How to Get Ready

The PALS Course is designed to teach you the lifesaving skills required to be both a team member and a team leader in either an in-hospital or out-of-hospital setting. Because the PALS Course covers extensive material in a short time, you will need to prepare for the course beforehand. Precourse Requirements: You should prepare for the course by doing the following:

1. Precourse Preparation: Thoroughly read and understand all PALS course requirements. See the Precourse Preparation Checklist that came with your PALS Provider Manual. Or, you can find a copy attached to this document. The following are part of the Precourse Preparation Checklist:

• Be able to perform high-quality CPR and use an AED (PALS Manual Part 2)

• Review learning and testing station competency checklists (pgs. 299 - 330 in your New Guidelines 2015 PALS Provider Manual).

• Understand the PALS algorithms and flowhcarts for the case scenarios in the PALS Provider Manual.

2. Precourse Self-Assessment: It is REQUIRED you complete the Precourse Self-Assessment on the Student Website (www.heart.org/eccstudent). You will find the Student Website access code at the beginning of the new PALS Provider Manual (page ii).Use this assessment to identify areas where you need to increase your knowledge.

***The rhythms displayed in the Rhythm Identification section of the Precourse Self-Assessment can be paused by clicking on the strip twice. One click will bring up a measuring device. The second click will pause the rhythm so you can analyze it more carefully.

3. You will need to provide proof of passing the Precourse Self-Assessment, at class. A passing score of 70%, or above, is required. You can take the Precourse Self-Assessment as many times as needed to achieve a passing score. Take a picture with your phone of the results page and show it at class. If you choose to print the completed assessment, you only need to print the results page. You can also copy and paste the results page and email it to [email protected]. You will not be allowed into the PALS class without proof of meeting this requirement.

4. Review and understand the information in your PALS Provider Manual. Part 1 (page 1 to page 14) gives you a course overview and explains in detail what you can expect for the course. Review “Course Completion Requirements” on page 10.

5. PALS algorithms and flowcharts: Be familiar with PALS algorithms so that you can apply

them to clinical scenarios – especially as the team leader role in the Megacode Skills test. Successful completion of the PALS Provider and Renewal Course requires all students pass the Megacode Skills test in the role of the team leader for 2 case scenarios.

6. Supplement your knowledge: Review and understand the information in the PALS Provider Manual and view the videos on the Student Website. In addition, review the example Practice and Testing Checklists starting on page 299 of the new PALS Provider Manual.

7. PALS Written Test preparation: Completion of the Precourse Self-Assessment will help

you prepare for the PALS Written Test. The written test is a timed, open-resource test with 50 multiple-choice questions.

What This Course Does Not Cover The PALS Provider Course does not teach CPR, ECG rhythm recognition, PALS pharmacology or algorithms. If you do not understand the ECG and if you do not learn and understand the ECG and pharmacology information in the Precourse Self-Assessment, it is unlikely that you can successfully complete the PALS Provider / Renewal Course. You will not be taught how to read or interpret ECG rhythms in the course, nor will you be taught details about PALS pharmacology. As the team leader, you will be required to identify ECG rhythms as they are displayed on the monitor during the Megacode Test.
