Dear Student Leader,

Students have been at the foundation of many major social and political movements in history. From the US protest against the Vietnam War to the student-lead pro-democracy movement in Tiananmen Square, students have continuously shaped the world around them through their influence in a diverse range of political and social spheres. Students are instrumental in today’s current issues and campaigns, such as Save Darfur and Invis-ible Children. The All Girls Allowed campaign for the end of the One-Child Policy is no exception. You are All Girls Allowed, and you have a fundamental role to play in the movement to end the systematic elimination of girls in China.

As a college student, you have a unique opportunity to strengthen our efforts. Whether it’s by starting your own All Girls Allowed group on your campus or mobilizing groups you are already part of, you can rally others to support the restoration of life, value and dignity for women and girls in China, leading to a day when all girls are allowed. Use your unique avenue and environment to extend All Girls Allowed’s cause by educating your peers about the One-Child Policy by spreading awareness through events, meetings, and fundraisers.

Much like you, I channelled my passion for social justice as a student-leader in college. I started with smaller efforts, such as providing food and water for fellow pro-democracy student demonstrators in China. I eventually became more committed to leading and was named commander-in-chief of the Tiananmen Square movement. You too could be part of a movement that will change history, no matter how small or large your contribution. Every action to stop the One-Child Policy is valuable and a step in the right direction.

Join All Girls Allowed today and become the generation that will end gendercide!

Respectfully,

Chai Ling

Founder of All Girls Allowed & Former Student Leader

Kat at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama began a chapter by taking the launch challenge. Through tabling, her group managed to collect over 200 signatures on the petition. They also held a movie screening of a documentary on Chi-na, promoted their event to the local community, made t-shirts for their group to wear, baked to provide refreshments and welcomed guests with live music. Their hard work paid off when over 40 people attended the event and they were able to

collect a substantial donation to All Girls Allowed’s programs in China.

Kat said, “At the end of our week of tabling about All Girls Allowed on campus, I’ve never felt more proud of myself and my peers. We raised an impressive amount of money and raised so much more awareness about the human rights violations that are going on right under our noses. For me, this cause is more than just signing peti-tions and sending off letters to the right people, this cause is the story of my Chinese sisters who are hurting and in need.”

Complete at least one of the following activities:

Organize a fundraiser or collection on campus to raise enough funds to pay for a baby shower gift for one girl for a year ($240).

Make checks payable to All Girls Allowed and send to 101 Huntington Ave, Suite 2205 Boston, MA 02199. Please include your school and contact information.

Work with a campus faith group or local congregation to incorporate All Girls Allowed into a service, small group, or

religious event. We have a 37 seconds kit for churches if you would like to use this.

Post the event on your Facebook page and update with pictures.

Get the One-Child Policy and All Girls Allowed’s work covered by your school paper or radio station. Wording/coverage must be

approved by All Girls Allowed before you go to print/air.

Post a link to the news piece on your Facebook page and send a hard copy to All Girls Allowed.

Hold a movie screening on campus of a relevant documentary that shows the reality of the situation in China

Aim to get at least 20 people to attend who are new contacts for your group.

Print out this Student Kitand arrange it in a 3-ring binder. To help you get organized, here are

some tab ideas

Get your chapter approved by your school

Check out your campus’ website to find out how to start a new stu-dent organization. Review the policies about starting a student-group or contact the director about applying. Some schools may not require this, but if they do, it usually entails a brief application or statement of interest. Some schools will give your chapter money if you apply for funding or at least give you a printing allowance so you can print fli-ers & promotional materials. Many campuses also allow you to reserve classrooms or halls for club meetings once you are a recognized stu-dent organization.

Find a faculty sponsor

This is a professor or administrator interested in the All Girls Allowed cause. A faculty advisor may or may not be required at your school, but either way, faculty support can go a long way. Find a professor who knows you well whom you think would be interested in the cause. If you don’t know any professors well, look into contacting profes-sors related to East Asian studies, women’s issues, political science or international studies. One of the biggest challenges with starting a new group is getting people to commit. This can take time but don’t let that discourage you. A lot can be achieved by just 3 or 4 committed people, and your en-thusiasm will be contagious so more people are sure to follow. Here are some ideas to help you build momentum.

Start with your circle

Talk to your friends about All Girls Allowed and start to build your base. Get people talking!

Reach out to a variety of students

Target both upperclassmen and underclassmen, especially freshmen! When school begins, freshmen are always looking for interesting clubs and activities to join. By drawing from many different classes, you can ensure sustainable leadership from younger members who can carry on the group’s legacy.

Be sure to get the contact information for interested members

Follow up with them by phone or email. Sometimes people need to be asked 2 or 3 times before they will think about doing something. Being persistent can really pay off!

Use social media it has the potential to reach many more people than you could possi-

bly speak to in person

Invite all your friends to join your chapter facebook page, update it regularly and Tweet about your All Girls Allowed chapter!

Request a table at your campus’ club/activity fairat the beginning of each semester

Submit an All Girls Allowed chapter advertisement to your school newspaper, magazine, radio station, or TV station

These are often free! If your school newspaper doesn’t accept adver-tisements, contact the editor-in-chief about doing an article about the One-Child Policy or All Girls Allowed.

Events are a great way to raise awareness, have a great time, raise money and build your constituency. Here are some additional event

ideas!

To find a band, talk to your members! Ask if anyone has connec-tions to a band or owns/works at a music venue or club. Talk to other organizations on campus that have experience in booking bands—try student activities leaders, Greek organizations, mu-sic clubs, etc.

Talk to the dean or director of campus activities about booking a hall or auditorium. This is usually pretty easy and entails filling out a form or two about the nature of the event. If you want to go off-campus, ask a venue if they will donate their space for the night.

Advertise the event. Ensure that the time, date, ticket price are on all fliers and advertising materials. Get advertisements in the student publications on campus!

Create sales & publicity teams of members who can sell tickets, put up fliers, collect tickets at the door, set up/clean up, etc.

Organize a raffle and secure a door prize. You can ask local businesses to donate a gift card, Wii, iPod, or something fun that would prompt students to buy a $1 raffle ticket!

Talk to your school’s dean or student organizations director about hosting a run around campus. If you don’t have space on campus, contact the town hall about reserving a course for the run.

Suggest an entry-fee that you think most college students will be able to afford & include it on your event fliers.

Advertise the run both on & off campus. There are probably many people in your off-campus community that want to partici-pate! Make sure your ad includes the information to the left.

Talk to local businesses about donating gift-cards or prizes that can serve as race prizes!

Organize volunteers to set up the course, collect entry-fees, work water stations & help with registration.

T-shirts are always a good idea. The price of the shirts can be included in the price of entry. Be sure to wear your shirts the week of the run to spread the word!

Every penny donated to All Girls Allowed goes straight to China to restore life, value and dignity to girls and mothers, so no amount is too small. Donations should be encouraged at every All Girls Allowed event, even if fundraising is not the primary focus.

Set a fundraising goal for the year, as well as what you hope to get at each event. To help you decide, here are some suggestions

We have two main paths for donations, though you can be as creative as you’d like! 1. Online via our website (www.allgirlsallowed.org/donate)

2. Print out the All Girls Allowed milk carton and use it during your event to collect donations. Remember, all checks should be made out to All Girls Allowed and every cent counts, so encourage your attend-ees to part with that spare change, too!

After your event, gather up your donations and send them to us here at All Girls Allowed, being sure to send a note describing your event and any contact details you collected from your attendees.

It is important to plan your strategy for how you will hand over the leadership of your group. Don’t just assume that someone will take it over when you leave! Here are some ways to ensure that your hard work is not wasted after you graduate:

Recruit members from across all classes so that each year is well represented

Look for those in your group who are most involved and commit-ted who could be future leaders, and also those who look like they

have time

Some people will care a lot about the cause, but if they have a lot of other commitments, they may not feel that they can take on a leader-ship role.

Bring future leaders behind the scenes

Invite them to attend committee meetings, phone conferences with All Girls Allowed HQ, and delegate some of your tasks to them so they can see what’s involved.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket

Cultivate a few potential leaders. People will feel more encouraged if they have a few others to lead with- you will need a President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer every year so you should be looking for people who can fill different roles.

Students at Charleston Southern University have set up an All Girls Allowed Chapter which is now officially recognized as a campus organization by their Student Government Association. They started their movement on campus by showing All Girls Allowed’s “37 seconds” video at various events and services on campus. They are now planning an All Girls Allowed week including a day where they screen a documentary, a day of tabling, and a day for promoting the Baby Shower Gift program, wrapping up the week

with a fundraiser.

Other All Girls Allowed groups are planning book clubs, fun runs, art shows and t-shirt campaigns. The options are endless!

Deny U.S. Entry to Enforcers of China’s One-Child Policy

Support the China Democracy Promotion Act of 2011 (H.R.2121)

Dear President Obama, Secretary Clinton and Members of Congress,

I am writing to ask you to take active measures to bring an end to China’s One-Child Policy. Over thirty years ago, China began implementing its current family planning policy (also known as the One-Child Policy), under which most Chinese couples are only allowed to have one child. The result has been devastating, leading to violations of reproductive rights, infant abandonment and child traf-ficking. Enforcement of the policy has been ruthless and unforgiving, and many women and children have lost their lives—all for the crime of wanting a child. As a free American, I am outraged at these injustices and saddened that more attention has not been given to them.

In addition to being an issue of fundamental human rights, the One-Child Policy has been directly linked with the gendercide of girls—the systematic elimination of girls—which is leading to a growing gender imbalance. In 2007, the Chinese government reported that there were 37 million more men than women in China. Each year, the gap widens. This growing gender imbalance has already led to a near doubling of China’s crime rate over the last two decades; historically, countries with excess men have had increased social unrest and more aggressive foreign policies. Additionally, excess men significantly disrupt spending patterns and are one of the main drivers of our trade deficit with China.

There is no evidence that enforcement of the One-Child Policy is abating. To the contrary, on the 30th Anniversary of the policy on September 25th, 2010, the leader of the National Population and Family Planning Commission announced that China “will stick to the family-planning policy in the coming decades.” Other countries have begun to implement similar family planning policies in re-cent years, and so it has become all the more imperative that we act now.

Since its founding, the United States has been a champion of freedom throughout the world. I ap-plaud you for the ways in which you have built on that legacy, and ask that you would continue to call for freedom around the world. In light of the above, I strongly urge you to:

Vote for and sign into law the “China Democracy Promotion Act of 2011” (H.R 2121), which would give the President authority to deny entry into the U.S. of Chinese officials and individu-als who participate in human rights abuses, including China’s coercive birth limitation policy.

I call on you as my representatives in government to do all that is in your power to bring an end to China’s inhumane policy. The “China Democracy Promotion Act of 2011” is the right step forward, doing what is within our power to call China to account. By voting for and signing the bill, you will begin to restore to Chinese girls and mothers the life, value and dignity that all American girls and mothers enjoy. Thank you very much for your attention. Sincerely,
