AREA CATHOLICS TO AID VICTIMS OF EXPLOSION

IN BEIRUT, LEBANON At the request of Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, a collection to assist relief efforts in the aftermath of the deadly August 4 explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, will be taken up in parishes throughout the 14 counties of the Diocese of Albany on the weekend of September 12-13, 2020. All proceeds will be sent to Catholic Relief Services, which will then forward donations to their partner on the ground, Caritas-Lebanon, to provide emergency food, shelter, medicine, and more in the affected area. “The massive explosion in Beirut injured more than 5,000 people and killed more than 200. The before and after images of the area are devastating. Nothing was untouched. As a result, our brothers and sisters in that region desperately need our assistance,” said Bishop Scharfenberger. “I also ask that you remember them in prayer as they face the monumental task of rebuilding their lives and their neighborhood.” For those who are unable to attend Mass, donations will be accepted online through CRS at https://www.crs.org

Watch 10:30am Sunday Mass LIVE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLBDtglKRr4

Two months ago, over July 4th

weekend, we reopened our church

and began celebrating two weekend

Masses each week. Although doing

so comes with a list of rules and

regulations I could never have

imagined, it is so nice to have people

back in church, even if all of our

faces are covered with masks. Trust

me when I say that it took a lot of

planning and organizing to get to the

point where we could reopen our

church doors and that would not

have happened if it hadn’t been for

the hard work of a committee of

parishioners that was formed just for

that purpose.

It was back in May when these

women and men first began video

conferencing to take on this task and

I will be forever grateful to each of

them for it. Their dedication and

commitment has helped our parish

move forward during a very difficult

time and all of us are safer because

of it. The guidelines issued by the

state are extensive. Putting together

a comprehensive plan that addressed

them was difficult but the committee

worked hard at it and by July 4th,

we were able to file a copy of that

plan with the state and submit

another copy to the diocese asking

for permission to reopen.

Below is a list of all of the people

who joined this committee and have

given, and continue to give, so

generously of their time and talent

so that we could reopen the doors to

our church. It was not easy work or

anything that anyone would call fun

but they rose to the occasion. I

thank them for that. I also thank

them for the expertise they brought

to the conversation, the respect they

had for each other when all of this

was getting hammered out and the

concern for the safety and wellbeing

of our parish community and greater

community around us. If you have a

moment, prayerfully read over their

names and thank God for the

blessing they have been to each of

us at All Saints Catholic Church. I

sincerely could not have done it

without them.
