Duo to ride for cancer battle All in the family OHS soccer outlook has potential The 2009 Oakwood High School men’s soccer team enters the upcom- ing season as the reigning 2008 SWBL co-champs and number one sectional seated team. The 2008 squad shared the league crown for the first time in over 15 years. To continue with the Oakwood Men’s Soccer tradition, the coaching staff of head coach Jeremy Storost, and coach’s Reade Faulkner and Kyle Duwel will need to replace several key players from last year’s 13-2-2 squad. To accomplish this task, the men’s team returns 13 varsity let- termen, including six starters. The losses will be countered by a talented group of six newcomers from last years JV squad. Oakwood return’s a strong defense anchored by senior Captain Goal Keeper Scott Harmon and junior Keeper Ryan McFarland, senior defender’s Tim Fecher and Tyler Henry-Payne, and sophomore defenders Andrew Dickerson and Zach Harmony. Newcomer’s junior Harrison Davis and sophomores Ben Georgin, Luke Green and Dylan Kooser will help bolster a defense that was one of the top in the league. Midfield will be led by senior Captain’s Zach Rodabaugh and Graham Roberts and senior Marcel Georgin, along with speedy junior David Shephard, junior Tyler Walter and sophomore newcomer’s Max Snyder and Alex Gardner. Leading the offense will be centered around senior forward’s Andrew Wade and Anthony “Tino” Weckerling. The team faced a challeng- ing pre-season schedule by play- ing in the top division of the Ohio Cup, held in Columbus. The team played superb against Wayne, Northmont, Pickerington Central and Elizabethtown, PA. Pre-season duel matches included scrimmages with Fairmont, Miami Valley School, Archbishop Alter along with the always challenging yet entertaining Oakwood Men’s Alumni Team. This years schedule should pre- pare the team well for post sea- son play with a challenging non- conference schedule which includes Chaminade Julienne, Tipp City, Waynesville, and Dayton Christian, as well as dual games with archri- val and league co-champ Bellbrook Eagles. The season gets to kick off the week of Aug. 24 with home games with Valley View and Eaton. On Saturday, Aug. 29, two Oakwood High School alumni and bicyclists will embark on a 100-mile journey, taking part in the Pelotonia Bicycle Tour for Cancer Research. Kipp Seidl (OHS Class of ’82) and Lance Stewart (OHS Class of ’72) will join over 2076 other riders on a cross country bike run starting from Columbus, Ohio and end- ing in Athens, Ohio. The tour is an annual fundraiser for the James Cancer Research Center, a major national research facility located in Columbus, Ohio. Kipp is riding in honor of his Mother Pam, who is currently bat- tling head and neck cancer. Pam Seidl is the wife of former OHS teacher and wrestling coach Chip Seidl. As for Lance, “I’m riding for the two bravest people I’ve ever known in my life: my sister Candy, who died at the age of 16 in 1968, and my father Ray, who died at the age of 67 in 1992, both from cancer, and my dear friend Pam Seidl, who is currently battling cancer. It’s a very special opportunity to do something special,” Stewart said. Both riders have garnered a total of over $6000 in pledges. Among the companies and individuals donating are RE/MAX Team Kooz, Uniglobe VIP, Sorrell Search Inc., Rich Gowdy, Howard Sales, William Koch, Bill Tant, Bill Wilkinson, Barb Wilson Schadle, Lance Pryor, Margot Hadley and the Wohrmeyer family. Also on the bill at the beginning of the tour is Olympic Champion bicy- clist Lance Armstrong. According to Lance Stewart, Armstrong will be giving a pep talk on Friday, followed by an inaugural ride for the first 25 miles on Saturday.
