ALTAPETOAUTUMN TERM 2018

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Welcome to the Autumn Term edition of Alta Peto. The term started brightly as we welcomed the new boys and their parents to the Shrewsbury House Community. I have been delighted with how our new charges have settled in and how quickly new friendships have been so firmly cemented. Reflected in these pages is a small insight into the many wonderful activities and events that have taken place at SHS. Highlights this term include the Harvest Festival, Music Concerts, WWI 100th Anniversary Commemorations, Inter-House Football, Future Schools Evening, Year group plays and the splendid Carol Service. For the latest news on the boys’ cultural, sporting and academic achievements and activities, please do follow us on Twitter @shrewsburyhouse. I do hope that you will enjoy reading about our boys’ full and rewarding Autumn Term!

KEVIN DOBLE

NEW BOYS’ LUNCH AND PARENTS’ BRIEFING

We were delighted to welcome all of the new pupils to the New Boys’ Lunch just before the official start of the term. Mr Doble met all of the new boys as they arrived at Shrewsbury House. At the lunch, they met their Year 8 buddies, who were just as excited as they were! It was marvellous to watch the buddies and new boys get to know each other over the first few days of term and watch friendships blossom. At the end of afternoon, Mr Doble and senior staff met with the new parents and welcomed them to SHS and the SHS community.

YEAR 8 SCIENCE TRIP

In Science, Year 8 started the year with an ecology topic and what better way to introduce it than a field trip. All of the Year 8 boys travelled to a local wildlife area where they learned different ways that an area can be sampled, using quadrats and transects to find the biodiversity and abundance of different species. The trip was to aid their studies, as this is part of their Common Entrance and scholarship syllabus. This will enable the boys to be able to use their primary data to make suggestions as to why certain species are more abundant than others or the impact that humans, roads or developments have on an ecosystem. It was a very successful and worthwhile morning.

HOLLAND FOOTBALL TOUR

Our talented 1st team and U11A team squad travelled to Breda in Holland in late August for the traditional pre-season Football Tour, led by Mr Foster, Mr Driscoll and Mr Spires. The teams played several fixtures during their time in Breda and both teams trained hard and played superbly. It was a great experience for all the boys to play against such good, skilful opposition. All of the boys should be commended for their performances and be congratulated for being such good ambassadors on and off the field. This continues to be a very successful pre-season training experience for our boys.

TATLER SCHOOLS GUIDE 2019

We are really proud and pleased to feature in the recently published Tatler Schools Guide, listing what they judge to be the top 100 or so Prep Schools in the UK. Apparently, we run the School ‘with the same precision and efficiency as the top-notch businesses for which many of its pupils’ parents work’! The full review appeared in the October edition of Tatler.

FUTURE SMART PRESENTATION

Parents and staff across the Shrewsbury House School Trust family were invited to education expert and author Jane Simister’s Future Smart presentation at SHS. It was exceptionally well attended and feedback was most positive. The evening was just one initiative amongst many, designed to enhance further SHS’s learning culture, which embraces the ‘Future Smart’ approach. We are committed to developing Intellectual Character and building upon study skills to enable our boys to reach their potential. All our boys were also taught study strategies in workshops and were introduced to the same Intellectual Character traits by the Academic Leadership Team. It is imperative that the education presented at SHS offers an energising blend of the curriculum and the pastoral. We aim for all boys in our care to continue to embrace a love of learning and to become ‘Future Smart’ for life.

NEW PARENTS’ DINNER

The same week as the new boys started the academic year, we welcomed our new parents to a dinner with staff at SHS. As always, this was a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow parents and forge new connections with parents and staff. The delicious three-course meal was followed by Mr Doble warmly welcoming the gathered parents and he reminded them to enjoy every step of this special journey and time in their son’s life.

SHS U11 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The U11A team played in the 7-a-side SHS Football Tournament and won the tournament! In the first round, the SHS team topped the group by beating Northcote Lodge 1-0 and drawing 0-0 to AC Cobham. In the quarter-final, SHS beat Cumnor House 1-0. In the semi-final, they beat Dulwich Prep 2-0. In the final against Cranmore, the SHS team played their best football, beating Cranmore 5-0. Congratulations to the U11A team, who displayed some fantastic football throughout the tournament. The pre-season Football Tour was a huge success in preparing the boys for the start of the season.

AUTHOR VISIT – ANDREW LANE

Our year of author visits lifted off marvellously with a visit from the well-known writer Andrew Lane. His long list of successful sellers over the last 25 years includes the ‘Young Sherlock’ series and Dr Who spin-offs. He talked to the boys in Years 7 and 8 about his new book series called ‘AWOL – Agent Without Licence’. Some thoughts from the Year 8 boys who attended included Josh Sinfield, who said, ‘The book is meant to draw you in like it is virtual reality. It is meant to put you into other people’s footsteps, so that you become that person.’ Ben Bagshaw commented that, ‘Overall, I thought it was very interesting and would recommend it to other schools.’ Max Hyatt said, ‘I learned about different secret service organisations, such as MI5, MI6 and some from other countries.’

PRIMARY FESTIVAL OF SPORT

We were delighted to welcome 117 children from Malden Manor Primary School, St Matthew’s Church of England Primary School and Long Ditton St Mary’s Church of England Junior School to take part in the annual SHS Primary Festival of Sport. The purpose of the Festival is to enable children from other schools to have the opportunity to use some of the SHS sports facilities and to experience coaching from the SHS sports department. The children took part in a variety of round-robin activities, including the three main SHS core sports of Rugby, Football and Cricket as well as Handball and Dodgeball. It was a fantastic morning and the children really enjoyed their time with us, especially playing on the All Weather Surface, which was a new experience for many of them.

KING’S HOUSE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The U10 team had a very successful day at the King’s House Football Tournament. Fortunately, the rain did not dampen the boys’ efforts and performance. The boys won every game without conceding a goal, beating some very good teams on the way to a fantastic victory. Max Stuttard and William Baker performed particularly notably. Congratulations to all of the boys who took part!

YARDLEY COURT FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The U9A team travelled to Yardley Court at the end of September and played some superb football throughout the tournament. They won all their group matches, scoring 12 goals and conceding just one. This put the boys into the final against Hazelwood. The boys continued to play some great football, but unfortunately could not convert their chances. The bar and the post were hit four times. After normal and extra time, the score was still 0-0. This meant the trophy was shared with Hazelwood. Congratulations to the team on a superb morning’s football.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING

Towards the end of September, the School participated in the Macmillan Coffee Morning, raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Details of the charity can be found at https://coffee.macmillan.org.uk/. Two of our old boys, Clément and Jérémy Toussaint, who left SHS for Eton College in 2016, along with their mother, Mrs Toussaint, arranged for every boy and teacher in the School to receive a croissant at short break! Each boy was asked to bring in at least £1 as a donation to Macmillan, when they arrived at school. A huge thank-you to the Toussaint family for their generosity and kindness and for raising £341 for such an excellent cause.

VERBAL REASONING GAMES

Year 4 boys have been working with puzzles and games this term during their Verbal Reasoning lessons. The different puzzles and games had different shapes and colours, which had to be either connected or matched, or tactically used for the individual to be successful. The boys said that they had to think carefully in spotting the patterns and thought it was a great way of making them learn to explore and think for themselves, just like they would have to when it came to answering a verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning question. Overall, the boys thought it was great fun and enjoyed learning how to work out and play the puzzles and games. Thank you to the SHA for providing the funds for these games, which will also be used in the Year 5 Reasoning Club in the Spring Term.

ABRSM MUSIC CERTIFICATES

Thirty-five SHS musicians received their Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) certificates in September for exams that were taken at the end of the Summer Term. Congratulations to the following boys on some fantastic music results, with particular commendations to Sam Collins, Carter Jenkinson and Leo Ridge, who all achieved the coveted Distinction grade.

YEAR 6 MUSIC CONCERT

At the beginning of October, the Year 6 boys produced a well-received display of quality music-making in the first Concert of the year. With over 50 boys playing a solo piece or as part of a small ensemble, the talent and depth of the year group was clearly on show, producing a wide range of music from Mozart to Mancini. The beginning and end of the evening provided real moments of choral excellence that proved that Year 6 are a musical force. Congratulations to all the boys involved in a truly fantastic concert and thank you to Mr Thomas and Mr Stevenson for co-ordinating the event.

CONVERSION CHARITY PROJECT

We were delighted to welcome Mr Steve Blevins, the Founder of the Conversion charity, to our Assembly at the beginning of October. Conversion started three years ago here at Shrewsbury House. The aim was, and still is, to collect used sports shoes from the UK and send them to Laos, to enable girls and boys (previously playing in bare feet) to enjoy the simple pleasure of playing rugby in suitable footwear and to prevent avoidable injuries. To date the scheme has delivered around 1,000 pairs, touching the lives of many children in Laos. Mr Blevins gave an update on the work that has recently taken place and explained to the boys that in the October half term he would be visiting Laos with his son Arran and SHS friend Lorcan Murphy. Each of the SHS Houses will have a pair of sports shoes in their House colours, which were being taken out by the group to Laos. These sports shoes were filmed as they were handed over during the Assembly, and were tracked along their journey to their new owners.

During the trip to Laos over half term, Princess Beatrice was in the country at the same time as the group and was there to support the work of British NGOs and organisations helping the developing nation with health and educational projects and mine clearance. Whilst attending a Laos/UK Friendship event in the capital, Vientiane, she took time to hear about Conversion and Mr Blevins was delighted to have the opportunity to discuss the Conversion project with her.

Lorcan said, ‘The trip was brilliant and I really loved training with the children and seeing how they have different rugby drills. I was training with children aged 14 to 16 and not all of them were able to train wearing shoes and instead were barefoot. It is an amazing country and the trip provided an excellent insight. It was also really good to talk to Princess Beatrice briefly and she asked me about the project.’

Mr Blevins said, ‘Bringing the boys to this beautiful country and seeing first-hand the simple difference a pair of sports shoes can make strengthens my resolve to continue and do even more. We are keen to raise awareness for the scheme in order to secure funding to enable more children in this underdeveloped country to enjoy simple pleasures of playing sport safely.’ The biggest challenge of the charity is to fund the transportation of the shoes to Laos, as there is no seaport. All the shoes they receive have to be sent by Airfreight, which is considerably more expensive. Mr Doble commented, ‘The Shrewsbury House School community has been enormously proud to support the Conversion project for the last three years and will continue to do so. Thanks to the efforts of Mr Blevins, the donated shoes and sports shirts have made a big impact to the lives of the children involved in the project. We are delighted that the project continues to grow and hope that many more children will benefit from the scheme.’

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Thank you to all of the families who donated food for the Harvest Festival. The food was despatched to a local food bank and charity, who were incredibly grateful for the donations. We were similarly grateful for the generosity shown in the retiring collection, with £800 raised for Momentum, a charity based in Kingston, which offers support to children affected by cancer and other life-threating illnesses. The service itself was wonderful, set in a gloriously sunny autumnal morning. The boys, under the direction of Mr Thomas and Mr Stevenson, sang exquisitely. The full force of the School’s choral tradition was on show during the proceedings, with the whole of Years 3, 4 and 5 contributing to the service in congregational singing. The Senior Voices

brought something different with their rendition of Elton John’s inspiring ‘Circle of Life’, and the SHS Singers rounded off the high standard of music with two beautiful anthems from John Rutter. The readers did a marvellous job too, reading their passages with confidence and emotion. In his address, Mr Akhurst spoke to the boys about the spirit of Harvest Festival and the nature of giving. He asked us all to appreciate that many people do not have a choice of what they eat and some have to use food banks to ensure that they actually have a daily meal. Thank you to all of the staff who were involved in organising the morning and to Mrs Patullo, Mrs Brooks and Mrs Stokhuyzen for arranging the food in the glorious setting of St Andrew’s Church.

FIRST WORLD WAR MEMORIAL BOARDS

We were honoured to have a number of First World War Memorial Boards temporarily installed in the Irving Room for a week in October. The boards were created to mark the anniversary of the end of the First World War and are now permanently displayed in St Matthew’s Parish Church. The boards reflect the casualties of just one parish, not even the whole town. At least one member of the SHS community is referenced: RSM M Murphy, who ran the School Rifle Club and lived in the Gate House. Thank you to SHS parent Mr Blevins for organising the loan of the display.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The School Council for 2018–19 was announced in Assembly in late September and Mr Doble presented the boys with their badges. The School Council are elected by their year group peers and play an important role in school life. The Year 3 boys voted for their representatives after the October half term. Well done to the following boys:

Year 3Gethin Davies, Felix Thorburn and Jake Thomas

Year 4Jago Young, Joe Hackshall and Tom Saunders Year 5Lucas Cornelsen, Conrad Lai and Oliver Rees Year 6Billy Burke, Gyu Bhin Kim and Thomas McGrath Year 7Charlie Babb, Charlie Craig and Thomas Incledon Year 8Ben Clarke, William Lovatt and William Malet de CarteretLuke Incledon, Wilf Stokhuyzen (Deputies) and William Jarrett (Head Boy)

U11A BRADFIELD COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

In the opening matches, the U11A team dominated possession and territory and controlled the games against St Andrew’s, Papplewick and Parkside. This time, they took their chances, winning all three matches, which meant they topped the group. In the quarter-final, they came up against St George’s and managed to hold onto their 1-0 lead to win the game. In the semi-final, the team faced a talented Cheam side. An incredible save was a game-changer and gave the boys the confidence to seal the game with another goal. The final was a fierce contest and our boys gave it everything against Hall Grove. With some outstanding defensive work from the entire team, they held the 1-0 lead and won the final. A proud moment for the team and many congratulations!

HENI TALKS / YEAR 8 DAZZLE SHIP WORK

The Year 8 boys have been working on a Dazzle Ship project, which was inspired by a short film made for HENI Talks in Soho. HENI Talks make short documentaries and they are dedicated to sharing insights about art history on film from leading artists, curators and academics. The boys produced some fantastic paintings and Mrs Gravenor, Head of Art, sent a few examples for the team to look at. HENI Talks were really impressed and the Director, Munira Mirza, asked if they might use some of the photographs of the boys’ work on their social media and website. Well done to all of the boys who painted such fantastic Dazzle Ships.

YEAR 7 PLAY – TWELFTH NIGHT

The Year 7 production of Twelfth Night was delivered with a mixture of humour, camaraderie and confidence. Mrs Cross, Head of Drama, wrote, ‘The boys have worked incredibly hard over the last three weeks learning lines, stage directions, cues and song lyrics. On the evenings, it was hard to distinguish who enjoyed themselves more – the parents or the boys! Special thanks need to go to the parents for their wonderful costumes, Mr Thomas as the Musical Director, Mr Barnett for his work on the sound, Cameron Elliot on the lights and Jamie Abbate for delivering the front-of-house messages. Most of all, a massive well done to all of the Year 7 boys, who gave two very polished performances. This was particularly impressive on Wednesday night when they had already walked down to church, participated in the Harvest Festival and then played in matches in the afternoon! A fine example of Shrewsbury House Boys at their most resilient.’ Mr Doble added his sincere thanks to Mrs Cross for another marvellous production and for all of her hard work in producing such a fantastic play.

YEAR 8 ENGLISH SPEAKING BOARD INTERVIEW SKILLS

Year 8S researched and prepared for ESB interview skills, which were held on Monday 8th October. This four part-presentation involved a structured personal introduction in front of the class, focussing on the personal interests and strengths one would bring to a senior school. The class asked questions, to which the pupil responded. The award also involved an interview with the adjudicator posing as a representative from the future school and was also an opportunity for pupils to have further opportunities to talk about what matters to them: they were also expected to ask questions of the future ‘school’. Boys in 8S acquitted themselves very well both in the preparation and on the day, and have learned a great deal about themselves and each other in the process.

YEAR 3 TATE MODERN ART TRIP

The Year 3 boys enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day on the Southbank at the Tate Modern at the end of October. They were given a wonderful tour around the Gallery and took part in a range of tasks in which they were encouraged to talk about some of the artworks on display and even created fantastic masterpieces of their own! As ever, the boys responded with plenty of enthusiasm and proved themselves to be excellent ambassadors for the School. Mrs Gravenor created a lovely display of art and photographs from the day and the boys had a thoroughly enjoyable and productive trip.

U10A WINCHESTER FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The boys had an excellent day of football at Winchester College. The boys won all their group games, scoring 12 goals and conceding 1 over the course of three games. The team were then organised into a second group, once again winning every game and qualifying for the final. In a tight and nervy game, the match went to sudden death penalties. Charlie Moffatt stepped up and scored the first penalty, leaving Oliver Rees to save the next and win the tournament for the boys. Special mentions must go to Max Stuttard, who achieved the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award and Oliver Rees for another outstanding day in goal. Well done to all the boys who played.

CROSS-COUNTRY COMPETITION

Two SHS cross-country teams represented Shrewsbury House at The Schools at Somerhill event in Kent. The competition is set in beautiful grounds and hosts some of the top cross-country teams in the area – two good reasons to challenge the boys, with us entering at least one runner from every Year. The set route this year was particularly tough, but the boys can be very, very proud of their efforts as each year the team scores are improving and the U13 team was only 50 or so points from a podium position. The U11 team was similarly impressive. A very special mention must go to the Elliott brothers: Cameron (Year 8) achieved a top 10 finish and younger brother Zachary (Year 5), who ran a year young in the U11 event, secured a truly stunning 5th place. Both races had fields of around 120 runners. Great spirit, great bravery, great effort. Well done all!

YEAR 3 ENGLISH SPEAKING BOARD AWARDS

The Year 3 classes were very busy in the first half of the Autumn Term preparing for their ESB examination. It was a delight to watch them speak and perform their lines so confidently in front of the examiner, and then again, in front of an appreciative audience of parents who came along to support their efforts. All three Year 3 classes did so well that they gained Distinctions in their class performances! Well done boys. The pieces were:

3A (DB)‘The Crayon Box That Talked’ by Shane DeRolf‘First Catch Your Dragon’ from ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell

3B (AH)‘Ten Dancing Dinosaurs’ by John Foster‘Throwing the Hammer’ from ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl

3C (JMK)‘The School Kids’ Rap’ by Matthew Tam McMillan‘The Chocolate Room’ from ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl

WPPS EXCHANGE

It was a real pleasure to welcome six Western Province Prep School (WPPS) boys to the School for two weeks in October. The boys participated in the normal day here at SHS. Some of the boys learnt French for the first time, along with Latin. They also played their part on the football field, representing the School in two competitive matches. When not at school, the boys were hosted by the families of Nicholas Draper, Noah Horne, Hugh Jacobs, Paul Ellinghorst, Michael Le Roux and Arthur Pearce-Higgins. A huge thank you to the SHS families for making their stay so memorable with some wonderful trips. The WPPS boys ended their stay by presenting an Assembly, which focussed on Cape Town and the recent drought that they had endured. On their final day, the boys enjoyed an excellent lunch with Mr Doble, which included all the boys who will be travelling in February to Cape Town.

INTER-HOUSE FOOTBALL

What a wonderful afternoon of sport was had by all! The level of enthusiasm and energy reserved for House competition was wonderful to witness. The boys seemed to relish the opportunity to play in competitive matches with friends and peers outside their usual football teams. The desire to perform, displayed by boys who play regularly in teams ranging from A to H, was impressive and it was heartening to see great evidence of the boys supporting each other. Equally, it was wonderful to see first-hand the boys displaying the SHS Sport values of Enjoyment, Sportsmanship, Teamwork and Hard Work! Congratulations to all the teams who were winners of their respective competitions; and to Raleigh House who claimed the overall title. Thank you to all of the families who came to support the event.

RUGBY CAMP

During the half term break, over one hundred boys enjoyed three sunny and fun days at the SHS October Rugby Camp. With the school rugby season right around the corner, it was great to get back to the business of helping the boys develop their skills, encouraging a fun and supportive approach to the sport, and preparing them for forthcoming matches. It was wonderful to welcome not only boys from Shrewsbury House School (SHS), but also from our Trust schools. The boys are so lucky to be able to attend the camp here at SHS as it was on the (International Rugby Board certified) All Weather Surface at the Ditton Road site – the facility is first class! The camp was supported expertly by both SHS staff and selected professionals from other schools – our thanks to them for their sterling efforts in providing a safe and fun environment for the boys to progress. Well done all.

U8A AND U8B AT THE KING’S COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The Under 8A and B teams played in their first ever tournaments for the School, in the KCJS 6-a-side competition on the Friday before we broke up for half term. The B team were excellent and must be commended on their performance in reaching the semi-final of the plate competition before, unfortunately, losing on penalty kicks. The A team were magnificent all day and comfortably won the group. They then successfully navigated their way into the final, where the team met a tough Wetherby side. The boys saved their best football for last and won the game 2-0 to be crowned deserved winners of the tournament. The boys can be very proud of their achievement and our thanks go to KCJS for hosting such a fun and rewarding day.

1ST IAPS NATIONAL FOOTBALL FINALS

Many congratulations to the 1st football team of boys who made it all the way to the National VI-a-side Final – placing them second in the country! The boys can be incredibly proud of their achievements this season. The team came through the Regional competition in great shape and were able to carry their form all the way to Taunton. With a run of five unbeaten matches in the first round and a tight 1-0 victory over New Beacon in the semi-final, the SHS team were worthy finalists with Westbrook Hay. Well done boys – an outstanding achievement.

SWIMMING GALAS

The SHS Swim Team competed in three swim galas throughout the term – hosted by Parkside, Feltonfleet and King’s College schools. Boys from all year groups performed brilliantly in the first event at Parkside School – many competing for the first time. Next, the senior boys travelled to Feltonfleet School to compete in a senior gala versus Feltonfleet, Parkside and Rokeby schools. All the boys swum really well and emerged just a few points behind the winners. Victories were recorded by both Thomas and Luke Incledon, and the Year 8 freestyle relay team of Cameron Elliott, Luke Incledon, Oli Bamford and Ben Knight. A wonderful event, involving a huge team of boys from Years’ 3-8, at King’s College School capped off the term’s swim season – well done to all the swimmers!

CLASSICS AND GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO ROME

Thirty-four SHS boys and staff landed in Rome over half term on a Classics and Geography reconnaissance mission. Here is the report from Mr Greenwood:

‘On our first day, we explored the port of Ancient Rome, Ostia Antica, and lost ourselves (sometimes literally) among the ancient ruins. Upon arrival in the capital, we climbed the Aventine Hill before descending into the vast arena of the Circus Maximus. The next day we visited the Colosseum, the Forums, a palatial Roman dwelling, Trajan’s column, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, at which point Ms Mallory ordered Mr Greenwood to direct the party back to the hotel for a rest. On our transfer to the Bay of Naples, we stopped at two fascinating sites, Hadrian’s Villa and the Abbey of Montecassino, before arriving at our second hotel.

The next day we explored Villa Marco at Stabia, which gave us all an unparalleled impression of domestic life for a wealthy Roman. Herculaneum followed, where we were impressed equally by the civic achievement and by the mighty volcano that erased it. Then to the beach, where we swam in the same sea as Tiberius, Cicero and countless other Ancient notables. On our final day, we took the underground: we threaded our way (with full backpacks) through the latticework of tunnels which run under Naples and which served as quarries and, afterwards, water systems for the Pre-Roman Magna Grecians. We stood in the theatre in which Nero performed so often and saw masterpieces of sculpture and mosaics. But can any of these wonders compare to a ‘True Neapolitan Pizza’? Probably not. A great trip—and much credit to everyone involved for being fantastic explorers.’

Mr Doble was pleased to receive a lovely email from a couple who found themselves at Naples airport at the same time as our touring boys. The couple wrote to say how impressed they were with the boys’ behaviour. In their email, they noted that the boys on the trip were ‘all well behaved, disciplined, good natured and energetic’ and that ‘both teachers and boys were a credit to your school.’ They finished off their email by saying that ‘Thinking about those boys of yours, one can imagine them going far, so well done from two strangers.’ Well done all on a very successful trip!

REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMEMORATIONS

During the first half of the Autumn Term, the Shrewsbury House community commemorated the men and women who made sacrifices in warfare, and this culminated in a special Remembrance Day Service on Friday 9th November. Head Boy, William Jarrett, and Deputy Head Boys, Luke Incledon and Wilf Stokhuyzen, led the proceedings with Mr Eaves. They were joined by the House Captains, Jamie Abbate, Joshua Cheong, Ben Clarke and William Malet De Carteret, who together laid a wreath next to the School’s War Memorial. The Last Post and Rouse were played by Oli Bamford, Matthew Aris and Mr Keogh. On the SHS stage during the Service, 68 empty chairs were laid out, each bearing the name of a SHOB who had lost his life in warfare. It was extremely moving for the boys and staff to look at those empty chairs as the Last Post was played.

William Jarrett, Luke Incledon and Wilf Stokhuyzen also visited The Royal Star and Garter Home in the morning and presented them with a wreath on behalf of SHS.

Many SHS Departments commemorated the 100th Anniversary in some capacity. This included:

• History – teaching the history of the First World War to all classes;

• English – looking at First World War Poetry;• Religious Studies – investigating the role of the Salvation

Army;• Geography – mapping the War and the Western Front;• Art – making Dazzle Ship designs (models and paintings);• Classics – comparing WWI with wars of the ancient world;• Modern Foreign Languages – labelling trenches in French;• Science – researching how science influenced the War.

James Bell (Year 6) played in his Scout Group band on Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph. His band was one of only six amateur bands selected from the UK. They paraded from Buckingham Palace to the Cenotaph, followed by 10,000 people nominated for their connection to military personnel. When asked his highlights, James said, ‘Playing in front of thousands of people, past such historic buildings and being such a big part of remembering those that had lost their lives.’ The band also had the opportunity to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph.

HOUSE CAPTAINS 2018–19

Mr Doble was delighted to announce this year’s House Leaders in Assembly. The boys had to apply for the positions and undertake an interview before the October Half Term. Mr Doble said, ‘The calibre of applications certainly was very high and thank you to all the boys who applied.’ Congratulations to the following boys who were selected as House leaders for 2018–19:

BRITISH CHESS RAPIDPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Arun Stewart (Year 4) and Hari Stewart (Year 7) travelled to North Yorkshire for the British Chess Rapidplay Championships at the end of November. Arun played in a one-day junior event and succeeded in placing 4th in his section’s five-round tournament. Hari played in the Intermediate Championship, open to both juniors and adults, comprising 11 rounds over Saturday and Sunday. He did incredibly well to finish 3rd (out of 33) in this challenging section. His score resulted in a second successful qualifying tournament (the first being the British Chess Slow Play Championships last Summer), which has led to an invitation to join the England National Junior Chess Squad, a fantastic achievement!

U11A FOOTBALL SUCCESS

The U11A team have enjoyed a stella season and their consistent performance in tournament competition has been a cause for celebration. The boys made yet another final (St Thomas’s) and added yet another title to the growing list of successes this season. All the boys were recognised in Team of the Week. Success was also celebrated in cup competition – beating Willington Prep in the Surrey Plate semi-final match (scoring nine goals along the way), and were up against Rokeby in the Final. Rokeby put a huge amount of pressure on the team in the first half playing downhill and managed to score from a corner towards the end of the half. The boys fought hard to equalise early in the second half, but ran out of steam with five minutes to go, allowing Rokeby to get ahead. A season’s efforts to be proud of despite losing the final match.

JUNIOR TRAVEL AMBASSADORS

Harry Duffy (Year 6) and Ethan Koller (Year 6) were appointed as our Junior Travel Ambassadors. The boys will represent the School in a scheme run by Kingston and Sutton Council’s Sustainable Transport Team and they will work with last year’s ambassadors (Hari Stewart and Saahan Kapoor) to understand various aspects of road safety and sustainable transport. They will research ways that we can try to reduce air pollution and encourage people to travel in a safer and more environmentally friendly way. The boys will have the opportunity to feed back their findings to the rest of the School and discuss the School’s Travel Plan with Mr Meacher.

HEADMASTER’S COMMENDATIONS

Mr Doble had the pleasure in awarding Headmaster’s Commendations to Harry Duffy (Year 6) and Oli Bamford (Year 8). The boys’ parents were invited to Assembly to watch as the certificates were presented. Harry was commended for suggesting a scheme whereby the senior boys here at SHS help younger children with their reading. Oli was awarded his certificate for his performances on the trumpet at both the SHS and SHPPS Remembrance Day Services. Congratulations to both boys.

ROYAL SOCIETY – YOUNG PEOPLE’S BOOK PRIZE 2018

The Science Department selected a boy from each year group to help review a set of books as part of the Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize 2018. There were a range of books, catering for all age groups and scientific interests. The following boys took part: Stein Mackintosh (Year 4), Luke Morris (Year 5), Jack Cassar-Smith (Year 6), Nicholas Draper (Year 7) and Miles Dickens (Year 8). Commenting on the experience Miles Dickens said, ‘I was really happy to be chosen to review the Optical Illusions book for the Young People’s Book Prize. I found it really interesting with lots of interactive activities. My favourite feature was the eye on the front which taxes your brain.’ We were delighted to hear that the judges in other schools also loved the ‘Optical Illusions’ book as this was voted the overall winner for 2018.

I was really happy to be chosen to review the Optical Illusions book for the Young People’s Book Prize.

U10A RUGBY AT ST PAUL’S SCHOOL FESTIVAL

The Year 5 U10A rugby team were charged with kick-starting the Shrewsbury House School rugby season with participation in the St Paul’s School Festival – and they did it in style! The team were successful throughout the Festival, but what about the core values of SHS Sport? Enjoyment? – tick! Hard work? – tick! Teamwork? – tick! Sportsmanship? – tick! All the boys involved can be very proud of their efforts and of the nature of their ambitious and determined play. With only a week of practice under their belts in terms of the rugby season, this was an impressive start.

HAMPTON SCHOOL ART TRIP

The Year 8 Art scholars visited Hampton School to view the wonderful Art Department and in particular the GCSE Exhibition that was on display. The visit gave the boys a fantastic opportunity to look at final pieces and sketchbooks and they were able to make notes and complete sketches, which will help towards their own Art Scholarship applications. They were very lucky to be given a guided tour of the department by Karen Williams, Head of Art, and were also able to watch an A Level and 5th Form lesson taking place. The boys and Mrs Gravenor found it truly inspiring!

NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK

As part of National Road Safety Week, the boys focused on this important topic in their Tutor period. We were delighted to welcome three officers from the Met Police’s Road Transport Safety team. The officers gave separate presentations to Years 3–5 and Years 6–8, covering a number of different areas, including keeping safe on the roads and developing an awareness of how to act on public transport. The officers posed a number of very thought-provoking questions to the boys, who all learnt much from the Assemblies.

FUTURE SCHOOLS EVENING

Thank you to the many families who joined us to hear Mrs Rowena Cole, Head of St John’s School, and Mr James Priory, Headmaster of Tonbridge, speak about the process of applying to senior schools and the differences between the numerous types of senior schools to which SHS pupils are sent. The aim of the evening was to enrich further the dialogue regarding the process of investigating and then applying to the senior schools, as well as the differences between Day and Boarding. Further discussion centred on 11+ and 13+ as well as how the ‘match-making’ process works and the critical nature of the relationship that Mr Doble develops with the senior schools, parents and of how his awareness of the boys informs the advice provided. We were delighted that two ex-SHS parents were able to join the panel and speak about their own experiences of the 13+ process.

PYRAMID COMPETITION WINNERS

Dozens of fantastic models flooded into School after half term as the Year 3 boys had been busy working on the annual Model Pyramid Competition. They made some amazingly detailed pyramids along with mummies, palm trees, treasure and sarcophagi and many included real sand and examples of hieroglyphs made with all kinds of materials. The standard overall was very high and the judges stated that it was a difficult decision, but winners were eventually decided. Well done to all of the boys who entered.

YEAR 7 CONCERT

The Year 7 Concert took place in late November and featured a marvellous range of instrumental and vocal performances by our talented musicians in the Year. There was something for everyone, with a remarkable range of genre explored. The evening commenced and concluded with the whole Year group choral performances, featuring ‘A Million Dreams’ from the Greatest Showman and ‘Don’t Stop Believing’, which was accompanied by a live Music Staff Band. The singing certainly was well received by a warm and supportive audience. Very well done to all of the Year 7 boys and a huge thank you to Mr Thomas, Mr Stevenson and the VMTs for organising such a splendid and special evening.

YEAR 3 VISIT TO SEE ‘THE CHRISTMAS JOURNEY’ AT THE KING’S CENTRE

Year 3 enjoyed travelling back 2000 years in time to witness the amazing events of the birth of Jesus as they visited the King’s Centre in Chessington. The main hall of the King’s Centre had been transformed into Mary’s kitchen, the hillside outside Jerusalem, the inn stable and the wise men’s palace. Pupils were able to dress up as shepherds and watch the story of the birth of Jesus unfold as they participated in this exciting journey. Many thanks to all the members of the King’s Centre for making this such a memorable occasion for Year 3.

THE CRICKETER GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE 2019

We were really honoured to see SHS recognised as one the top cricketing schools in the UK. The Cricketer’s Good Schools Guide 2019 features the top 100 secondary schools and, for the first time ever, a guide to the top 50 junior and preparatory schools. It follows an exhaustive process, which saw more than 500 schools submit entries for consideration. All entries were judged against an extensive set of criteria, with all the chosen schools having outstanding facilities, fixture programmes and coaching. Many congratulations to Mr Eaves, Head of Cricket, and our boys.

YEARS 7 AND 8 CAREERS TALK

We welcomed Mrs Nicola Wilberforce to SHS to speak to our Year 7 and Year 8 boys about careers choices. Mrs Wilberforce came with a great deal of experience in providing guidance for young people, due to her role as Director of Progression Guidance at Esher College. The talk covered the various qualifications available to boys in their future studies and the importance of starting to think about the key skills that might be required for particular careers. There was a clear emphasis expressed on the importance of being motivated and that a career involved all aspects of life, not only the job itself. Nicola went through the STAR method as a way of producing evidence for interviews and personal statements and stressed the importance of keeping a Plan B in mind if things do not work out as hoped. Her advice was very well received by the boys and they asked some superb questions.

YEAR 6 ESB INTERVIEW SKILLS

As part of their pre-test preparation, Year 6 recently took the ESB level 1 Oral Skills for School Interviews exam. The boys had to prepare a presentation about themselves, outlining their interests and strengths and what they have to offer their chosen senior school. They also had to explain why they had chosen that particular school, read a chosen extract from the School’s prospectus and answer questions from the group. The final part of the exam involved a rigorous one-to-one interview with the examiner, who posed as a representative from the future school (and who really put the boys through their paces). The entire process was more rigorous than many job interviews! The English teachers were very proud of all of the effort that the boys put into their preparations and of their excellent performances on the day. Well done to all of the boys for their outstanding results, with special mention of the following boys:

DistinctionMax Turner, Ralph Moggs, Charles Bulman, Harry Duffy, Ben Verdult, Henry Hulme and James Bell.

Congratulations to Mohammad Malikov (Year 6) who entered the London Area British Schools Regional Championships and took home a silver medal. Mohammad said that it was one of his toughest tests yet and will aim to get the gold next time.

NATIONAL INTER-SCHOOLS SCIENCE QUIZ CHAMPIONSHIP

Report by Thomas McGrath (Year 6): ‘At the end of November, Aston Frame (Year 6), Josh Jacobs (Year 5), Lucas Cornelsen (Year 5) and I travelled to Hoe Bridge School in Woking to represent the School in the Inter Schools Science Quiz Championship. We were against eight other schools and it was a closely fought contest with some challenging questions. We all worked well as a team and for a while we marched ahead in the lead. Our brains had to work very hard, trying to recall scientific facts such as the elements of the periodic table, and how many bones there are in the human body (in case you didn’t know there are 206 bones in an adult body). Whilst we did not win the quiz we all really enjoyed ourselves and we learnt so much about the wonderful world of science. Our huge thanks to Mrs Ross for taking us to this fun event.’

SHS SINGERS AT SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL

Towards the end of November, the SHS Singers travelled to Southwark Cathedral to take part in a Christmas Concert in support of Barnardo’s. The choir performed the ‘Christmas Lullaby’ by John Rutter and two additional pieces with various other choirs, composed and arranged by Douglas Coombes. The choir was singled out by Mr Coombes for having an excellent sound and good posture. It was a very successful evening as the SHS Singers rose to the occasion and performed with a real professionalism and style. A huge thank you to Mr Thomas for his work with the SHS Singers. Thanks also must go to Madame Kelk and Mr Stevenson who came with the boys and provided them with the opportunity for an odd impromptu performance around the tunnels of the Southbank; a fantastic evening!

U8A FOOTBALL AT THE AMERICAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL (ACS), COBHAM

The Under 8A team finished their football season by playing in the ACS Cobham 7-a-side tournament. The boys played some magnificent football in the group stages, winning all of their matches comfortably. In the final, the boys had a number of opportunities but could not find a winner against the hosts and drew the game 0-0. SHS were crowned winners on countback – a magnificent way to finish a first season of football at the School for a very talented group of boys.

REC ZONE

At the beginning of November, the ‘Rec Zone’ opened for the first time. Three rooms in the Year 3 block are now open at lunchtime and provide another area where the boys can retire to play during lunch break. There are two ‘play rooms’ where the boys can get stuck into board games or cards, build a marble run or play dominoes. There is also a quiet room where the boys can read, draw, paint or even try their hand at origami! The rooms have proved to be very popular this term with boys across all Year groups and there has been a wonderful, positive buzz. We are hugely grateful to the SHA for their contribution to purchasing the equipment needed for the rooms. Many thanks also to the School Council who discussed the need for more quiet space at lunch times at their very first meeting at the beginning of the term.

CHRISTMAS BAUBLE COMPETITION

There were some wonderful entries this year for the Christmas Bauble Competition, which is open to the junior boys. The time and effort that had gone into the design and construction of the decorations was evident, and there were some very creative masterpieces! The decorations adorned the SHS Christmas tree and although it was a difficult decision, the eventual winners were announced at the Final Assembly. Well done to all of the boys who entered.

HEADMASTER’S COMMENDATION

As part of the Inter-House Football event, Freddie Wolff (Year 6) suggested that the boys wear any pair of wacky football socks with their normal School games kit to raise money for ‘Children in Need’. This excellent idea was originally instigated by Freddie’s brother Charlie when he was at School here, and we were delighted to support this brilliant fundraiser once more. Boys were asked for a £2 donation for ‘Children in Need’ and Freddie helped to raise a fantastic £510. Freddie was presented with his award during Assembly and his mother Mrs Wolff was present to see him receive his certificate from Mr Doble.

QUILTER KIDS FIRST SCHOOL

Shrewsbury House are now a ‘Quilter Kids First School’. The Shrewsbury House sports staff have pledged to develop children through rugby from 7 to 13 years of age. The sports staff at School are aiming to develop the boys, allowing them to learn at their own pace, to build confidence and character and, just as importantly, to have fun whilst doing it. The green laces initiative is to recognise boys who have demonstrated the core values on or off the playing field here at School. The key five core values we adhere to at SHS are Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. Congratulations to Cameron Elliott (Year 8), Alex Simpson (Year 6) and Nicolas Draper (Year 7), who were awarded the first green laces and certificates. We look forward to seeing more green laces in action!

WELLINGTON COLLEGE JUNIOR LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Six Year 7 boys attended the Wellington College Junior Leadership Conference at the beginning of December. The boys had a full day of activities and talks by Wellington College leadership staff, with a main highlight being a Q&A session with former England Rugby World Cup-winning centre, Will Greenwood. The boys participated in a low ropes activity course, which focused on their communication and teamwork, and created projects in line with the Global Social Leaders’ ethos and goals. The boys who attended the day and represented the School impeccably were Joseph Stankovski, Finn Haldane, Charlie Babb, Lucas Starling, Noah Horne and Rufus White.

YEAR 8 VISIT THE MARY ROSE MUSEUM

In December, the History department took Year 8 down to Portsmouth to visit the Mary Rose Museum, which has become somewhat of a Shrewsbury House Year 8 annual tradition! The staff there now positively recognise our boys’ blazers and have learned to have high expectations of them and the boys delivered once again.

In their two groups, they rotated through three activities. In activity one, they all handled Tudor artefacts and learned of their significance to the ship and to wider Tudor society. In another the boys toured the actual museum, stepping through an airlock to enter the carefully controlled atmosphere of the final resting place of Henry’s flagship. Lastly, they all learned how to crew a Tudor cannon utilising teamwork, which the boys thoroughly enjoyed.

Mr Smart, Head of History, said, ‘We have taken the boys on numerous trips but this one has to be our favourite for many reasons, the main one being that this is actual history, not a replica or reproduction, and the boys respect that.’

The museum was full of praise for our Year 8 boys, speaking about their brilliant questions and knowledge of history and Latin (since they had to translate some Latin inscriptions found on the ship). Well done to the boys for being such great ambassadors of the School.

We have taken the boys on numerous trips but this one has to be our favourite for many reasons.

YEAR 3 PLAY: THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMOUSE

’Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except for a mouse! For their Christmas play, Year 3 took us on a theatrical journey exploring Christmas around the world all through the eyes of Malcolm, a little mouse who couldn’t fall asleep on Christmas Eve. The boys sang and danced their way through the Christmas traditions of Australia, China, Ethiopia, Russia, France and Mexico, with all having a fantastic time doing so! Well done to all of the Year 3 boys on a fantastic show! Thank you to Miss Barclay who directed the production, Mr Thomas and Mr Stevenson for the wonderful music and all of the Year 3 staff for their support.

Thank you to all of the families who supported the Carol Service. What a very special evening it was! The boys sung and performed magnificently in the beautiful setting of Epsom College Chapel and presented us all with an ideal start to the Festive Season. Thank you, too, for your generosity in the Retiring Collection. World Vision, the charity we are supporting this year, provides opportunities for the world’s most vulnerable children, helping to transform their lives. We are delighted to announce that £2000 was raised by the SHS community for this worthy organisation. Many thanks to Mr Thomas (Director of Music) and Mr Stevenson (Deputy Director of Music) for their musical direction, Mrs Milsom for preparing the readers, Mr Lennon, Mr Gough and Mr Keogh for their support in the brass section.
