We hope you enjoy another great issue and, if you can make it down to the Prince of Wales Stadium this Sunday, there are two cracking matches on offer with the first team taking on North Wales Crusaders in Kingstone Press League 1 followed by our young up and coming players in action against West Wales Raiders in the Conference League South.

We are, of course, on our own crusade down here in Gloucestershire, with the aim of embedding the great sport of rugby league in the heart of union territory.

It can be hard work, there is still suspicion out there, and those of you who have followed our story for a while will be well aware of the story of the Prince of Wales Stadium, which had in its deeds the line that rugby league should never be played on the site.

Thankfully we managed to get over that initial barrier, and with the success of our Sky Try community initiative we seem to be winning over lots of young people in the locality.

The launch of our Small Golds clubs

in Cheltenham and Gloucester has gone exceptionally well in the past month and we are hopeful that some of these new players will come and enjoy the professional sport at the Prince of Wales stadium over the summer.

We look forward to the days when Gloucestershire is as positively associated with rugby league as it is with so many other great sports.

Is there another county that can look back on such a great sporting history?

We host the oldest Olympic competition in the world in Chipping Camden; the most bizarre, water-borne annual football match at Bourton on the Water; the world’s only surviving Cheese Roll on Cooper’s Hill (Italians’ claim that the ruzzolone is older but at best this is a pale, cheesy imitation); some of the most beautiful cricket

grounds in the world; the world’s only vegan professional football club (which is also the most successful professional football club in the world based on league position in relation to population); the world’s best horse racing festival; the world famous Prescott Hill racing track; Badminton and the horse trials; and one of the country’s most traditional and charismatic rugby grounds at Kingsholm.

There is the lovely statistic about Gloucestershire’s imagined appearance on the 2012 Olympic medals table, the success of the Rugby World Cup, the stories of WG Grace, the romance of Cheltenham Town and their roller coaster years since the end of the C20th, and the great history of the original All Golds and their famous visit to the county in 1908.

And now we have the only professional rugby league club anywhere in the world to be owned by a university. So our own little slice of originality. We hope this adds some spice to the Gloucestershire mix and can soon

be regarded as one of its key ingredients. Watch this space!

Thanks as ever to our editor Chris Wilson for such a fantastic job; to regular contributors Patrick Baines, Lewis Mitchell and Lionel Hurst; and of course to the amazing Craig Paul Design.

Fans will first see evidence of the partnership as the England team proudly wear their playing kit featuring the Kingstone Press logo when they take on the No. 1 ranked team in the World, New Zealand. That match is at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday October 29. England will also be in action against Scotland at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry and Australia at Olympic Park. The Four Nations final will be played at Anfield, Liverpool.

RFL Commercial Director Chris Rawlings said: “Following on from last year’s International Series win against New Zealand, 2016 is an important period for England Rugby League as they look to build on that success. Having Kingstone Press on

10RFL AND HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS STATEMENT

It is with regret that Huddersfield Giants wish to inform everyone of the passing of 17 year old academy player Ronan Costello today [Tuesday 14 June]. Ronan was airlifted to the LGI on Saturday afternoon after he was injured during the Giants academy game with Salford. The Club have been asked by the family to send their thanks for the messages of support they have received to date and have requested that all well-wishers now allow them to grieve and respect their privacy.

The Huddersfield Giants are collating all messages, cards

and tweets that they receive to pass to the family at the appropriate time.

RFL Chief Executive, Nigel Wood, said: “We are all incredibly saddened by news of the death of Huddersfield Giants Academy player Ronan Costello. It is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with Ronan’s family and friends at this time.

“We will work with both clubs involved in the game to ensure that the players, their families and friends are fully supported by the RFL Benevolent Fund and through Sporting Chance.”

COSTELLO FAMILY STATEMENT

We are absolutely devastated to lose Ronan so tragically and suddenly. Ronan was a loving and caring 17 year old lad who was dedicated to his family and friends. He was a credit to all of his family and we are so proud of him and his achievements. He was passionate about rugby and rugby was a big part of his life. We acknowledge that this was a tragic accident. As a family, we wish to extend our appreciation to Leeds General Infirmary’s Neuro Intensive Care Unit for their

dedication, respect and efforts in caring for Ronan and to The Giants, especially Andy and Richard who have been a great support to us all during such a difficult time. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us but we now need some privacy and time to grieve.

We are all truly heartbroken and Ronan will be missed and forever in our hearts.

A MINUTE’S APPLAUSE TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND Following discussion with the family of Ronan Costello, the RFL have asked that all Rugby League clubs across the country hold a minute’s applause at every game taking place this weekend to celebrate the life of the Huddersfield Giants Academy player who tragically passed away yesterday.

12The pressure was on All Golds’ head coach Lee Greenwood’s new-look side after a run of seven straight defeats but a commanding second half display blew the Stags away.

Greenwood was content after the game but warned that his side will have to improve when they face the Crusaders who are chasing a place inside the top eight.

“As the game against Hemel wore on we got better which

I was expecting given there were six new players in the 17,” said Greenwood.

“I’d have taken a one-point win given the run we’d been on so to win by 30 points was pleasing. I’d imagine most of the lads that played at Hemel will keep their place in the team,” he added.

“Sunday is a big game for us. We’ve beaten Crusaders earlier in the season and they’ve brought some players in since then. They’re a good team, a group of lads who play for each other.

“It will be a tough game but I’m confident we can get the two points and push on up the table.”

Mick Govin is struggling to make Sunday’s game after picking up an injury at Hemel. Other than that, Greenwood

has a fully fit squad to chose from for the game against ninth-placed Crusaders.

The Crusaders have coped admirably since their early season off-field troubles which resulted in a number of high profile names leaving the club. Since then they have had some impressive results, notably a 16-16 draw against promotion chasing York. The side from Wrexham come into the game off the back off a narrow defeat to Keighley last weekend.

The last time these two sides squared off was in the Challenge Cup earlier in the season. The Crusaders, on home soil, looked to have the game won at 36-16 but Harry Kidd went over with just ten seconds to go to pull off a quite astonishing late comeback for the All Golds.

RAIDED!

ALL GOLDS 16-52 BARROW RAIDERSSunday 5 June, Prince of Wales Stadium

WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON

After matching Barrow in the first half, the All Golds subsided to a dismal defeat at the PoW. Head Coach Lee Greenwood was scathing in his assessment of the performance and indicated that changes would be made.

Tries from Brendon Newton, off Jimmy Rowland’s clever inside kick, emergency centre Joe McClean and Emmerson Whittel sent the sides into the sheds at

16-16 and though neither had played particularly well, there was hope that if the All Golds could step up a gear, they could secure a memorable win.

However, Barrow scored in the first minute of the second half and the All Golds folded. The Raiders scored five more tries with former Leigh wing Cameron Pitman helping himself to a hat-trick.

It was increasingly desperate stuff with the numbers telling a sorry tale of a 50% completion rate and six penalties conceded against three awarded.

Stand off Jack Mitchell was perhaps the All Golds’ best marking a promising debut with a composed display behind a beaten pack, in which even the usually effervescent Steve Parry was subdued.

TEAM: Brendon Newton; Josh Allison, Lewis Reece, Joe McClean, Phil Cowburn; Jack Mitchell, James Rowland; Morgan Evans, Steve Parry (Capt.), Alex Davidson; Zack McComb, Emmerson Whittel; Almer Tagayuna.

INTERCHANGE: Matt Bradley, Lamont Bryan, Ollie Purslow, James Walter.

THE TURNING POINT?

HEMEL STAGS 18-48 ALL GOLDS Sunday 12 June, Pennine Way

WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON

Once upon a time, the Stags were the All Golds’ bogey side but after three consecutive wins over the men from Hertfordshire, that could have changed. Last season’s win at Pennine Way was an edge of the seat thriller but this was a much more confident affair.

An end to end first period saw Jack Mitchell’s first two tries for the club and the first of Lewis Reece’s hat-trick but the All Golds were trailing 18-14 as time ticked down.

The Stags made a mess of the restart after Liam O’Callaghan had put them ahead for the third time in the half, conceded a goal-line dropout and then a penalty as the kick went out on the full. The All Golds rolled the dice, went for a

try and Josh Allison broke a poor tackle out wide to score.

Kieran Hyde added the goal and the scrum half was to be the fulcrum of a dominant second half performance by the All Golds who kept the Stags scoreless and increasingly frustrated as the penalty count against them rose.

There were four yellow cards - with Dale Cunniffe becoming the first All Gold to receive two in one game - and two for the Stags as tempers flared.

With the Hemel defence expecting a kick, Hyde scored an easy try, sauntering through a huge gap before Lamont Bryan’s line break was finished by Mo Agoro on debut. Reece completed his hat-trick with two tries, the first from a brilliant Joe McClean offload, and Steve Parry scored in the last minute.

With six newcomers in the 17, the game would either be a triumph or tragedy and with Hyde pulling the strings, it was the former. Mitchell built on his promising first outing against Barrow with another composed performance and the others on debut, Mick Govin, Jamel Goodall and Brad Hill, all contributed to a comprehensive victory, which could prove to be a turning point in the All Golds’ fortunes this season.

TEAM: Phil Cowburn; Mo Agoro, Josh Allison, Lewis Reece, Chris Barlow; Jack Mitchell, Kieran Hyde; Ollie Purslow, Steve Parry (Capt.), Morgan Evans; Lamont Bryan, Joe McClean; Emmerson Whittel;

INTERCHANGE:Mick Govin, Dale Cunniffe, Jamel Goodall, Brad Hill.

Cronulla Sharks thrilled the audience with a superb win over World Club and Australian champions North Queensland Cowboys.

A personal favourite last weekend was the sight of a packed and resplendent Stade Gilbert Brutus in elegant Perpignan as the Catalans Dragons demolished Lancashire giants St Helens. The 33-16 scoreline included a sensational try full of Gallic style as Lucas Albert - still only aged 17 - Fouad Yaha and Morgan Escare combined in such a way that the patrons of the sold out tribunes rose

as one to salute their rising young Treizistes.

Closer to home, our developing club saw no less than nine players called up for representative duty at both university and college levels. Take a bow guys we are very proud of you all.

It was a real pleasure to visit Hertfordshire last time out as the revamped All Golds secured a fine 18-48 triumph against a tough Hemel Stags outfit. Everyone played well but special mention must be made of our head coach Lee Greenwood and team manager Patrick Evans. The combination of Lee’s astute recruitment and Patrick’s hard work and commitment in ensuring all contracts and documentation were in order proved to be a recipe for success.

All involved with the club are working constantly to create an organisation to be proud of, one that is both successful in all aspects and built on proper foundations and values.

Finally, Monday June 20 will witness another entertaining All Golds Business Breakfast. Add in the attraction of a beautiful setting, tasty food and Wembley Cup Final tickets to be won and it is easy to see why many will be up bright and early to secure their seats!

ASSOCIATIONS CUP

Four All Golds played their part as England Universities regained the Associations Cup with a hard-earned victory in a

winner-take-all clash with GB Armed Forces at the Big Fellas Stadium in Featherstone.

Danny Fallon, James Mason, Brad Kislingbury and Zack McComb all starred in the 36-26 win after having

contributed to wins over GB Teachers and the Police in the four team tournament.

The students began the competition with a 32-16 win over GB Teachers that was only sealed by two late tries disguising the closeness of the contest. It was a much more dominant performance in the second game against the GB Police who were thrashed 58-4 in Wigan.

Kislingbury scored one of the students’ tries and was across the line twice in the final game against the Armed Forces as the students took the prize.

With both sides unbeaten, the trophy was on the line and the holders held the advantage after a compelling opening 40 minutes.

Fallon had opened the scoring for the students who trailed 16-12 at the interval. Four tries in the opening 13 minutes of the second half wrested control of the game away from the Services. The students had to withstand a late rally but they had done enough to take the title.

As a warm-up for the Student Four Nations Cup, the tournament was a massive success with players, several of whom had already played Championship or League 1 rugby, able to show their qualities.

STUDENTFOUR NATIONSThe Home Nations gathered in Edinburgh for their annual tournament at Student level. With three games scheduled in a hectic six-day period, the competition is a test of endurance as much as anything and usually boils down to a showdown between Wales and England on the final day.

England kept up their good form from the Associations Cup with a comfortable 52-4 win over Ireland. The Irish opened the scoring with an unconverted try but once England had gone ahead there was only one winner as they ran in ten unanswered tries.

McComb crossed twice, the second a fine solo effort, while

Kislingbury did the spadework with a fine break that ended with a try from London Skolars’ Sam Druce.

Next up was a Scotland side containing University of Gloucestershire student Jamie Parks. The Scots had been trounced 56-12 by a rampant Welsh side and were looking to bounce back.

They held England to 6-6 at the break in a game played in cold and wet conditions before England pulled away with four tries. Kislingbury was fully involved as England maintained their unbeaten record.

Scotland pulled a score back but England finished the job for a 40-10 scoreline that was harsh on Scotland but reflected England’s greater attacking ability.

Ireland pulled off the shock of the tournament as they recovered from their mauling by England to defeat Wales 42-20. Liam Rice-Wilson scored as Wales hit back from an 18-0 deficit but they trailed 28-20 at the break and Ireland’s defence held them out to seal a fine win.

England face Wales knowing a win would see them crowned champions while Ireland take on Scotland with their eyes on second place in the final

fixtures in the tournament to be played on Saturday 18 June.

COLLEGEORIGIN MATCHAll Gold Alex Davidson took time out from his Conference League South duties to coach the South side in the College Origin game at Coventry last weekend and he was joined by sports therapist Hollie Sims.

In the side were five players from the South West including four who have already featured in the CLS this season. Callum Merrett, Fraser Stroud, Jack Uren, Mitchell Dent and Sam Hodge had all earned their places after starring in the Regional College games that form part of the pathway to England Colleges selection.

Head coach James Massara, himself a University of Gloucestershire old boy and former Gloucestershire Warriors player, said before the game: “The match will be the final chance to impress the England Colleges coaches before the England squad is announced for this year’s games against Scotland U19s and Wales U19s.”

The game ended in a comfortable win for the North but there were good performances in defeat from Dent, Uren and Hodge putting them in with a shout of England selection.

ROUNDS 3 AND 4 IN REVIEWPortsmouth Seahawks have seen their lead at the top of Pool 1 eroded after they were held to a 30-30 draw by their nearest challengers Oxford Cavaliers and then were unable to travel to Gloucestershire Warriors, handing the Warriors their first win of the season.

The Cavaliers lost their chance to take over at the top as they went down 24-32 to Bristol Sonics who move up into second place in the table.

Defending champions Bath Romans have yet to get off the mark having lost both their fixtures so far.

There’s a similar scenario in Pool 2 with the lead changing hands over the last couple of weeks. Swindon’s win over leaders Cheltenham Phoenix, briefly put them top, though the

positions were reversed after Southampton Spitfires earned a 26-10 win over St George while the Phoenix defeated Forest Bulldogs 44-32.

The Bulldogs had earned a magnificent first win defeating Somerset Vikings 76-26 at Bream RFC but were brought down to earth by the Phoenix who left the Forest of Dean with the points.

ROUND 5 PREVIEWThe Gloucester-Bristol rivalry is renewed this weekend as the Warriors travel to the Sonics for a game that is always hard-fought.

The last time the sides met was in 2014 when both won their home fixture, the Warriors 70-50 at Saintbridge while the Sonics had their revenge 60-30 at Dings Crusaders. It would perhaps be surprising if so many points

are scored this season but both sides are capable of some strong attacking play.

Having lost their first game of the season at Oxford, the Warriors will be looking to earn their first win on the field after earning their first points through Portsmouth’s inability to raise a team to travel last week.

The Sonics’ incentive is not just to get one over on their rivals but to leapfrog Portsmouth, who have the bye, and go to the top of the table.

After fluffing their lines last weekend and failing to take advantage of Portsmouth’s travails the Oxford Cavaliers will be looking to take advantage of any slip up by the Sonics as they travel to Bath Romans who are aiming for their first win of season.

The champions are yet to win this season having lost to the Seahawks and to the Sonics by a combined

total of 12 points which would indicate that they are not that far away from the winner’s circle.

In Pool 2 Cheltenham Phoenix host winless Somerset Vikings looking to complete a league double, having won 38-14 in Bridgwater a few weeks ago.

The Forest Bulldogs make the long trip to the south coast to play Southampton for their first game away from home having started their debut season with a resounding 76-26 win over the Vikings. They followed that with a narrow loss to the Phoenix who returned to the top of the table

after Swindon St George were beaten 26-10 by Southampton.

The Saints had briefly claimed top spot with a big win over the Phoenix so it was something of a surprise that they lost at home to the Spitfires.

CLS ROUND10 REVIEWWRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON

The Valley Cougars’ lead at the top of the table was cut to a single point as London Chargers secured an 18-10 victory over the Welsh side in the capital.

The Chargers were never behind in a tight game and sealed the win with a try six minutes from time by Jonny Rowe, Phil Lyon adding his third goal of the day.

Brady Stewart and Timmy Dudley had crossed earlier

for London while Valley kept themselves in contention through touchdowns for Liam Watton and Jack Watkins, one of which Mike Hurley improved.

West Wales Raiders are fast becoming the division’s entertainers as they were involved in another high-scoring match this time with Torfaen Tigers. Late tries from Nathan Beck and Lee Evans, with Luke Williams adding the last two of his eight-goal haul saw them to a 52-38 win.

Earlier, Andrew Spowart and Curtis Ford grabbed

try doubles for the Raiders and Matthew Davies, Shane Edwards and Evans had also crossed.

The Tigers came up short despite tries from Dale Tucker (2), Liam Silver, Rhys Hendley, Kurtis Hale, Jarred Hinney and Tom Matthews, aided by five goals from Matt Cummins.

Reigning champions Nottingham Outlaws travelled to Gloucestershire in indifferent form but turned things around with an emphatic 36-0 win over the All Golds CLS side missing a dozen

29regulars through injury and international call-ups.

Wing Adrian Chaima crossed for a hat-trick of tries in the second half as the Outlaws built on a 16-0 interval advantage given them by Jack Pearson, Sam Campbell and Oli Dale. The All Golds battled hard with James Walter prominent in the pack but the Outlaws defence was solid. Jon Christie added the Outlaws’ seventh try in the final minute, Luca Costante booting his fourth goal.

ROUND 11 PREVIEWWRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON

The All Golds’ CLS side has a chance to make up for

defeat at the hands of the Outlaws and close the gap on the Nottingham side as they take on West Wales Raiders at the Prince of Wales Stadium this Sunday (5pm kick off).

The game follows the All Golds’ Kingstone Press League 1 encounter with North Wales Crusaders and could well be an extremely entertaining encounter as the Raiders are one of the most free-scoring sides in the CLS.

They are also well in the hunt for a top four place and a win could see them leapfrog both the All Golds and Coventry Bears into fourth place in the table.

All Golds coach Alex Davidson is likely to be without centre Brad Kislingbury who will have been in action for the England Students in the Four Nations Championship on Saturday against Wales for whom Liam Rice-Wilson was in the squad.
