October 18, 2013 TO: ALL SHERIFFS WITH DIRECT JAIL OVERSIGHT FROM: STEVE CASEY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RE: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - 2014 FSA CORRECTIONS OFFICER OF THE YEAR For more than a decade, the Florida Sheriffs Association (FSA) has presented an annual "Corrections Officer of the Year" Award to a deserving candidate. The FSA recognizes the importance of corrections to the Sheriffs of Florida and by bestowing this award intend to raise the profile of the corrections profession in our state. The FSA is seeking your nomination for the 2014 Corrections Officer of the Year. Each Sheriff that manages a jail is allowed to submit one nomination, with the exception of a team effort by two individuals. In that event, a team nomination will be treated as one nomination. The criteria may include, but not be limited to:

• One or more heroic acts • High personal standards and service above and beyond the call of duty • Technical excellence in corrections • Innovation/initiative in creating a new or innovative jail management program(s) • Other exemplary performance as deemed by the Sheriff • Lifetime achievement

The act(s) for which a nomination is made should have been accomplished during calendar year 2013. However, nominations may be submitted for a Lifetime Achievement award, in which event the acts would be over the career of the individual being nominated. The Lifetime Achievement award honors individuals for his/her significant and creative contributions to the field of corrections. If you wish to nominate a correctional officer for the Lifetime Achievement Award, please note that your recommendation is for this award on the application. The 2014 Corrections Officer of the Year will be invited (along with his/her guest) to the 2014 FSA Winter Conference Banquet where he/she will be presented with a plaque and a check for $2,000. FSA will provide one night’s lodging for the Officer of the Year at the conference hotel.

The Winter Conference is located at the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort, 9300 Emerald Coast Parkway West, Destin, FL 32550. Attached is the nomination form for the 2014 Correctional Officer of the Year. You are encouraged to provide supporting documentation (newspaper clippings, commendations, etc.) to supplement the nomination package. To facilitate the work of the screening committee, please send an original and three copies of the nomination packet. DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS: To receive equal consideration by our screening committee, all nomination forms must be received at FSA Headquarters no later than Wednesday, November 20, 2013.
