Good afternoon and welcome to another great afternoon of rugby here at the Prince of Wales Stadium. I am really pleased to welcome the staff, players, directors and supporters of Coventry Bears for the first time in a formal fixture. They have visited us once before for a pre-season friendly but this is the first time that points are at stake so we hope they enjoy their trip to the Cotswolds but go home empty handed!

Coventry have certainly made a good start to their

life in the professional ranks. Our first few matches in our debut season were rather more fierce encounters so it’s good to see the Bears in competitive form and I’m sure today’s match will be close and exciting. We begin the entertainment today with

a curtain raiser between SGS College, coached by our own Dan Garbutt, and Moreton College, coached by Dan Poulton. A graduate of our University and a former rugby league scholar, Dan P is also on the books with Coventry and his is a fantastic success story for rugby league in the Midlands. We’re delighted to welcome him back today and hope that both of his teams do him proud. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster on the pitch for the All Golds in the past few weeks, so let’s hope the team can settle today and get back to winning ways Get behind Lee and the boys and I’m sure they will give you another good performance #COYAG

Welcome to everyone from Coventry Bears for today’s game. Although we played Coventry here in pre-season, this is the first professional, competitive fixture between the two sides. I watched Coventry last week at Keighley and the way that Tom Tsang and the players handled

themselves on such an emotional day was fantastic. The scoreline didn’t reflect the way Coventry played and I thought they competed well for long periods. We will certainly need to improve on our last performance if we are to get the 2 points today. I thought we were beaten in every department by York, and could have lost by more. We need to find consistency in our game quickly. It is no good putting a good shift in one week then not bothering the next. It was

very disappointing and not enjoyable to watch. York just ran harder and worked harder for each other than we did. Courtney Davies is the next player to join the injury list for us, he fractured his collar bone last week so will be facing a spell on the sidelines. The squad has got smaller over the last

month but we are working hard to bring players in that can improve us. Jamie Crowther and Jamie Murphy may be available for selection today which would be a boost for us. Lee GreenwoodCoach University of Gloucestershire All Golds

12 teams, from 8 different Gloucester primary schools, converged on the University of Gloucestershire’s Oxstalls Campus for an afternoon of Touch Rugby League.

The tournament marked the culmination of coaching as part of the RFL’s Sky Try initiative, undertaken by The University of Gloucestershire All Golds’ community department, and aimed at year 3 and 4 pupils from 14 Gloucester schools. The

team has received funding for an initial 2 year period, with the possibility of a 5 year extension, to focus on developing the sport at all levels including Primary Schools’ Rugby League as well as supporting secondary schools at key stage 3. Across the county around 45 schools will have some involvement this academic year with the aim of engaging even more over the coming years.

The competition saw teams grouped into 3 groups of 4 initially playing on a round robin basis before the sides were then graded into Cup, Shield and Plate competitions. In group One Robinswood’s A team, playing a quick brand of Touch Rugby League, proved too strong for Beech Green B, Churchdown Village A

and Innsworth Primary to go unbeaten and book a place in the cup competition. It was a similar story in group 2 as Beech Green’s A team swept all before them, overcoming Robinswood B, Churchdown Village B and Coopers Edge to score maximum points going into the play off fixtures. The most competitive league proved to be group 3 however as both Hempsted and Waterwells battled it out to both book a place in the Cup semi final with Upton St Leonards and Churchdown Village C entering the Shield and Plate respectively.

In the Plate semi finals, Churchdown Village A overcame Coopers Edge four tries to nil and then beat Beech Green B, who had beaten Churchdown’s C team to get to the final. The Shield

competition was won by Innsworth school, who had steadily performed better and better throughout the day, beating Robinswood B with Upton St Leonards and Churchdown Village B having been defeated in the semi finals. The cup competition proved to be dramatic from start to finish with Robinswood A squeezing past their Beech Green counterparts in a ding dong battle to book a place in the final. The other semi-final proved to be an epic with Hempsted seemingly beaten by a strong Waterwells team until a last second try took the game to sudden death extra time at 2-2. Despite playing 5 minutes of extra time, defences were on top and the sides couldn’t be

separated so Waterwells went through by virtue of having beaten Hempsted in the group stages. The final proved a game too far for a tiring Waterwells team as a superbly coached Robinswood took the tournament in a tight game.

Speaking after the event Dan Garbutt, Head of Community at the All Golds, highlighted what a great event it had been and was quick to praise his coaches in saying

“Today was a fantastic event and the standard of play, for a group of young players was exceptional. Our department have been out and about in schools now for 5 weeks and it’s a credit to them that all the schools represented

today have left happy not only with the event but also with the whole programme. We have 9 community coaches in the department, most of whom are currently combining coaching alongside their studies at the University of Gloucestershire, and they have been nothing short of superb in their efforts and approach to the programme so far.”

The community department’s next event is the 1908 Cup and Golden Fern Cup, a secondary schools competition for Boys and Girls on 21 May, and following that the Cheltenham Primary Schools competition which takes place on 6 June.

With two teams meeting at the Prince of Wales stadium this afternoon in some bad form, something has to give in Cheltenham.

Last week’s loss to York City Knights in such a fashion was gut wrentching for everyone involved with the All Golds. Having done so well at league-leaders Oldham the week before, last week’s encounter was nothing short of

dissapointing. Forty points is a huge margin to lose by, and Lee Greenwood’s side have had seven days to recover and re-group ahead of today’s encounter. Coventry are also in some bad form, having lost their last three. There were touching scenes at their last game, as it was Keighley Cougars’ first game after the loss of player Danny Jones. Thousands turned out to mark their respects and it was rather fitting for the home side to triumph. For the Bears however, they will want to put it behind them, having not won since there

big win over Hemel Stags. Today’s game is the first of three games against sides in the bottom half, primarily southern sides where the All Golds will seek to take maximum points. Coventry move on after today and have tough tests against Barrow and Swinton with London Skolars in the middle, so with this in mind they will look to propel themselves into the fixtures with a win this afternoon.

It’s been an exciting week once again in the Kingstone Press League One, with some big scores and action packed games.

Unbeaten Oldham finally had their run come to an end as they travelled to Barrow. Having nearly lost to the All Golds on home turf a week previous, the Roughyeds perhaps could have seen it coming, and Barrow would be the ones to finally end the streak.

Oldham’s rivals Rochdale did win however, by 28-16 over Swinton Lions which was a huge victory at Spotland, where there promotion bid is still in full swing. The final of a trio of games on the Saturday came here at the Prince of Wales Stadium, the All Golds would taste their third defeat on the trot, as York City Knights waltzed through Cheltenham and took home maximum points with a 6-46 win.

On the Sunday there were victories for Keighley against Coventry in their

first game since the tragic passing of Danny Jones in front of a large crowd.

Oxford would manage a solid win over London Skolars in a high scoring encounter.

It was the first Welsh derby of the season as South Wales met North Wales, and the away side would win by a landslide and take the points back up to the Racecourse Ground.

There was also a win for Newcastle Thunder away at Hemel Hempstead.

The RLEF held its second Board Meeting of the year on Monday, attended by Rugby League International Federation

chairman Nigel Wood and, for the first time, newly appointed RLIF CEO David Collier, OBE.

The Directors discussed a series of topics including the 2014 membership audit,

the 2017 Rugby League World Cup qualifiers and various governance items.

“The RLEF Directors were delighted to welcome David Collier to attend our Board Meeting,” said RLEF chairman Maurice Watkins. “He, alongside Nigel Wood, contributed fully to the high number of important topics we are involved with, notably the RLIF application to join SportAccord and recent

events in the UAE. The Board also received an update on the progress being made by the Serbian Rugby League Federation, surrounding the organisation of July’s Congress in Belgrade and I look forward to greeting our member delegations there on 4 July.”

Concerning UAE, Sol Mokdad, president of the Rugby League Commission in the UAE, which is an Observer of the RLEF,

was imprisoned last Wednesday following a charge filed by the Emirati rugby union federation. The RLIF appointed legal representation and is corresponding with the authorities in the UAE.

David Collier said: “Having recently attended the Asia Pacific meeting, I was very pleased to attend the RLEF Board Meeting. The Northern Hemisphere has seen a rapid increase in the number of countries taking

up rugby league over the last few years and as we shape the future of the RLIF it was very helpful to discuss the issues facing the federation’s diverse membership.

“We were able to debate important issues including the future schedule and governance in both a regional and international context which provided valuable input into the future priorities for RLIF.”

Bradley, who is an Italian international and well-known for his kicking game, joined the All Golds in 2011 on a rugby league scholarship.

At the time he was studying a BA Hons Degree in Business Management and went on to represent the All Golds in their inaugural year.

He signed with the London Skolars at the beginning of the 2014 campaign but returned to the Gloucestershire during the season.

Commenting on putting pen to paper, Matt Bradley said: “I am really happy to have re-signed with the University of Gloucestershire All Golds for 2015. The club has great ambitions for the future and that has always impressed me. It is a great environment to develop as a player but also as a coach and I am looking forward to the new challenges ahead of me. My aspirations for

2015 are to make the play-offs as I was disappointed by how close we got this season.”

WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOVE ABOUT RUGBY LEAGUE?

Intensity of the sport, you have to give 100% from the first minute. It is the perfect combination of power and a high skill level.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST START TO PLAY THE SPORT?

I have played both codes from the age of 16. I had a late start to the game due

to playing football at Bury Football Club.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS?

Making the change from a university squad to the professional game. There are still a few lads around the squad that have been with the All Golds since day 1. Also representing Italy was a highlight.

WHO IS YOUR RUGBY LEAGUE HERO AND WHY?

As a kid I watched a lot of Warrington and Salford matches. Allan Langer was one of the first players I can remember. Alongside Luke Robinson when he was at Salford.

WHAT ARE YOUR ASPIRATIONS FOR THE ALL GOLDS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON?

As Richard Jones would say, I want to keep progressing and achieve more than last year. A club goal is to push for the play-offs. We have the best environment at the club that we have ever had.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER SPORTS/HOBBIES YOU ENJOY OUTSIDE OF RUGBY LEAGUE?

I still follow football a lot. In the off season I like to get back on the footy pitch and have a kick around.

My Grandad – I think he would love the fact that I am playing RL as it was his type of game.

Eric Cantona – he would add a bit of class to any event and is a United legend!

  • P22 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS

In mid-January the Gloucestershire Warriors announced they had appointed 23-year old Richard Jones as their new head coach.

Warriors’ media manager Chris Wilson sat down with Jones over the Bank Holiday to see how he was taking to life on the other side of the touchline.

Jones was the All Golds’ first major signing when he joined the club as a player from Keighley Cougars in November 2012 but, in 2014, he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the opening minutes of the game at Oldham just

six matches into his return from a break to complete his studies.

The back rower had done some coaching before but had never really considered a head coach role until he was approached by the Warriors. It seemed a good fit for the newly promoted Conference League South side as Jones readily agrees: “It made a lot of sense having a former All Gold coaching the Warriors as they are the new feeder team for the club. And with them getting promoted last year it was a new challenge for me to take on.”

So, how different has he found coaching from playing? “I would say it’s completely different, coaching rather than

playing; although I still get the same ‘buzz’ I used to get from playing, especially when we earn the win. The hardest factor for me is not taking to the pitch; I am starting to jump in, in training sessions now and again to show the lads how it’s done - however they may tell you different,” he laughs. “They have sure helped in dusting the cobwebs off my lungs!”

As you read this, the Warriors will be taking on Oxford Cavaliers looking to secure a league double over their old rivals and reignite their play off ambitions. “When I first took the role at the Warriors there was no questioning the ambitions and targets for the 2015 season,” Jones said, adding “I will not settle for anything

KEEPING UP WITH JONESYArticle written by Chris Wilson

  • P23twitter: @AllGolds | facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby

less than a play-off spot. Obviously, with it being the first season in CLS it is a tall order but we have the players to achieve this.”

Jones goes on to drop a couple of names in hooker Luke Stephens and second row Connor Jones who could be swapping the Warriors’ red and black for the Blue and Blue of the All Golds in the very near future. “They have both put in some great performances this season already. Connor in particular has already been involved in the All Golds training sessions and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a first team appearance at some stage this year”.

Players like Luke and Connor have benefitted from the partnership between the All Golds and the Warriors and Jones is quick to point out the advantages of the relationship. “Without giving too much away, we play a very similar game to the All Golds. That means it is a lot easier for the Warriors to pick things up if pushed up to the first team and vice-versa”.

Jones continues: “I would say the partnership is going well at the moment. Lee [Greenwood, All Golds head coach] is giving me as many players as he can who are not selected in the firsts. I don’t think he will mind me saying that he would like a lot more depth in the All Golds which therefore would provide the Warriors with more players. I think it’s a matter of getting the balance of All Golds

and Warriors lads who are serious about their rugby league,” he said.

“I have had a big input in getting the lads training twice a week this year which some are still getting used to, but if we are to progress as a feeder club and become a strong partner of the All Golds we have to be as professional and committed to the game as them.”

Jones will have a big commitment of his own at the end of the season when he marries his fiancée, Amy, back in Yorkshire. The plans are going smoothly although Jones jokes, “you best ask my other half about them. All I know is my bank balance isn’t looking very healthy at the moment!”

“The plans are looking great; I just can’t believe how quick it has gone since we first booked it. Hopefully the weather will be on our side and we should have a great day. I can’t say I’m particularly looking forward to the stag do, I can’t imagine what the rugby lads will have in store for me!”

One question remains is whether we will see Jones back on the field of play this season. “My target for this year is to catch a few games towards the back end of the season. I’d like to play alongside the Warriors before heading back to a semi-professional career,” he says before going on to reveal there are other considerations to take into account. “It might be worth giving the All Golds

a miss this year as if they get into the play-offs, the first game is the day after my wedding… I don’t think Amy will be too impressed if I have to shoot off the morning after the big day! It would likely be a very short marriage!”

The marriage between the Warriors and their coach could be a short one, however, as Jones still has ambitions on the field. “I don’t have massive ambitions in coaching as yet, as I am adamant that I will be playing competitive rugby in the future,” he says. “When that ship has sailed and I am past playing, achieving all I wish, I will most probably turn to coaching after that.”

The experience gained with the Warriors in 2015 will no doubt help Jones fulfil his ambitions to the full both on and off the field.

YORK PROVED FAR TOO GOOD FOR THE ALL GOLDS WHO FELL TO A HEAVY HOME DEFEAT FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS SEASON.

Confidence was high among the home support after being narrowly denied at Oldham last week but York ran riot in a one sided affair.

It was York who started the stronger, scoring the first try after 2 minutes. They

broke the line with ease and it was former All Gold Pat Smith who waltzed through unchallenged with Ben Dent adding the conversion.

On 12 minutes the visitors scored again, albeit after an obvious forward pass wasn’t picked up in the build-up. That didn’t concern Tyler Craig though who went over in the corner. Dent missed his conversion as York ruthlessly punished some poor All Golds defence.

The home side got themselves back into it at the end of the first quarter,

a reward for much more threatening play. 5 yards short of the whitewash they played a grubber kick and it was Chris Vitalini who went over to bring the All Golds to within 4 points of York.

But that was as good as it got for the Golden Fern as York scythed through the massive holes in the home sides defence. York grabbed their third try just after the half hour mark. Tyler Craig was a constant threat all game long and the right winger showed a smart turn of foot as he beat 4 men. His team mates caught him up and Josh

Tonks had the easy task of touching down. Dent took care of the extras to put the hosts 16-6 ahead.

Two minutes later they scored again and it was all too easy as the home side struggled to defend their line against the York onslaught. Tonks turned provider this time, the second rower passed to full back Dent who coasted home unchallenged. Dent converted his own try as York pulled further clear.

The second half started in similar fashion – more York tries and even more missed tackles from the home side. On 45 minutes Pat Smith scored his second of the game. Jonny Presley broke the line and fed Smith who jogged home between the posts. Dent couldn’t miss from close range and York stretched further clear.

Brad England then made a string of big hits to try and repel the rampant York side but they proved in vain as York ran in another and it was Tonks again who was chief architect. He broke through and accelerated smartly to touch down in the corner. Dent, enjoying a fine day with the boot, struck a perfect conversion to take the hosts 28 points clear.

Nev Morrison was the next York man to get his name on the score sheet. He showed incredible pace to score a try all of his own making. From the moment he received the ball he never looked like being caught and touched down to heap further misery on the home side. Dent made no mistake as York pulled 40-6 clear.

The home sides punishment was complete on 73 minutes when the superb Dent fed right centre Greg Minikin who, like so many of his team mates before him, had the luxury of running through unchallenged.

With two minutes to go Brett Scriven received a red card after lashing out off the ball. A disappointing end to a forgettable afternoon for the home side who will need a much better performance next Saturday against Coventry.
