Young People and Christian Service It is always encouraging to hear of young people who are engaging in short-term Christian service abroad. Eric and Hazel Youlton's grand-sons, Edward and Nathan, both 18, are doing just that. Edward, who will be off to Sheffield University in September to read Law and Criminology, is currently involved in a four-month project teaching Maths and English to young people in Sierra Leone. Edward is a member of the congregation at St James, Muswell Hill. His brother Nathan, who will be off to University College of Wales, Aberystwyth to study Sports Science, is presently in Temuco, Chile engaged in a building project with Latin Link. Later he will be helping with youth work in local churches. Nathan is a member of All Saints, Crowborough. If any of our youngsters would like to explore opportunities for Christian experience abroad, have a word with Derek Osborn or James Clarke.

From the Editor May I ask all leaders of organisations or groups to include me on their circulation list when new programmes are published. This applies only to groups who want their activity put in the Diary or news section of All Saints’ News.

GROWING A CARING CHURCH

As a body of believers, we all have a responsibility to encourage one another and to create a climate in which everybody can be

personal and in the local church. This is an important training event for all leaders of groups and

anyone with a heart for the care and well being of others.

The International Bible Training Institute is an independent Pentecostal College established over 50 years ago. It provides training for young men and women, called of God from all over the world, and equips them to go out to work in His vast harvest field. Students have come from over 100 different countries and many are now leaders in various fields of Christian ministry - preaching, teaching, evangelism, education and helping in many deprived areas through social and relief work. Give thanks for: The heritage of the past 50 years and the vision and energy of John and Doreen Wildrianne. The faithfulness and vision of all who lead and teach. Seeing the seeds sown in the students growing into strong trees that produce much fruit and

further seeds. Pray for: More students to apply and enrol for the next academic year Favour with their Governments for visas to be granted Stability and continuity for IBTI through the present period of structural change Faith in God to provide the fees and financial provision for the school, the students and the

Spring Must be Round the Corner . . . Churchyard Working Party Everyone is welcome to help us with a pre-Easter clean-up of the churchyard. The working party is on Saturday 9 April between 8.30am and 11am. We appreciate there are a number of things on that day, so to enable more of us to be available we suggest the earlier start of 8.30am. Just turn up when you can! Martyn Taylor and Alan Carter

'The Big Society' The annual spring clean of the village, organised by the Parish Council, will take place Saturday morning 9 April. If you or family members would like to volunteer then turn up at the King Edward Hall around 9.30am. Any children involved must be supervised by a parent. For further details please speak to Bob Priestley. John Mummery

Of course for those who have the energy and the inclination you can practise tidying skills in the churchyard and then roll down the High Street and clean the rest of the village! (Ed.)

Page 4: All Saints eNews 27th march 2011

Have you got it? Do you know where it is? NADFAS, the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies, specifically the Mid Sussex Branch, carried out a detailed record of the All Saints’ Church furnishings over a four year period ending in 2005. This was an excellent piece of work in three volumes and a copy was presented to the Church at that time. We have Volume 1 (Memorials and Stonework) and Volume 3 (Library and Windows) but Volume 2 (Woodwork, Textiles and Paintings) is missing. It is possible that someone in the Church family has borrowed it – if so, or if you know anything about its whereabouts, could you please let the Church Office know. Alan Carter

Prayer for Good News Club There is to be a special opportunity to pray together for the Good News Club (children up to 11 years old). We will meet at 5pm in the Tiger Lounge on Sunday 3 April. This time of prayer will end in plenty of time before the Evening Service. Everyone welcome. Peter Ford

Sextons We have a rota of sextons for each service so that duties only occur about once a month and we currently have a vacancy for our 9.30am Sunday service. Sextons help prepare the church for services by placing the silver crosses and candlesticks on the Holy Table, lighting the candles and setting out the communion vessels and linen if required. They locate readings and mark the places in the lectern bible and also provide glasses of water for clergy and carafes of water at the back of the church. At the end of the service they clear away unless there is another service following immediately. This is an essential behind the scenes job which is not onerous but does require the ability to carry moderately heavy objects.

If you think you could help or would like to know more please contact me to discuss.-

Isobel Jones on 458330 or e.mail [email protected]

Tiger Kitchens Following inspections by an MSDC Food Safety Officer we are required to make some changes to the way we prepare food in the two Tiger kitchens: Upstairs Tiger Kitchen Upgrade The old kitchen cupboards, work surfaces, flooring and table must be removed and replaced with more modern items. Equipment and furniture has been ordered and we aim to carry out the work during the school Easter holidays. We would welcome offers of help to assist in clearing the room, redecorating and building in the new units. If you can help please contact John Phillips (tel 482756). New Appointment – Kitchen Supervisor To help us to comply with current legislation the PCC would like to appoint a Kitchen Supervisor, who would oversee our procedures for cooking and food preparation in both kitchens. This post does not mean getting involved in day to day use of the kitchens but rather to be the focal point for co-ordinating activities, particularly ensuring the necessary training is undertaken. Ideally, we would like to appoint someone with catering experience who is prepared to undertake this role on a voluntary basis. If you can help please contact either Ken Markham in the Church Office or Alan Carter (tel 483136).

Tiger Kitchen Table When the improvements to the upstairs Tiger kitchen happen over the Easter holidays, there will be no room for the grand old wooden table that has been there for many years. If anyone would like to have it, for an appropriate donation to church funds, please contact Ken Markham in the Church Office.

Easter lilies We are starting the collection for Easter lilies in memory of loved ones. If you would like to dedicate lilies at Easter in memory of loved ones, please pick up an envelope on the table at the back of the Church marked 'Easter lilies', complete the form inside and place it back in the envelope with your donation. Please place the envelope in the Tiger letterbox. We will decorate the Church at Easter with these lilies and the names will be on a dedication list placed in the Memorial Chapel at Easter. Fiona Laine

Easter Fun Morning We will be holding another Easter Fun morning, with games, dancing, bible teaching, craft, songs and loads of fun. It’s for children from reception to Year 6. It will take place on the 20 April in the Tiger Hall. Please spread the word around Lindfield and the schools! If your child would like to come please call the Church Office to book a place. We will also need lots of helpers otherwise it won't be able to happen. Help needed from registration to refreshments to leading a small group. Please let Steve Ransley know if you can help, or sign up on the sheet in the foyer.

Barn Dance for Tanzania! REMINDER: Don’t miss the Barn Dance for Tanzania!

7pm–11pm, Saturday 16 April at Great Walstead. Tickets available from the Church Office (£7.50 - adults; £5 - children; £20 -

family ticket). Also more dates to book in your diary:

Saturday 7 May – a Tanzanian Charity Ball (including a three course meal and ballroom dancing) at Great Walstead, tickets £25

per head, book a table of 8 (contact Derek and Ruth Osborn). Saturday 18 June - Strawberry tea and auction of promises (5pm – 8pm) in the Tiger. Offers of promises and items for auction to Peter

Ford please. Derek Osborn

Annual Church Meeting This is a very important meeting (technically two meetings but effectively only one!) for every member of the church.

So please book the evening of Monday 11 April in your diary and be sure to come. It’s a chance for you to make

your voice heard and to put forward thoughts and suggestions.

The meeting is in church, starting at 7.45pm. There is a varied programme in which we receive reports on church activities through the past year, hear about plans for the

year ahead and elect churchwardens, members of PCC and other Officers for the coming year. This year we also elect members of Deanery Synod for the next three-year cycle. And there’s a free-for-all Question/Comment time so that

everyone can be involved. To be eligible to vote, your name must be on the church’s Electoral Roll by today (27 March). There are application

forms at the back of church. Is God calling you to stand for membership of the PCC or as

one of the other Officers of the church? Or is there someone else whom you think is ideally gifted for serving

in this way? There are Nomination Forms at the back of church as well.

Let us each be thinking and praying about how we can show our support for All Saints, as together we seek God’s

way forward for us as a body of his people in Lindfield. Ken Markham
