January. Let’s not mention the weather, shall we? As an alternative, why not embrace

trivial but educational and inspirational stories about vintage, upcycled and sustainable

interior decor?

Learning about a cute table plateau, purple Almeco chairs, checking out the back of a

safari chair and orange Poulsen. The January 2014 edition of Allmoge Cushions

STORIES moves in mysterious ways.

And then you haven’t taken into consideration context boards. Qué? Well, upcycled

cushions need a context don’t they? Sitting there all by themselves won’t do them any

good. Do you dare to have a look? Warning. May contain strong colours.

Upcycling is a sign of the times. Once upon a time it would have been tricky to find the

common design denominator of an opticians’store, a fancy department store window

display, a restaurant, and a government office. Now it’s found and yes, it is spelt

upcycling.

To finish a most illustrative edition, Allmoge Cushions STORIES highlights two noteworthy

happenings. Saving the best for the end .

Happy enlightenment! Therefore starting out with precious links.

LEARNING ABOUT A CUTE

TABLE PLATEAU.

Please note – this is not a tray, it’s a table plateau. Very important to distinguish between the two. Not least because the latter sounds so much more posh and sophisticated. If you know your French, you would know that if you add an x to plateau it would mean multiples. But this is singular, so no x. Just to make things clear.

And to establish that this item is very cute and classy at the same time.

CHECKING OUT THE

BACK OF A SAFARI

CHAIR

Looks like the back of a waistcoat was my first thought when I saw this chair. How super cool!

What sort of chair is it? It’s a safari chair, designed by Dane Kaare Klint. Mr Klint passed away in 1954 and I’m thinking that the chair looks in a fab condition for being over 60 years old. Is it a remake?

Anyway, Klint was considered the father of modern Danish furniture design. And I can understand why.

15 January, 2014 PURPLE ALMECO CHAIRS

Get this feeling that I’ve been posting a lot about chairs recently. Don’t mean to be tedious but here’s one more. About purple Almeco chairs.

Almeco, what’s Almeco? Do some research. First time around I find an Almeco company that’s into aluminium products. Think ‘OK, the base of those chairs could be aluminium, but maybe not’. There’s a very industrial look about the entire website.

Have another go and slightly modify my search criteria.

ORANGE POULSEN

Orange is on my mind. In case you haven’t noticed …

I’ve posted before about finding very attractive lamp bases browsing vintage/2nd hand/auction outlets. The great, very great difficulty actually, is to find a matching lampshade.

For a change the problem is the opposite. These are lampshades, and nothing more. No holder, no base, no nothing. Only shades.

But they are orange, and they are funky, and in a fantastic condition. Designed by Louis Poulsen.

A 1930s DAYBED - JUST MY

STYLE.

I have a major weakness for Swedish 1930s Art Deco inspired furniture. All very simply stylish.

This is an Erik Chambert daybed. Do they come any more sleek and sophisticated? The variation of wood used, intarsia inlays, and the black rounded edge on the frame are details that speak loud and clear to me.

At first I was a bit sceptical about the neon blue upholstery, but after some contemplation think it …

MOVING FROM

POLYCHROME TO

CLOISONNÉ LESSONS.

t’s turning out to be a strenuous day for the old brain. First researching the meaning of polychrome. Which wasn’t what I thought it would be. How I couldn’t see that it was what it is now when I know makes me feel stupid.

But no time for hang-ups. Better move on. To cloisonné. What a beautiful word. What does it mean? Until a few hours ago I didn’t have clue. So did some research. Hard work can be stimulating for the grey matter.

11.1.14: SP Energy Technology is a Swedish department involved with research and technical evaluation in the fields of combustion technology, acoustics, building services systems, energy use in buildings and the indoor environment. Key concerns are care of the environment and an aim to achieve a sustainable energy system based on renewable resources.

One day SPET realised it was necessary to relocate and had to consider new interior design. After some toings and froings they decided to practice what they preach – sustainability. They were going reused. So far so good. But a state department works in mysterious ways; as it turned out there were no procurement procedures for buying reused.

13.1.14: Puta Madre is a Mexican restaurant. In Scandinavia. Gothenburg, Sweden to be more specific.

Not surprisingly it has a Mexican interior design theme. Being a trendy place the theme has a story. A 1920 brothel story, Mexican style obviously. There is a lot of red, including an abundance of textiles draping from the ceiling, and a solidly red carpet. All creating a warm and encompassing atmosphere.

Best of all, however, is the use of vintage furniture and other decor. Who needs to buy new when there’s so much great old stuff out there?

29.8.13: As a vintage champion, couldn’t help noticing yesterday that a fashionable department store in the city is using vintage pieces to offset their top-of-the-range merchandise.

And how appropriate. It’s look fabulous! More photos at http://bit.ly/1elsaxi

14.1.14: This is the inside of an Opticians’ store down the road from me. Fundamentally a very white, clean, sterile and functional environment.

But what a surprise it was to see their choice of chillaxing furniture! Here customers can make themselves comfortable while they wait in vintage copies of late 19th century chairs and sofas. Such a brilliant idea!

Why buy new when there’s so much great old stuff out there?
