The Navity of St. John the Bapst!
Tiny fingers and toes. A lile yawn. A loud cry.
An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes.
"What will this child be?" It is a queson every
parent asks me and me again. As first steps
are taken, as personalies emerge, as a child
shows interest in reading or drawing or climb-
ing, the queson is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This queson is
asked as John the Bapst is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his
strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could
Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be?!
Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an
adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would
aract a large following and eventually aract the aenon of the rulers of
the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would
find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is a
child, an infant newly born.!
On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of par-
ents. The character formaon, the discipline and encouragement, the violin
lessons and soccer pracces ? every parental effort is subjected to the deci-
sions of the child themself. Even children on a sure track by high school grad-
uaon transform under life's circumstances. Entrusng our children to God
can be incredibly inmidang. "What will this child be," especially when that
transformaon lies outside of my control? John the Bapst's story might not
have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of
the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the
hope of all Chrisan parents that our children would be raised in such a
way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ.!

Belonging!Bapsmal Preparaon in All Saints Parish!
All Saints Parish is launching a new opportunity for expectant
parents in preparing for the bapsm of their child and
supporng their child in their faith development. To that end,
we have created two teams, one at St. Patrick’s Church and one
at St. Charles Borromeo Church. The goal of the sessions and the
following reflecon experiences are to provide our expectant
parents and their families with the support of other parishioners
and our broader faith community in establishing a family that
encourages growth in faith. Though the teams have structured
me frames that may appear a bit different, both groups hope
to offer support and a sense of belonging to not only the
children to be bapzed, but for the families as well. To register

LOCAL SENIORS!!!
SEARCH (Seek Elderly Alone, Renew Courage & Hope) is a local program based right here in our own community and administered by Catholic Charies Maine. SEARCH matches volunteers oneonone with seniors who may live alone to provide companionship, transportaon, and assistance with errands or household projects. We serve isolated seniors in Sagadahoc and Lincoln County as well as Brunswick and Harpswell. A few hours a week of your me can help one of your neighbors “age in place” in their own home and remain acve community members. We are also looking for volunteers to serve on our adviso-ry commiee to help support and strengthen our pro-gram. Contact: Chris Szalay, Program Coordinator at 8378810 or [email protected].!
