final – the boys fell agonisingly short, but the team showed off the best of SHS sport. At the Caterham event, following a tough defeat in the first match, the U10A hockey team ran out unbeaten for the rest of the day – wonderful!

YEAR 6 RIVER BASIN MODELS

Year 6 boys were asked to produce models on river basins to support their studies in Geography this term. Students could use any materials and use these models as an educational tool to show the different landforms and processes. Miss Mallory, Head of Geography, said, ‘The result was spectacular and it was a challenge to judge the winner. The boys were certainly innovative in their creations, including one which had actual running water powered by solar energy! Many thanks for all the tremendous work put into these models. They have provided an excellent display in the New Block corridor.’ Mr Davison, a keen Geographer, took on the difficult task of judging and the winners were as follows: 1st Alex Morawitz Runners-up: Caspar Maxwell Randeria and Frederick von Kaltenborn

WORLD BOOK DAY 2020

World Book Day saw a huge turnout of boys and staff members dressed in colourful pyjamas, dressing-gowns and onesies to celebrate our own ‘share your bedtime story’. It was truly delightful to see so many boys (and staff) embracing our environmentally friendly theme by digging out their favourite bedtime story, with many reminiscing about their younger years, to share with others.

The Library was packed at both breaks with a variety of activities including the ever-popular annual ‘Guess the Staff ’ competition. The Booky Book Swap also proved hugely popular, which saw the Library literally swamped with boys eager to swap their old books for another book to read.

SURREY SCHOOLS CONCERT

In March, the SHS Singers travelled to St John’s School, Leatherhead, for the Surrey Schools Concert in aid of The Children’s Trust. The Children’s Trust is a charity which supports young people with brain injuries, aiding their recovery to full health. Performances from the SHS Singers of ‘Give me Wings’, ‘The Rose’ with a solo by Eric Taylor and ‘Radioactive’ certainly impressed and delighted the supportive audience. Several parents and teachers from other schools commented on the high level of singing and commitment shown by the boys. Many congratulations to the SHS Singers on their efforts.

CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION

A number of boys entered a competition to design a Christmas card for our local MP, Sir Edward Davey, and Kiran Sagoo and Felix Scambler were runners-up in the age 11–15 category. Sir Edward said in his letter: ‘It was extremely difficult to judge the competition this year – we received such a high standard of entries and a wide variety of interpretations on the “a climate-friendly Christmas” theme... Please pass my congratulations to them both – I was so impressed with their creative designs!’

YEAR 1 MUSIC FESTIVAL

We were delighted to welcome children from Long Ditton Infant and Nursery School, The Merlin, The Rowans and Shrewsbury House Pre-Prep to SHS for the Year 1 Music Festival. The music festival displayed a high level of energy and passion for singing across the five schools represented. Pupils from inside and outside of the Shrewsbury House School Trust came together to share performances full of fun and gusto. The performances began with ‘The Rose’, performed by the SHS Singers with a moving solo from Head Chorister Eric Taylor. This was followed by The Rowans encouraging the audience to ‘Sing for Joy’ and children from the Merlin School showing that you have to have ‘Heart’. The Junior Choir of Shrewsbury House were dramatic in performing ‘Black Socks’ and ‘Magic Machine’, while the Shrewsbury House Pre-Prep got the feet tapping with the classic ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ from The Jungle Book. Boys and girls from Long Ditton Primary sang a lovely rendition of ‘I Like the Flowers’ before all the schools came together as one voice for a rousing version of Flanders and Swann’s ‘The Hippopotamus’. Complete with wellies, Mr Thomas conducted this fantastic sound and even got the audience singing along as well! A wonderful morning’s music making and enjoyment all round from all of the children and staff involved.

SCIENCE WEEK AT SHREWSBURY HOUSE

To help celebrate British Science Week, the Science Department ran a wide range of exciting activities at lunchtimes throughout the week for Years 3–7. The activities included:

• Year 3 enjoyed making a bubbling picture and volcanoes in fizzy science

• Year 4 had lots of fun with Oobleck

• Year 5 used their detective skills to examine fingerprints and write some secret messages

• Year 6 had to use their knowledge of density to make a tower of colour

• Year 7 managed to extract DNA from strawberries A huge thank you to the following boys who helped with the running of the activities: Charlie Babb, Charlie Craig, Thomas Incledon, Harry Love and William Cutler in Year 8 and George Day in Year 7.

GREEK DAY

The Classics Department organised a wide range of events for Greek Theme Day, which included:

• Art adopted a Greek cross-curricular theme – they sketched and studied Greek vase patterns and then created their own using papier-mâché.

• A delicious Greek lunch was prepared for staff and boys.

• Various lunchtime activities going on in the Library for different Year groups.

• In Maths classes, the senior boys looked at and revisited Pythagoras’ theorem in preparation for the Year 7 and 8 Pythagoras challenge in the Library.

• Year 5 studied Spartacus in Classics, learning about this Thracian gladiator-slave who rebelled against the Romans.

• There was a very popular trail challenge around the School, with a raffle and prize for the winners. Congratulations to the winners of the challenge: Alexander Curle, Frederick von Kaltenborn and Gyu Bhin Kim.

TRIP TO BUTSER ANCIENT FARM

Year 3 had a brilliant trip to Butser Ancient Farm. Despite experiencing sun, wind, rain and even hail at one point, the boys did not let this dampen their spirits and enthusiastically joined in a variety of Iron Age and Roman activities. The morning was spent learning to spin wool and build a flint wall, before they enjoyed lunch in a reconstructed Iron Age house with a fire to warm them from the strong winds outside. A tour of the Roman villa, mosaic designing and jewellery-making completed the day, with the boys all coming home with their own Roman style bracelet or ring. An excellent day was had and thank you to all of the boys for their enthusiasm and thoughtful questions throughout the trip.

TOWNSEND-WARNER HISTORY PRIZE COMPETITION

This year, all the SHS Scholars entered the Townsend-Warner History Prize competition, one of the oldest institutions in the Prep School world, now in its 135th year. The first paper was written at the start of term and we learned that four boys made it through to Paper 2: Alfie Mitchell, Yacine El Bachir, Milo Hamilton-Raimondi and Otto Hamilton-Raimondi. In early March, these boys sat the 2-hour paper and patiently awaited their results. They all did really well, finishing in the Top 200 of the country; the organisers said that 1036 students entered and a record 81 schools took part. Mr Smart, Head of History, said, ‘This is a great achievement and I have been very impressed by the efforts and commitment of all the boys who took part this year. Well done!’

SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

We have had a number of boys sitting a host of Scholarships over the past few months. Well done to all of them for preparing, working hard at honing their skills and then sitting the various assessments. We are very proud of you all. YEAR 4 PRODUCTION – ‘THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS’

The Year 4 boys worked incredibly hard on their acting and singing skills to produce a production that wonderfully encapsulated this adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s classic tale. Whether it was through portraying boastful Mr Toad (or Toads in this case), Rattys, Moles, the grumpy badger, or any of the other wildlife and inhabitants of the wood, the boys showed real camaraderie and resilience. They did a remarkably good job in learning their lines over a very short period of time and their singing was beautiful. We are very proud of each and every one of them; their filmed performance is indicative of their hard work. A special thank you to the Year 4 Sports staff and English staff who supported the rehearsals, Mrs Cross as director, Mr Driscoll for the lights and Miss Barnes for her work on the music. The Theatre Club boys were also brilliant and really supported the production: well done to Arran Blevins, Jasper Cole, Harry Ebbans, Saahan Kapoor, Joseph Stankovski, Lucas Starling, Gerard van der Goes and Freddie Wolff. SPRING CONCERT

The SHS Spring Concert truly sprang into life on a March evening! A total of 13 ensembles delighted the audience with a wonderful varied programme, demonstrating the talent of the boys.

The concert, featuring all of the school’s musical ensembles, drew a full capacity and excited audience, who were treated to a widely mixed and quality evening of musical entertainment. Ensembles just starting out on their musical journey – such as the Junior Wind Band and Middle Choir – were able to display their talent and promise, while the more established groups – such as Brass One and the String Orchestra – were really moving through the gears, showing real understanding and technique in their music-making.

Some stand-out performances from the evening included the String Ensemble’s breath-taking performance of Sibelius’ ‘Andante Festivo’, clearly demonstrating that the strings at Shrewsbury House are above and beyond what you would expect at Prep school level. Jazz One got many a foot tapping with Otis Redding’s ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’ and the classic ‘New York, New York’. The SHS Singers, fresh from their performance at the Surrey Schools Concert, brought out a set of the highest quality, even drawing the smallest of standing ovations from the audience. The concert concluded with all the boys singing a rousing version of Elbow’s ‘One Day Like This’, completed with full band and strings backing.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the Visiting Music Teachers in running the weekly ensembles, coaching and cajoling the performers to greater heights, came to fruition and blossomed. Under the direction of Mr Gough, Mr Jani, Miss Percy, Mr Rae, Mr Nugent, Miss Barnes and not forgetting Mr Thomas, the boys were given the opportunity to show their enjoyment of music and to share this with the audience. Many congratulations to all the hugely impressive boys!

MARCH SPORTS REPORT

The final month of the spring term saw no respite in the levels of sporting activity, performance and excellence. Of course, continued rugby was enjoyed, but more of that later. This term saw a wonderful variety of competition sport on offer for the SHS boys and it is a privilege to celebrate some of that here.

The boys’ brief but highly valued hockey season continued this month. The U13A and U13B teams travelled to Cranmore for matches and a great Monday late afternoon of hockey was enjoyed by all. For those that made the journey to Danes Hill for the U10A Giants, Pirates and Vikings hockey matches, the memory will likely last many years – the boys played with great skill, determination and spirit in horrendous weather: warriors all! In any event, the experience clearly aided the development of the U10A hockey team in their preparation for the Charterhouse event. Well done indeed to them – unbeaten in the pool stages, the boys qualified for the main Cup semi-final. Serious hockey opposition in the form of Hall Grove School awaited the SHS boys and, despite a valiant effort, the challenge proved too great. The Bronze medal match saw a repeat of the earlier (0-0 draw) pool match with Eagle House. As the rain and the wind swept in, the SHS boys proved the tougher team, and ran out victors in a tight and competitive match. A worthy 3rd-placed Bronze medal win – congratulations!

The SHS Swim team was again in action this month. They took part in a gala competing against King’s College and Feltonfleet schools. There was some excellent team and individual performances on what was the first time we fielded a team from the entire school (all Year groups). The gala was a combination of relays and 25 m sprints, and special mention to all of the Year 3 boys, who were at their first swimming gala and had to contend with diving in from the high starter blocks! Congratulations to all of the boys who took part and thanks to all of the parents, who made quite a noise in supporting our swimmers.

Golf is another sport we support and we look forward to supporting the SHS teams in the summer term, as sadly the spring term events fell afoul of the weather.

Judo at SHS is supported by way of an after-school club, delivered by Jack Holdbrook of Shoden Martial Arts. In March we were delighted to celebrate the stand-out success of Mohammad Malikov. Mohammad represented SHS at the National IAPS Judo event and proved too strong for all the others, winning a first-placed gold medal, and was crowned champion – brilliant news!

The SHS clay shooting team were in action again with Danes Hill School at the Surrey Shooting School in Reigate. Another great afternoon! With two boys brand new to the sport, a win was always going to be a stretch, but huge value and enjoyment was had! Strong foundations have now been laid for further National competition to come – well done. Special mention to Josh Jacobs and Riley Osborne who shot their first ever clays!

March saw the commencement of the House Pentathlon competition – all boys from all Year groups competing in all five athletics events. It was wonderful to see the boys run, jump and throw with such determination in striving for their respective Houses. Tennis also came to the fore, with trials preparation for the summer term events.

In terms of rugby, despite the poor weather and the battle with Coronavirus, March still saw plenty of SHS rugby action to celebrate. With all Year groups in competition, the culmination of a wonderful set of House Rugby events and a number of festivals attended, this month was as busy as ever. Just before the cessation of school sport the boys made it out to a variety of events hosted by our friends elsewhere – the U9A & B teams at Caldicott, the U11A team at Aldro and the U12A and 1st teams also at Caldicott. All teams should be so very proud of their efforts and performances at these prestigious events. Well done to Gethin Davies, Felix Thorburn and Thomas Brown, who received the rugby core values award at Caldicott.
