19431. Decided the UK and USA would attack

occupied France at Normandy in 1944.2. USSR promised to help United States

against Japan3. Agreed to set up a peace keeping

organization (Will be the United Nations)4. Agreed to split Germany once it is

conquered between them

D-DAY (THE LONGEST DAY)1. On June 6th, 1944 D-Day commenced2. The Allies invaded five beaches in

Normandy 1. Juno, Sword, Omaha, Utah, & Gold2. It was the largest amphibious invasion in

history3. The Germans were caught off guard4. It was an enormous Allied victory

3. The D-Day victory allowed Allied troops access to the ground in Western Europe

1. This allowed for Allied troops to begin marching in on the Eastern and Western part of Germany

THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE1. It started December 16, 1944 just

outside of Germany1. More than 6 inches of snow on the ground2. Germany started off very strong and the

battle looked very grim for the U.S. as their troops were surrounded by Nazi’s

3. Dwight Eisenhower called on General Patton to rescue the American troops

1. Patton made incredible time with his troops through the snow and was able to rescue the American soldiers and defeat the Germans

2. The defeat for Nazi Germany allowed for the Allies to march right into Germany.

THE WAR ENDS IN EUROPE1. During the Battle of the Bulge, the

Soviets were driving Germany back on the Eastern Front.

2. The Soviets won the race with the Americans and British to Berlin

1. Hitler died on April 30th, 1945. 2. Germany officially surrendered on May

7th, 1945. 3. May 8th, 1945 was proclaimed “Victory in

Europe Day”, or “V-E Day”.

at Nuremberg, Germany following World War II

1. They were accused of crimes against humanity

2. 36 were sentenced to death3. 114 were sent to prison
