MIL-DTL-5015 Series III

The MIL-DTL-5015 Series III connectors provide aerospace performance and reliability for general purposepower inter-connection requirements. Originally a World War II solder connector, its revision since then hasresulted in a 5015 series of widespread use in applications requiring gauges 0 to 16. There are 19 shell sizesfrom size 8 to 40, with over 159 approved insert arrangements per MIL-STD-1651, incorporating 1 to 854 box

mount, cable connecting and jam nut receptacles, and standard or self-locking plugs. The hard plasticsocket interface features the chamfered conical entry that aids in the proper mating of contacts. The

fluorosilicone interfacial seal has conical risers around each pin contact, that compress into the socketinterface, assuring the seal of the mating surface. Various shell materials and finishes are available.

MIL-DTL-5015 Insert Contacts, Service Rating & Clocking Positions

NORMAL POSITION - the centerline of theface view of the insert pattern is alignedwith the shell key on the plug and keywayon the receptacle. Angle A on the abovedrawing would be at zero degrees.

ALTERNATE POSITION - the centerline ofthe face view of the insert pattern is rotatedin relationship to the shell key on the plugand keyway on the receptacle. Pin keyinserts are rotated clockwise (CW). Forexample, a 14S-7 pin insert layout in the Xposition would have an angle A of 180degrees.

Insert arrangements for all MIL-DTL-5015 Series III are the same. The insert arrangements are made bycombining the shell size (first two numbers) with the insert arrangement number (last two numbers). For

example, a MS3454L14-3P is a shell size 14 with a 3 insert for a 14-3 insert arrangement. Insertarrangements are shown in numerical order by shell size and number of contacts in each shell size.

MIL-DTL-83723 Series III

The MIL-DTL-83723 Series III has both bayonet and threaded coupling configurations to meet both generalpurpose and swamp applications when excessive moisture, fluids, shock, and vibration exposure require athreaded connector. It is available in nine shell sizes with either square flange or jam nut receptacles,standard or RFI plugs in both bayonet and threaded versions. There are thirty insert arrangements using 2 to61 contacts. 20, 16, and 12 gauge contact sizes terminate wire gauges 24 through 12. The hard plastic socketinterface features the chamfered conical entry that aids in the proper contact mating. The fluorosiliconeinterfacial seal has conical risers around each pin contact that compress into the socket interface to ensurethe seal of the mating surface. Black anodize, electroless nickel, and chromate over cadmium finishes areavailable for the aluminum shells.

MIL-DTL-26500

The MIL-DTL-26500 connectors are available in bayonet and threaded coupling configurations forboth general purpose and swamp applications where the excessive moisture, shock, fluids, andvibration exposure require a threaded connector. The bayonet coupling version employs threeramps at a 120 degree angle, equally spaced to make the connector quicker to mate than otherconnectors. 20,16, and 12 gauge contact sizes terminate wire 24 through 12 gauge.Environmental sealing is provide by an O-ring seal and displacement of the resilient interfaceswhen the connectors are mated, as well as redundant rear wiper seals around each wire. Thefluorosilicone resilient materials provide superior protection when exposed to a wide variety offluids. The non-conductive black anodize surface treatment on the aluminum shells creates anexceptionally hard finish that prolongs connector life and exceeds salt spray test requirements.

Background

The cause of failure on an aircraft external power receptacle connector is the coupling method betweenthe aircraft ground receptacle and the ground power plug. The physical engagement of the electricalcontact pins on the aircraft fixed connector and the socket contacts on the ground supply freeconnector maintains the external power connector's coupling causing this failure. The sphincter orgrabbing action of the high force socket contacts within the ground supply free connector causespremature excess wear on the pin contacts contained in the aircraft fixed connector. Additional failureis caused by the sheer weight of the ground supply free connector, which pulls down on the electricalinterface causing arcing when the power is on. Replacement of either the aircraft fixed connectorand/or the ground supply free connector is a significant loss to the airline and/or airport. The MS90362-3 aircraft power saver receptacle shown above mates with the aircraft external power receptacleconnector shown below.

Solution

The factory has devised an adapter or Aircraft Ground Saver Connector which essentially bears thebrunt of the normal in use abuse described. This adapter requires no special provisions (such asmounting holes) for attachment to the external ground power interface, the user merely mates theadapter to the external ground power receptacle and tightens four screws which are an integral part ofthe Aircraft Ground Power Saver Connector assembly. Extensive testing has proven that the addition ofthe Aircraft Ground Power Saver Connector provides improved electrical performance to the matedexternal power receptacle and ground supply free plug connectors. To remove a worn out adapter, thedescribed screws are loosened then the two ejector screws are tightened and the adapter can then bereplaced.

By the addition of the Aircraft Ground Power Saver Connector, the existing external power connectionis electrically enhanced. More importantly, the Aircraft Ground Power Saver Connector will be thesource of any wear caused by arcing and/or repeated coupling and uncoupling of the ground supply freepower plug to the fixed power receptacle. Also, the user friendliness of replacing (installing andremoving) the Aircraft Ground Power Saver Connector significantly lower maintenance costs to both theairlines and airports.
