Inaugural Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network Allied Health Awards

Recently the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network Allied Health Awards were announced. Laura Doig, a senior speech pathologist from Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick took out the inaugural award. The below nomination, submitted by Laura’s colleagues, demonstrates why Laura was a worthy recipient.

"Laura is a senior Speech Pathologist working on the Community Outpatients team at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

She carries a very complex, demanding caseload, including the Aboriginal outreach caseload, working within local schools for clients with multiple and complex needs.

She is hardworking, dedicated and clinically strong, making her the perfect fit for this role. Laura is a strong advocate for her clients and for the health and educational needs of Aboriginal families in our community. She is motivated and driven; collaborating with other teams and forming partnerships in the community to best meet the needs of her clients.

She has led our team to complete many Quality Improvement activities within our Aboriginal service, including a project recently completed through the Quality Improvement Academy. Laura has collaborated with the psychology team to conduct a research project aimed at increasing the pre-literacy skills of Aboriginal children in the year before they start school.

Laura is optimistic and a supportive and encouraging team mate and an asset to our team."

Congratulations Laura!

Australian Adoption of IDDSI

The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) was founded in 2013. The goal was to develop new global standardised terminology and definitions to describe texture modified foods and thickened liquids used for individuals and dysphagia of all ages, in all care settings and all cultures.

The final IDDSI framework was released in 2015, consisting of a continuum of 8 levels (0-7). Levels are identified by numbers, text labels and colour codes. To access the IDDSI Framework go to https://iddsi.org/.

Dr Julie Cichero is an Australian speech pathologist who is co-director of the IDDSI board. In November 2018, Dr Cichero presented a webinar addressing issues relating to IDDSI specific to paediatrics in Australia, including a question and answer session. This webinar, along with other relevant videos, is available for viewing on the IDDSI YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0I9FDjwJR0L5svIGCvIqHA/featured.

Beyond Milestones Online Education Resource

Beyond Milestones is a free, online, video-based resource. This was developed utilising the skills of an expert developmental paediatrician, in conjunction with other medical professionals from Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (Randwick) and University of NSW. The aim of this teaching resource is to instruct learners in a systematic approach to critical and quality observation of normal childhood development.

To access the Beyond Milestones resource, visit http://learnpaediatrics.org/beyondmilestones (when prompted, the password is 'cunningham').

The resource compromises three components - pre-teaching assessment, teaching and post-teaching assessment. The assessment tasks are for personal evaluation only. Each component includes real life assessment videos of a developmental paediatrician performing an observational assessment of children aged between 10 months and 52 months. The video assessments have been edited and condensed to demonstrate important skills at each age in the following domains - Language, Social, Cognition, Gross Motor and Fine Motor. Associated handouts, worksheets and model answers are also provided.

Completing the full package will take approximately 6 hours in total, but each video can be viewed separately (length varies between 15 and 40 minutes).

In 2016, the Children’s Healthcare Network Allied Health Educators initiated a research study to determine the effectiveness of the Beyond Milestones e-learning resource. The research explored the effectiveness of the resource to develop the knowledge and skills of key groups of allied health professionals regarding normal childhood development and observational assessment (LNR/15/SCHN/456).

The quantitative study results indicated that the Beyond Milestones teaching modules did not significantly contribute to the development of knowledge of normal child development and skills in observational assessment for allied health professionals. Despite this, study participants perceived Beyond Milestones to be an online resource that provided an effective learning opportunity.

A copy of the evaluation report is available on the Allied to Kids website at http://www.nchn.org.au/a2k/index.html. For further details please contact one of the Allied Health Educators.

Consultation on Draft Health Literacy Framework

The Clinical Excellence Commission is developing the Health Literacy Framework for NSW Health. The Framework is designed to support frontline staff, leaders and managers to understand the scope of health literacy and the immediate importance of addressing it, and aims to be a guide to action. There are four priorities outlined in the Framework that will address health literacy at an individual, organisational and system level across NSW Health.

The draft of the Health Literacy Framework is now open for comment on the Clinical Excellence Commission webpage at http://www.cec.health.nsw.gov.au/get-involved/have-your-say/draft-health-literacy-guide/consultation-form.

Talking the Talk: A resource for professional and community workers

The ‘Talking the Talk’ toolkit is a resource developed by Children’s Health Queensland’s Child Development Program. Jenny Franklin, Speech Pathologist, led the team in collaboration and consultation with other health professionals, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and Indigenous services.

The resource aims to help professional and community health workers to establish engagement and connection with the families they serve. The toolkit provides a booklet with easy to follow steps that aim to facilitate family engagement in a ‘story telling’ way, thus enhancing understanding of their child’s strengths and challenges. It also aims to support care planning and promote children’s development through play and learning.

The booklet also provides developmental milestones (6 months to 5 years) as a guide to engage families’ awareness in their children’s development and progress.

The toolkit also contains:

5 posters (4 on developmental domains and 1 on how to ‘Create a healthy family plan’) that can be printed on A3 format, and used as general information in waiting areas or other gathering places

2 templates, aimed to facilitate engagement with the family in a non-confronting way. The ‘Child Development Summary’ - for the health worker to gather information and ‘My Child’s Development Plan’ - to assist with setting up a care plan in collaboration with the family. These templates can be photocopied as needed.

Downloadable versions of the Toolkit (booklet, posters and templates) can be found at https://www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au/chq/our-services/community-health-services/child-development-program/.

If you would like further information or advice about this resource please do not hesitate to contact the Child Development Program at [email protected] or the Child Development Connection at [email protected].

Kickstart your Child’s Eating wins Board Chair’s Choice Award

By Mikayla Madden, Community Dietitian, Wagga Wagga Health Service.

Early in 2018 our Paediatric Feeding Team consisting of dietitians, speech pathologists and an occupational therapist developed a series of group presentations. These were titled Kickstart Your Child’s Eating, aimed at parents/carers of children aged 4-6 months through to 2 years.

We had looked into already developed infant feeding programs, but found they did not fulfil our local needs, based on a small needs assessment of local paediatricians, paediatric nurses, early childhood nurses and allied health staff (both acute and community based). We identified that we wanted a multidisciplinary approach to cover the ‘what and how’ to feed children, readiness signs and understanding safety in feeding as well as sensory and motor development. Our overarching aim was to reduce the number of referrals for significant, delayed feeding issues that present to both acute services and community based therapists.

The Kickstart Your Child’s Eating series provides parents, at different stages in their child’s development, with the information and skills to feel confident in feeding their children and provide guidance on when to seek individualised supports. Our speech pathologists cover information on how babies become ready for solids and safety considerations, through to nurturing the skills required for effective feeding development over the first 2 years of life. The paediatric occupational therapist covers motor skill development, supporting and enhancing the sensory aspects of feeding and ideas on integrating play into feeding. Our dietitians provide information on expected growth, nutritional requirements, fussy eating and ways to grow competent eaters as children get older. All our clinicians have experience in managing fussy and problem feeding. We have recently had an early childhood nurse attend each of our sessions to provide more general information on health for children including breastfeeding questions, sleep concerns and oral hygiene.

The program was initially provided in 4 groups:

4-6 months – Feeding foundations

7-9 months – Starting with solids

10-12 months – Succeeding with solids

12-24 months – Mastering mealtimes

We have since combined our 7-9 month and 10-12 month groups and each 3 sessions run each school term.

In July 2018, Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) held their Excellence Awards. Our program was nominated in 4 areas and we were finalists in the following categories:

Award for Excellence

Award for Innovation

Award for Focus on Wellness

Award for Quality and Safety

We were so pleased when we were announced as the ‘Board Chair’s Choice’ Award winner on the night. The recognition for our hard work and support for infant feeding was wonderful.

Our Community Health Paediatric Feeding Team look forward to further positive feedback about the groups.

Allied Health Workplace Learning Grants Opening on 4 March 2019

The Allied Health Team, HETI is pleased to announce that the Allied Health Workplace Learning Grants program will open on Monday 4 March 2019.

The Program provides financial support to teams of allied health professionals and/or allied health assistants seeking to further develop their knowledge and skills through workplace learning opportunities. Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners working in an allied health support role will also be included for this grant.

Eligible teams are able to apply for one-off grants of up to $4000 to support access to workplace learning opportunities which will enhance their ability to perform in their current role. Additional funding will be available to rural and remote teams if requested. This aims to assist in meeting any further costs associated with location such as travel to the workplace for an educator. In addition to a grant of $4000, rural based teams may request up to $500 extra and remote based teams may request up to $1000 extra.

The 2019 Workplace Learning Grant program has been modified slightly following feedback from last year’s new process. The main changes include:

1. The submission of the approved applications by the individual contact people rather than the Director of Allied Health or delegate.

2. Nomination of a consistent local district/network closing date.

3. The full application form being uploaded rather than just some sections. Contact people will still need to enter the initial information from the form into the electronic form, but this can be done via cutting and pasting on the whole.

4. Moving the Aboriginal impact statement off the electronic form and into the selection criteria (as it was identified that there was insufficient space).

5. Increased structure around shadow work placements – as we have been finding these have been delayed due to a lack of initial agreement with the nominated site.

Further information about the Workplace Learning Grant program can be found on the HETI website at https://www.heti.nsw.gov.au/Placements-Scholarships-Grants/scholarships-and-grants/workplace-learning-grant-program.

You are also welcome to email [email protected] or to phone Sue Steele-Smith, Senior Program Officer, on 02 9844 6161 or Maria Berarducci, Senior Program Manager, on 02 9844 6504.
