Camp Go Ahead 2015 Camp Go Ahead (CGA) 2015 was held in August, another fantastic camp for all involved.

This year saw a change in venue and the team headed north to Point Wolstoncroft on Lake Macquarie. The beautiful scenery on the lake set the scene for a wonderful 3 days. 35 teens aged between 11 and 16, who have sustained an acquired brain injury, attended the camp organised by the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. CGA is open to children from all over NSW who are supported by the brain injury rehabilitation programs around the state.

The excitement started well before the arrival at camp. Campers from outside of Sydney were jubilant about going over the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the bus headed north. Faces were pressed to the windows to get a better view.

With a change in campsite came a change in the activities available and new fears and challenges needed to be faced. The high ropes course and the giant swing were two new pursuits that were definitely favourites but they also challenged the campers’ fears and abilities. The jetty into the water offered a more peaceful activity, an opportunity to sit, relax and do some fishing.

The Team from NSW Disability Sports again attended and hosted wheelchair basketball. This event put everyone on an even playing field and there was definitely a competitive vibe. However, this was

outweighed by the sportsmanship and sense of companionship that astonished everyone, as the kids supported others who needed more assistance than themselves. A huge thankyou to everyone from NSW Disability Sport for making this happen.

Sunset was a magical time at Lake Macquarie. The opportunity for free time was relished by many campers and the views were simply spectacular!

This year the evening entertainment included a music night hosted by Matt (music therapist from Sydney Children’s Hospital) and a carnival night. The music night saw the campers write their own song titled “At Camp Go Ahead” while the carnival ended in a dance off, with the campers showing their groovy dance moves.

None of this would have been possible without the staff and other volunteers who gave their time to such a great cause, as well as everyone who donated. CGA could not continue each year without their generosity and support - thank you to you all. Finally, a massive thankyou to all the children, whose enthusiasm and excellent behaviour made CGA 2015 a success.

After a terrific 3 days we all left camp with great memories, new friends and already looking forward to next year.

Getting Off to the Best Start ‘School starters: making all the right moves’, an Occupational Therapy project which focuses on gross and fine motor skills in children about to start school, won the ‘Local Solutions’ category at the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) Quality Awards in July this year.

Jacque Henderson, Occupational Therapist, Child and Family Health, NBMLHD Primary Care and Community Health says ‘School Starters’ has improved health outcomes for children identified as at risk of starting school without the requisite fine and gross motor skills by developing a reliable evaluation framework to measure improvements in key areas such as pre-writing, pencil grasp, core stability and balance.

“We have developed an evaluation framework in which the effectiveness of School Starters Groups (SSG) offered by Occupational Therapists in bringing about improvement in the key motor skills required by children as they prepare to enter school, could be convincingly demonstrated,” said Jacque.

“Motor difficulties, both fine and gross can be a significant problem at this critical time, not least because of their potential to compromise educational outcomes and subsequent life trajectories. The availability of effective programs to improve the school readiness for vulnerable children therefore brings important community benefits.”

“Feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive and parents have been able to identify improvements in their child on goals that are pre-agreed with the occupational therapist.”

Amanda Morrison’s six year old son Callum Tauasa attended SSG at Penrith Community Health Centre in term four last year and Amanda says there has been a great improvement in his fine motor skills and social skills and the group has prepared him for school by providing activities in a structured environment.

“Callum is left handed and he has increased mobility in elbows, hands and fingers, since attending the group he has improved his pencil grip and letter formation. The group environment was very positive for Callum, it made him want to do it,” said Amanda.

“I would highly recommend this program to parents with children who need support with fine and gross motor skills. It’s great because each child work on individual goals and it’s fun and they meet new friends. Callum absolutely loved it.”

Jacque says the Occupational Therapy Service is striving to provide effective, evidence-based groups to improve children’s school readiness skills.

“By developing an effective evaluation framework, we are able to act on the results and make sure programs are delivered in the best interest of children and their families,” said Jacque.

“The Occupational Therapy team are excited that this project has allowed them to collect data that demonstrates that children are making good improvements in their School Starters Groups. They are also looking forward to adding to the body of knowledge of Occupational Therapy research as they apply this evaluation framework to future School Starters Groups.”

Samuel and Alexander practice pre-writing shapes. Jacqueline Henderson, Occupational Therapist, and Sarah Annous, final year Occupational Therapy student (Western Sydney University) teach Samuel, Alexander,

Chelsea and Lucas about pre-writing shapes.

New Equipment to Benefit Children in Therapy The Rehab2Kids Team at Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH) is delighted with their new Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bike donated by the Primary Club of Australia. This is a very exciting time as we are the first paediatric hospital in NSW to have this piece of equipment.

FES is a rehabilitation technique which uses pulses of electrical current to stimulate peripheral nerves evoking muscle contractions and patterned muscle activity. FES enables muscles to work and perform activities even though the muscles may be weak or paralysed through neurological disease or injury. This means our children can participate in activities they never thought possible and receive many health benefits at the same time.

In September a training day was held for therapists who will be using the FES Bike. This day was run by 2 representatives from Restorative Therapies (company in America from which bike was purchased). It was a fantastic day in which four of our patients got to trial the bike. Feedback from all the children and the families was fantastic and they are all very keen to have another trial.

The therapists at SCH are now busy working out programs of how the FES bike can be incorporated into children's ongoing therapy and management. Research projects and ideas are also being considered to increase the evidence for this type of exercise and allow children to have their own bike in their home.

We would like to give a very big thankyou to the Primary Club of Australia who donated the bike and are providing such an amazing opportunity to these patients.

National Disability Insurance Scheme - Signing of the Bilateral Agreement On 16 September, the Prime Minister and the NSW Premier signed the Bilateral Agreement between the Commonwealth and NSW Government providing for the full transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) by 2018. This Agreement can be found at: https://www.coag.gov.au/node/525.

NSW Health has been participating at a whole of government level in planning for the full transition to the NDIS in NSW. The NDIS trial site has been the Hunter region which commenced in 2013. Michael DiRienzo, Chief Executive of Hunter New England Local Health District, provided briefings to the Senior Executive Forum and NSW Health’s joint meeting with FACS on 1 July 2015. From 1 July this year, the Nepean Blue Mountains region began early transition into the NDIS for children.

With the signing of the Bilateral Agreement, the planned NSW transition to the Scheme is as follows:

From 1 July 2016, eligible people living in Hunter New England, Southern NSW, Central Coast, Northern Sydney, South Western Sydney, Western Sydney and Nepean Blue Mountains will begin transitioning into the NDIS.

From 1 July 2017, the NDIS will be in place across the rest of NSW, and eligible people living in Northern NSW, Mid North Coast, Sydney, South Eastern Sydney, Illawarra Shoalhaven, Murrumbidgee, Western NSW and Far West NSW will begin transitioning into the NDIS.

When fully implemented, the Scheme will benefit around 140,000 people with disability across NSW. Under the NDIS arrangements the National Disability Insurance Agency will assess the eligibility of applicants and will specify packages for which the individual is eligible. Eligible individuals will then have the right to purchase services from approved providers.

Following on from a number of enquiries, NSW Health will soon be distributing a suite of information to assist health professionals and teams to transition to the NDIS.

A new website has been launched to support the implementation of the NDIS in NSW and can be viewed at www.ndis.nsw.gov.au. The NSW Government has also prepared some fact sheets to help service providers, people, their families and carers, navigate the changes that are coming to New South Wales under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Should you require further information or have any questions please email [email protected].

New Paediatric Falls Factsheet for Families and Carers The Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC) has developed a new Paediatric Falls Factsheet for families and carers. This factsheet and other resources such as the Paediatric Falls Risk Assessment Form can be found on the CEC’s NSW Falls Prevention Program Paediatric Package page at http://www.cec.health.nsw.gov.au/programs/falls-prevention/paed-falls.

A Great Place for Clinical Information - CIAP needs your comments

The Clinical Information Access Portal (CIAP) provides all healthcare professionals in the NSW public health system with free access to clinical information and resources to support evidence-based practice and clinical decision making.

Following continuing requests from NSW Health clinicians, CIAP is investigating a statewide licence for UpToDate Anywhere. Your feedback to assess the value of UpToDate in terms of content, authoritativeness and relevance to the NSW Health setting is sought through a survey running at the end of October. The survey will be available on the CIAP website from 19-30 October.

Benefits of a statewide subscription to UpToDate include stability and equity of access from multiple locations and devices. Responses to the survey will remain confidential.

Resources currently available on CIAP include medication resources MIMS and Micromedex, evidence-based practice tools Joanna Briggs Institute and the Cochrane Library, citation databases MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsycINFO, clinical decision support tools BMJ Best Practice and PEMSoft, as well as more than 2000 online journals and over 400 online textbooks. Health professionals can also access dictionaries, guidelines, clinical tools and patient handouts through CIAP.

CIAP can be accessed at work and at home, providing 24/7 access to clinical information whenever it’s needed.

Training opportunities are available from the Learning Centre, where staff can access live online training sessions, self-paced education modules and other video tutorials and user guides to help increase their CIAP skills and knowledge.

Learn more about navigating the homepage and which resources to use by watching the short video tours available at the bottom right of the CIAP homepage. To access CIAP, visit the website www.ciap.health.nsw.gov.au.
